Simple question have we improved since 2008?

At the end of 2008, things were looking pretty promising with nothing but upside, now in late 2010 with essentially a full list we seem to now be playing worse, or at best slightly better.

Hard to believe with Judd now flying fit, Gibbs and Murphy 2 years older, handy kids who have show plenty in Yarran, and Garlett, Betts has improved, Jamo has had a near full season, new facilities, loads of cash , and yet our last month has been more like 2007.

Discuss,

Having played finals and beaten some top teams we've improved, but there's signs of late that throw me back to 2008 and before

The opposition running the ball out of the stoppages with ease, the ball flooding into our backline giving our backs limited opportunity, and our forward line constantly congested

Bigger question is why?

Discuss,

Does the loss of our leading goalkicker of the last 7 seasons not set you back somewhat? Particularly when the replacements are an Irishman & a 20 year old KP player.

Was there not some expectation that we may not continue to progress at the same rate & perhaps even go slightly backwards due to the trading of Fevola? Carlos was very good early in the season, but the opposition were soon going to work him out due to the lack of strings to his bow. You don't just replace a Fevola overnight, just as Essendon have found out with the forced retirement of Lloyd.

You said it gunslinger , we tossed out a Coleman medallist for nowhere near as good replacements.Henderson may come good ( & I hope he does ) but tossing out a proven goalkicking full forward for a couple of
" promising " players was nothing but a bad joke - if not sabotage !
Sticks was so keen to get rid of Fev that i think he would have accepted half a dozen stale Dim Sims as a trade.

We need Fev and Fev needs us ?

Fev had to go. He was given a final warning in 2008 for the 'pissing on the window' incident & his behaviour at last year's Brownlow Medal function left the club with no choice but to let him go (his all-nighter after the Hawthorn game & alleged poor behaviour prior to the Freo game at Carrara didn't help matters). If they had given him another chance, it would have given Fev the message that he was bigger than the club.

It is a shame it came to that, as we were better with him, and he was better with us.

we did not toss out a Coleman medalist we got rid of a problem child who thought he was bigger than the club. It should have happened earlier in his career and we would be further on in our rebuild
Don't blame losing Fev on anybody but Fev

For what being a little drunk & merry at a gathering in which everyone was drinking alcohol , I'm sure there were others just as merry as Fev but weren't getting paid a bonus by The Crappy Show to act out a little more.
He didn't break the law or offend anyone , the police were never called so his actions should not have been deemed as bringing the club into disrepute.I don't think the ultimatum giving him after his earlier escapade was that you " cannot drink in a public place where other are drinking & you sure as hell cannot enjoy yourself " type thing.
Its noy like he was out at all hours of the morning with a convicted drug dealer & being in his prescence while he took pot shots at apolice station with a .45 Colt, nor was he out buying/selling Cocaine like some others that i notice are not only still allowed to play football ( amazing but true !) they are still with the same club

It's rather ironic that the arrival of Fevola coincided with the inception of the 'Paddle Pop Lion' guernsey. Both represent a self-centered, self-promoting, childish nature and a complete and utter lack of respect, as well as preparedness to piss on the history of some of the proudest clubs in the league.

It's a shame we ever gave that prick a shot at the big time, as all he did with it was sully the name of our great club.

As for the OP - Fevola and Stevens give us the two things we are desperately lacking at the moment by way of forward structure and precision disposal. This has been our biggest hurdle in the past month, and the strain is really starting to show.

We played the second youngest 22 this weekend, and got smacked by one of the more experienced ones. The hardest thing about these losses is that we are losing to teams like the Roos and Swans who make up for a lack of precision and finesse by being hard at the contest. We were at times today - but by and large, were insipid for the majority. Spineless.

It is probably better that the form slump has come now rather than earlier in the season, as a start such as this would've absolutely shaken our confidence.

We're probably less advanced as at the same time in 2008, as Stevens and Fevola were in great form throughout that year. But I'd dare say we're ahead in terms of our position on the ladder.

If we lose to the WC this week I am confident we have infact gone backwards.

Why wasn't this thread started after we played Geelong and St Kilda?

It is incredibly simplistic to say that we have not improved.

We have come on in leaps and bounds but we are in a bad form slump at the moment.

Things change and just as quickly as we've gone from playing well to playing terribly, we could see the reverse of that.

Stupid reactionary thread.

Losing that Fev bloke (and Stevens) certainly hasnt helped.

On the other hand, I expect more of Gibbs and Murphy by now.

Given the recent gutting of our forward line, I would put us about where I expected us at the start of the year.
