Preview 2011 2nd Ruckman

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

We all know that L Brown finished the season as our 2nd Ruckman where Wood and Fraser Failed.

It worked very well but I still have a Worry IF Jolly goes down we won't have a Recognized Ruckman in the Game.

So do we have a 2nd Recgonised Ruckman in the Game or as a Sub and Here are the Choices we have at the moment:

  • Wood - Has shown Potential but mostly has been a let down
  • Ceglar - 19 Year Old Ruckman who has Potential but still a Kid and has some Knee Issues at the Moment
  • Keeffe - Show Potential as a Mobile Ruckman but been playing FB or CHB most of the Time at VFL Level.
Does not look Fantastic after Jolly but I guess we can Hope that Wood can come on this season,

Your Thoughts?

Ruckman as a sub is suicide. That position should be taken by either quick players that can go forward or mid, i.e Krak or tall wingman/hbf who can go forward i.e Goldsack.

In regards to Leigh Brown, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Wood is good depth for both the first and second ruck position and as good as what most other teams have.

He has stepped up in the past with the responsibility of first ruck duties and i'd back him in to do that again.

If we had an injury to both Wood and Jolly we would have issues but that would be the same for any other team in the league.

If Brown was playing, purely on his ruckwork i'd have McNamara as the best choice but the rest of his game isn't up to AFL level yet. Keeffes ruckwork isn't up to it but the rest of his game is.

If we lost both Jolly and Wood it would become an interesting dilemma.

Out of the list you just gave us Dave, Keeffe is probably the most promising. As you said he is a mobile ruckman but, he is not a sole ruckman (i.e has more strings to his bow) and therefore can offer more to the side especially with the new sub rule.

The thing with Wood, is that when Jolly came to the club he was pushed further back in the food chain and became the fourth ruck (behind Jolly, L. Brown, and Fraser) which, meant he had an even less possibilty of getting AFL games. Even in the VFL he still had to play second fiddle to Fraser and had to share his ruck duties with Keeffe and McNamara among others. Instead of thriving on this competition and attempting to add more strings to his bow, he became lazy, unmotivated and it was probably a blow to his confidence. This has been evident in his preseason form to date (especially coming last in the time trial). He has talent but, he needs to get his head straight. He needs to thrive on the competition / push himself towards becoming more versitile and, put legitmate pressure for a spot in the 21.

Ceglar is young and inexperienced but, needs time to develop in the VFL and shouldn't be considered as a legitmate option this season at least.

Leigh brown is our second Ruckman until such a time he gives us a reason or wood gives us a reason (I have my doubts) to change that

And a ruckman as a sub is very doubtful unless he can play as a legitimate key forward or key defender.

Slightly off topic, if you're selected as the sub and for whatever reason you don't get used in the game, does it still count on your 'games played' total?

With the new sub rule Leigh Brown is now the perfect second ruckmen, and most other teams will be looking to put in place a similar set up with the 1st ruck doing about 70-80% of the ruck work and the second ruck playing as a kpp for most of the time and acting mainly as a chop out ruck.

You don't really want to have to carry 2 specialist rucks in your side if you don't need to. Obviously as you mention, it gives you a problem if your specalist ruck goes down during a game, but that's life.

Leroy is not a good option to step into Jolly's shoes if he is injured. He's great as a mobile 2nd ruck option, although Keefe might give him a run for his money, but really Wood would be the genuine tap-ruck option after Jolly you would think.

Don't forget Ceglar, we have Ceglar too.

wood is going to prove a lot of people on here wrong, has the ability just needs an improved attitude. his best performances for us has been as the sole ruckman so maybe he finds it hard to make an impact with limited time on the ball. remember jolly was crap until he was 25 and went to sydney and from that moment on he improved out of sight. have a bit of faith people

I see the current depth chart as this:

1. Jolly - Clear cut no. 1
2. L. Brown - clear cut no. 2
3. McNamara - overtook Wood towards the end of the last season in the VFL
4. Wood - needs to earn his spot back as no. 1 vfl ruckman, it shouldn't be given to him by default. Probably needs another string to his bow. Prehaps a pinch hit tall forward like Jolly.
5. Ceglar - rookie learning the job

Other
Keeffe - Will continue to play defense in 2011

I agree with others on this. If Jolly went down Wood would be able to take over the #1 ruck duties and do them reasonably well, but I don't think he fits into our game plan being the #2 ruck along with Jolly the way he currently plays (not damaging or flexible enough and plays his best footy playing loose).

I think if Leroy got injured or was in bad form Keefe would be a better option as the #2 ruckman.

If Brown was injured who would replace him as second ruck?

I think a Wood/Jolly combo would be fine with Jolly played more forward.

The other options would be Dawes and Keeffe, probably in that order.

Wood when he plays the no.1 ruck role is often quite competitive. You wouldn't want him being the no.1 ruckman all season, but if Jolly misses 2-3 games, Wood is fine.

If L.Brown misses games then L.Keeffe is the natural and in form replacement. Can play minor ruck minutes and can play anywhere pretty comfortably, so he provides similar flexibility to L.Brown.

Just while we're on rucking, who else thought Leroy got slaughtered by the umpires in GF II - the reckoning?

Realistically, the new interchange rule plays right into our hands considering we have a guy like Leigh Brown. He is now the prototype backup ruck. He'll also find it easier going because a lot of teams will be using pinch-hitting rucks...so he is going to avoid having to ruck against the giant 2nd ruckman which will suit him.

We'd all love a guy like Wood or Shae to push through...but the only way I think they will is if Jolly goes down. If Leigh Brown goes down, I can see us using Dawes as a ruck. I can't see us going in with 2 big rucks this year considering I think our sub will be a speedy player.

Some bad calls:
- Shae over Wood
- Dawes to do some Ruck

Good call:
- Brown is actually Rucking better this year, just needs to pick up the rest of his game

If Brown went down would we play Wood & Jolly (when he's back)?
If Brown and Jolly were out would we Ruck Wood one out?
