Look up a pic of steve moneghetti, then look up a pic of Usain Bolt.

Then look up a pic of a staying horse, then look at a sprinter.

People or animals etc, bigger muscles and build is more suited to more explosive things like sprinting, stayers or distance runners etc are smaller generally..

Its not that hard to understand.

Good.
I'll just nip off now and tell Diesel, Ablett, Jason Johnson they didn't actually have careers because they had big legs then.

I'm glad goldenboy can make such assessments off a brief glance at a photo when the guys aren't even in match nick.

God knows physical strength & explosive have no place in the game.

It isn't as simple as "big legs mean fast" or "small legs mean fast".
Comparing a marathon runner to a sprinter isn't an appropriate comparison as they have built their bodies to specifically excell in their field. Marathon runners weigh nothing (with small legs) to reduce the amount of weight they have to carry around. Sprinters have bigger legs to produce maximum power at as quick a rate possible.
But speed comes more down to genetics when you get to an elite level. I won't go too in depth, but there are two main muscle types that are important in regards to speed. Slow twich muscle is more desirable for endurance, fast twitch is more desirable for quick bursts. So those that are quicker off the mark would have a high ratio of fast to slow twitch. All to do with the way that the muscle produces energy. But those with big legs (more muscle) would have more capabilty of producing more power.
So I would assume that those with big legs in the afl would be more powerful (ablett, Judd) and able to 'burst' effectively. But smaller blokes rely on their natural genetic speed to be able to accelerate. Less muscle weight to move, but less muscle power produced. So they. Would struggle to break a tackle, but would be quite quick off the mark.

A very complex topic that cannot be generalized by any 10 word statement.
Poorly explained by me, but I'm on my phone, so appologies.
