Re: spud_jjj's Round 17 Preview, Scores & In-Game Discussion

2000 even...with sixteen players scoring below their average (most of those being significantly below). Dropped out of the top 15,000. Somehow won my league match, because, although I had Montagna (why didn't I spend the extra 60-odd k for Swan), my opponent had him as captain.

Hating SC at the moment...

Re: spud_jjj's Round 17 Preview, Scores & In-Game Discussion

2113

Some very disappointing scorers - Gilbert, Montagna, Sandilands. But saved by a massive 350 from captain Selwood!

1. Dane Swan - 190

D: 37 (Contested: 16), K: 21, HB: 16, DE: 64.86%, i50: 6, M: 4, T: 4 & Score: 1.2

What more can we say about this guy? Hasn't pumped out a sub-100 score since Round 5 and since then, has averaged 147 points per game. The 2162 points he's already scored this year are made up of ten instances of 120+ and only one sub-90 game. Since the start of 2007, Swannie averages 113 points everytime he steps out in the black and white. Here are some other impressive stats:

#1 for disposals (545)
=#1 for uncontested disposals (357)
#9 for contested disposals (173)
#1 for kicks (318)
#4 for inside 50s (86)
Has a better effective disposal percentage (72.66%) than Hodge, Montagna, Cooney, Hayes, Bartel, Boyd & Dal Santo

Forget Goddard, Hodge, Chapman or Sandilands, the #36 for Collingwood has sewn up the 2010 SuperCoach MVP for mine :thumbsu:

2. Joel Selwood - 175

D: 41 (CP: 7), K: 17, HB: 24, DE: 85.37%, M: 9, T: 10, i50: 7, Goal Assists: 3 & 1%ers: 3

Along with Swan, the in form midfielder of the competition, who would have guaranteed a midfield spot in the AA side. Over the last six weeks, Ablett's loss has been Selwood's gain; in the last six weeks, the pair have averaged 109 and 134 respectively. You would think either he or Chappy would be leading the Carji Greeves medal down at the Cattery, where he came 4th last year.

3. Andrew Swallow - 156

D: 27 (CP: 13), K: 17, HB: 10, DE: 66.67%, T: 15, M: 3, Centre Clearances: 8, i50: 7 & 1%ers: 5

Back-to-back scores of 150s for Spits, who currently leads the AFL for tackles this year (138) and sits 15th for contested possessions (159). Of his 16 matches this year, the reigning Syd Barker medalist has registered ten scores of 100+, and only four sub-90 games.

Equal 4. Brent Macaffer - 150

D: 18 (CP: 7), K: 11, HB: 7, DE: 88.89%, M: 6 & Score: 3.0

He, along with Swan and Didak, tore us apart on Saturday. One of many 'good' Collingwood players who I believe wouldn't be as good at another club. Averaging 71.92 for the season.

AS_ChaplinNAB10_news.jpg

Equal 4. Troy Chaplin - 150

D: D: 26 (CP: 6), K: 18, HB: 8, DE: 88.46%, M: 11, r50: 7 & 1%: 4

Surprisingly averages 91.47 for 2010, with only six scores over 100. Began the year well, averaging 104 across the first five rounds, but since then has struggled averaging 85 points per game. Over the past three weeks however, he has accumulated scores of 88, 113 & 150 (ave 117).

6. Luke Hodge (149) - D: 33 (CP: 19), K: 16, HB: 17, DE: 72.73% & Centre Clearances: 7
7. Dom Cassisi (146) - D: 28 (CP: 16), K: 14, HB: 14, DE: 71.43%, T: 12, M: 4 & Centre Clearances: 5
8. Darren Milburn (145) - D: 35 (CP: 10), K: 15, HB: 20, DE: 85.71%, M: 4 & 1%ers: 11
9. Gary Ablett (144) - D: 26 (CP: 10), K: 16, HB: 10, DE: 80.77%, M: 7 & i50: 4
Eq 10. Alan Didak (141) - D: 28 (CP: 7), K: 15, HB: 13, DE: 85.71%, M: 8, CL: 3 & Score: 3.0
Eq 10. Adam Goodes (141) - D: 26 (CP: 12), K: 16, HB: 10, DE: 61.54%, M: 7, i50: 5, Score: 4.2

Captain's Corner Review

After much thought (and some criticism), from this point on, I will be taking much more notice of the current form of players, rather than just previous form against particular opponents, when nominating my captain selections in each weekly preview. Swan (190), Selwood (156), Swallow & Hodge (149) were/are in red-hot form, yet none of those four featured in my Round 17 Preview as their records against their respectve opposition wasn't as impressive as the names I did mention (see below). So yeah, I'll be looking to combine current and previous form with each Captain's corner from here on in.

