2011 WORLD GROUP II - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Fed_Cup_World_Group_II

A bit early I know and I don't really expect much traffic to this thread, but we can't completely ignore women's tennis.

The Fed Cup in recent years has been a two-horse affair with Russia and Italy each winning 3 each of the last 6 titles. Australia returns to the World Group I tier for the first time since 2004. Australia last made the final in 1993 and last won it in 1974. While having the luxury of a home tie first up, Australia (Stosur) will need to be at their very best to get past the dual-reigning champions Italy.

The side will basically be relying on Stosur but if Groth is able play well I can't see any reason why the Aussies can't win. Schiavone is having injury problems as well.

imo we are a sneaky chance at winning it this year, groth has come of age the last few months and is capable of beating good players now. If stosur is on song she wont lose many matches i believe. The important player is groth, she is the barometer, if she plays consistently well we have a huge chance at winning it.

Draw is done.

Saturday (1pm on Fox Sports 3, Viewers Choice)
Groth vs Schiavone
Stosur vs Pennetta

Sunday (11am on Fox Sports 3)
Stosur vs Schiavone
Groth vs Pennetta
Rodionova/Stubbs vs Vinci/Errani

Stosur is yet to take a set from Pennetta in their 3 previous meetings.

Pennetta was the one Sam ahd the horrific match against ehr last year in Sydney. trying to rememebr if she played her again last year, i don't think so. will be tough but if Sam steps up and plays good tennis, she it the ebtter player. Hopefully Groth can come guns blazing against Schiavone and maybe give her a bit of a shock but Schiavone probably has a bit too much fight for her.

Can't wait to watch tomorrow. I think both will be quality matches and they probably will both go to 3 sets. Think it will be 1-1 at the end of the first singles rubbers.

Groth takes out Schiavone. Pretty poorly advertised by Fox, tbf.

Wow, that is a huge win for Jarka. Could've been straight sets considering she pissed away the tie break.
Does anyone know who her usual coach is?

Great stuff from Groth, couldn't really watch because I don't wanna juice the bandwidth but good recovery after losing the first set. Groth is definitely my favourite women's player (don't normally have fave's in women's either). Hopefully Sam can turn round her form against Penetta.

Well at least Stosur took a set of Penetta this time but she still loses in 3. She basically pissed that first set up against the wall though. Was serving for it at 5-4 up and got broken back to love, even though her serve was very solid up until then. Disappointing.

what is it with pennetta? she owns stosur when imo clearly at both players best level stosur is a better player. Pennetta is a great defensive player, this is 1 glaring weakness in stosur's game, she is pretty average when forced on the defensive. Kvitova troubled her time and again by making her defend. She must learn to be a much better defensive player or she will stagnate this year.

Sam needs to step up to be brutally honest, she only can be a top player for so long, she's been losing these sorts of matches so far this year. Tie is still ina very interesting place, might be relying on Groth here.

Stosur never fails to disappoint. Maybe if she wasn't ranked #5 we'd learn to expect what she so often delivers, which is little.

The tie was over if she won and now Italy are probably favourites to go through.

Gavin Hopper
Ahh right, thanks.

With Sharapova and Kuznetsova somehow losing to Razzano and Cornet, makes today even more huge. Almost a cakewalk to the final for the winner if the Frenchies keep pulling the upsets.

Sam needs to win this morning, cause im not too confident Jarka can carry the burden of keeping Australia in the tie.

ive got more confidence in Jamilia then Sam to be honest

She has the weapons but Sam wont be a top player with her mental side of the game - its pretty piss poor if u ask me

Sam goes down 6-7(1) 6-3 5-7.

Now up to Jarka to keep us in it, sure if she fires she can take this. But hopefully the occasion, ie playing Fed Cup for the first time/must win to keep Aus in it, doesn't get to her when she begins missing her shots. Needs to keep it all in check.

was there ever any doubt that Stosur would lose if it got close at the end?

Schiavone = gutsy fighter with real tennis instinct
Stosur = pea heart with the tactical brain of a junior (and the worst backhand in the top 100)

Jarka lost pretty easily 6-3, 6-2. I'm sorry to say this but the entire blame of this tie falls on Sam, she should of won one of her two matches. Opportunity missed here.

She basically carried Australia into the World Group, so I'm gonna gut her some slack.
But yeah, no question, a genuine chance blown big time.

I'd say before the tie we would have taken 1 win out of 2 from Jarka, but 0 from 2 from Sam is unacceptable. For a top 5 player to lose twice in two days in your own country is simply not acceptable.

Sam's year has been
- Brisbane: 2R straight sets loss to #42
- Sydney: 2R three set loss to #25
- Melbourne: 3R straight sets loss to #28
- Hobart: two three set losses to #16 and #4

She has a stack of points to defend leading up to the French. She better pull her finger out.

Well what a let down, Sam appears to be in a rut, either that or people have figured out how to beat her. Jarka is actually better mentally than her, yes she gets pretty angry but she still seems to be able to keep the nerves and pressure in check. For a top 10 player, Sam doesn't actually beat that many of the other players in the 10. Have fun trying to defend all the clay season point mate.

EDIT: just read Sam apparently lost 4.5 kilos in the off season or something. Is it possible it might not've been a good idea?