Anyway, on to this week. I ended up going with Swan (c) and Murphy (vc), but here's my list from last week. Some decent scores, and no one went terribly, except for NDS & Bartel:

1. Dal Santo - 77
2. Judd - 110
3. Boomer - 98
4. Ablett - 144
5. Murphy - 129
6. Bartel - 75
7. Hayes - 125
8. Chapman - 91
9. Gibs - 95
10. Pavlich - 99

Biggest Disappointments (Top 20)

The numerical figure represents the difference between the player's average up to Round 16, and their score for Round 17:

CAPTAIN'S CORNER

Okay, after a bit of thought and some feedback from fellow BF posters, I've decided to adjust the way I go about nominating my Captain choices from here on in. Instead of looking just at a player's form against his weekly opposition, I'll also pay closer attention to a player's current form; with that in mind, let's see who's in with a show for Round 18:

Top 6

brendon-goddard-roars-246c.jpg

1. Brendan Goddard
Average vs Essendon since start of 2008: 122
Average over the last five rounds (2010): 119
Average at Etihad (2010): 139

Loves playing the Bombers, loves playing at Etihad and although he's put up two of his three sub-100 scores in the past fortnight, BJ still averages a tick under 120 SuperCoach points over his past five matches. Playing against a side in Essendon, who only just got over the line against 21-and-a-half players last week, you get the feeling Goddard could go BIG! Scored 147 against the Dons earlier in the year.

0,5001,6712857,00.jpg

2. Dane Swan
Average vs Carlton since start of 2008: 110
Average over the last five rounds: 145
Average at venue 2010 scores: 128

Coming off a massive score against the Tigers last week (190), and as I said in the Round 17 Review, I reckon he's sewn up the SuperCoach MVP. Holds the #1 ranking in terms of most SC points scored (a position that he should hold til year's end), most disposals and most kicks for 2010. Just an absolute fantasy footy God. My only concern is if Carlton decide to throw Joseph on him, although from memory he normally goes to Didak.

lake-v-saints-pf246a.jpg

3. Brian Lake
Average vs opponent since start of 2008: 121
Average over the last five rounds: 123
Average at venue 2010 scores: 121

I've said it before, but my 2nd biggest regret of the 2010 SuperCoach season is not trading the 'artist formerly known as Brian Harris' into my team when he was worth $452,500. Since then seven of his eleven scores have been 110+, two have been under 100 and the final two have been 100 on the dot. Earlier in the year, big Briza pumped out a lazy 179 against the hapless Roos, and I wouldn't put it past him to repeat the performance, especially given his form over the past month, which include scores of 162 & 156.

GaryAblettR052008_1.jpg

4. Gary Ablett Jnr.
Average vs opponent since start of 2008: 192
Average over the last five rounds: 112
Average at venue 2010 scores: *hasn't played at ANZ this year.

Ablett's record against Sydney speaks for itself. Since the start of 2008, he's produced an insanely epic run of 254, 155, 164 and as recently as Round 7 this year, a 203. However, these scores were achieved when he was playing most of his time in the midfield, which perhaps isn't the case at present. This in addition to a 'drop' in form, are the only reasons Gaz Jnr isn't #1 on this list. Could burn all who decide not to give him the C, but personally I'm prepared to roll the dice and go with Swan/Goddard.

748983-fremantle.jpg

5. Aaron Sandilands
Average vs opponent since start of 2008: 100
Average over the last five rounds: 109
Average at venue 2010 scores: 120

Had his only off-game for the year last week, putting up a score of 45, which wasn't aided by his lowest possession count for the year (8). Apart from that, he's been the dominant ruckman for 2010, amassing an amazing 613 hitouts, whilst nine of his 17 SC scores have been in excess of 120 - the figure he averages at Subiaco this year.

Now, to this week's smokie candidate:

Green_Rd308_246deep.jpg

Brad Green
Average vs opponent since start of 2008: 118
Average over the last five rounds: 115
Average at venue 2010 scores: *Melbourne haven't played at the GABBA this year.

Coming of an unlikely win against the Swans, and heading up to play arguably 2010's most disappointing team, I get the feeling Big Brad Green could go BANG at the GABBA and drop a big SC score on us. Averaging 115 over the past five weeks, a period which has seen him score 123, 119 & 161, you can't help but think that kind of form will continue against the Lions.

and to round out the top 10

Player - Ave vs opponent since start of 2008, 5RA and @ Venue ave for 2010

6. Judd - 109, 111, 124
7. Selwood - 93, 142, *Cats haven't played at ANZ this year.
8. Montagna - 112, 117, 116
9. Nicky Dal - 115, 119, 113
10. Boyd - 106, 115, 116

There were a number of other candidates who could've made up positions 6-10, so if there is anyone who you think should get a mention, comment in the thread or PM me and I'll tell you if they were close or not.

OPPORTUNITY SHOP

Defenders

Corey Enright - $370,300 (B/E 123)
The third horror week in a row for the All-Australian defender. Seems he's gone to the Heath Shaw School of 'How not to handle a tag' with Albert Proud doing the job on him last week. The question is; will he be able to break it between now and SC finals? If not, he could drop even further in price, especially with that breakeven of 120+, a score he hasn't hit since round 4 this year. First time his price has dropped below $400k since prior to 2005. With other Cats likely to be rested, perhaps some much needed midfield time is on the cards?

Broughton_Rd309_2_246a.jpg

Greg Broughton - $458,300 (B/E 108)
Remember this guy? Well, if I had four trades instead of three, Greg Broughton would be the second inclusion to my side this week along with Riewoldt. The guy is like the Marc Murphy of the backline in the sense that he hardly ever pumps out a sub-90 score. Although this is his second year of AFL, I have no doubt the guy will finish the year strongly. Such is my faith in him, that I may draft him in regardless of my trade situation, just so he can be apart of my team.

Ryan Hargrave & Jarrad Harbrow - $433,200 & $432,300 (B/E 52 & 28)
Both play for the same team. Both in a similar position when it comes to SuperCoach. With the Dogs looking to consolidate their top four spot, one of these two could come in pretty handy as a D6 or D7. Their last three games have been as follows; Hargrave (89, 124 & 96) & Harbrow (120, 117 & 86).

Midfielders
Bryce Gibbs - $474,800 (B/E 113)
Part of a sharp midfield, has classy skills at his disposal and the cheapest he's been all year. All pretty good factors that argue a solid case for bringing the young South Australian in to complete your midfield. If you had've told me at the start of the year I could grab Gibbs as my 6th midfielder for under $480,000 at some point in the year, I would've said "Thankyou very much."

Brad Sewell - $454,700 (B/E 19)
Not the cheapest he's been for the year, but given Hawthorn's form, Sewelly could be a good pick-up if you don't own a fully upgraded midfield. Over the last three weeks, we've seen him finally get his possession count up over 20 each week, which has resulted in scores of 127, 132 & 97. Shouldn't get rested as the Hawks will want to get as high a ladder position as possible.

Rucks
Dean Cox - $399,600 (B/E 128)
Dropped under $400,000 for the first time in a LONG time. Scored 33 last week, but still has an attainable breakeven for this week's derby game. Not the player he was last year, or the year before, but still a good second ruck option. IMO however, not as good as this bloke...

Darren Jolly - $461,600 (B/E 82)
I realise this guy has been more affordable at earlier stages of 2010, but I think he could finish the year as the second highest scoring ruckman behind Sandi. Averaging a tick under 110 over the past five weeks, which has come about because a) he plays for the in-form side of the competition and b) he spends time down forward, which has seen him net four goals over the last seven weeks.

Forwards
Nick Riewoldt - $437,700 (B/E 98)
I think this is pretty self-explainitory. When he tragically went down in Round 3 this year, I think we all secretly saved a trade for when the time came that he'd be back playing. Showed all the signs last week against the Hawks that he's back to his best and is ready to tear a game to shreds, and against the Bombers, it this week could be it. I'll wait for the final teams to be announced just as a precaution, but but 8pm Friday night, young Nathan Fyfe (who has been very serviceable) will be making way for Big Saint Nick.

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK

Andrew Moore (DEF/FORW, PTA) - Ave 39 (2 games)

TALKING POINTS

1. The Riewoldt Trade

It's been a long wait, but finally we can bring the big fella back into out teams. Could easily tear the Bombers a new one.

2. No more Reviews

Just letting everyone know that at this stage, I don't think I can continue on with doing both a Preview and Review each week. Just takes up too much of my time, especially with Uni getting busier. Will definitely keep doing the Weekly Preview, but I think a fair bit of the content in the Review isn't really required. If I get time, I'll do it, but it will no longer be a weekly thing. Apologies.

Great work Spud, I liked your reviews but I understand with uni getting busier. You are still one of the hardest working posters on BF SuperCoach

Re: Round 18 Preview

Tough Decision this week for captain - If i win i obtain 4th spot. Opponent will have GAJ captain. I have Swan and he doesn't so I'm thinking of putting Swan captain ahead of GAJ and hoping for another 150 plus and for GAJ to play his forward role and score another sub 100.

Re: Round 18 Preview

Anyone know whats happened to Goodwin?
Ankle injury, club is hopeful that he will play next week but there were reports last week that he may have played his last game so I am going to trade this week for the first time since Barlow went down.

Goodwin > $450 000 Defender possibly Broughton/Duffield type

Re: Round 18 Preview

my 2 big outs this week are Maguire and Shaw. i didn't see the Brizzy game last week - was maguire that bad that he deserves to get dropped? also anyone got aany idea when shaw will be back. i thought he would return this week...

Re: Round 18 Preview

Carlton usually don't throw an explicit tag onto Swan, they let him essentially play head to head versus Judd. Joseph went onto Davis last time and from memory Gibbs had a crack at Didak. If Carlton can flood, break quickly out of the backline when they do get possession and run and carry down the corridor whilst utilising the speed of the smalls up forward, not allowing Collingwood to structure their backline properly, Swan and Collingwood in general will score less than usual. Swan is basically untaggable anyway and teams prefer to put their best taggers on players who cause much more damage from less disposals.

Too many ifs for me Oz.

Swan the form player of the comp. No way I would bet against him this week.

No doubt that he is the number one captain choice based on form, however if his team is deprived of the opportunity to play the game at their own tempo, that is slowing it down and spreading wide and are caught fast on the rebound constantly, they will be forced to adapt in order to combat leaving the corridor exposed and the lack of backmen that can account for our smalls.

The advantage we have is our smalls against them, besides O'Brien none of their backmen can really play well on smalls so if we can utilise our running mids (ie: Kade Simpson becomes incredibly important along with Murphy) we could give them some trouble. Unlike Judd, Ablett and the like, Swan will not get the ball hundreds of times if his side's gameplan is exposed, his game is tailored for their style of game (dour anti-football, slow, boring, possession based and pressure based on opposition ball carriers). Unlike Geelong, they don't have the flexibility to adapt their gamestyle if they are being beaten, look at the two Melbourne games this season that they played in, they didn't lose but came close as Melbourne picked them apart through run and carry straight down the corridor, flooding the backline and then countering down the relatively open middle. Collingwood weren't able to adapt and got over the line merely because of an umpiring mistake in the first game and inexperience in the second game.

Hopefully Ratten has a decent gameplan as he did against St Kilda and Adelaide earlier this year, if he decides to play the way he's sent them out over the last few weeks, we might aswell not show up, and Swan will dominate.

Re: Round 18 Preview

A tough two hours ahead. Hodge or Ablett captain? Time will tell.....

JB or Hall out for Riewodlt?

Or wait another week then trade Roo in?

Ahhh..........

Even though I haven't mentioned him in my Preview, I think Hodge is more likely to produce score big than Ablett, however I still think that if Ablett is up an about early, he could push the 200 again.

Have no idea with Brown/Hall. Hall looking more likely, but we all know what the Brown-dog is capable of when fit and firing.
