Not the thread for it, but looking at the list in full like that, it makes me think about who is under the pump to stay on the list. It is getting harder and harder which means we are getting stronger and stronger.

Those on the senior list needing to step up this year are:

Austin
Thornton
O'hAilpin
Walker

A disastrous year could put others at risk however.

I suspect we would trade away players for draft picks rather than delist them. Some players need more time ... Kerr for example. It will be older players at risk one would suspect.

Agree ODN,

The most interesting case is Walker. He is clearly the most talented of the lot outlined above, but he just can't find a position. I think that HFF moving into the midfield is where he will shine, but I am not sure if it will be with us. Wouldn't surprise me if he went to GWS next year and we got an end of first rounder in return. Best of luck to Andrew and I hope he tears it up

The salary cap puts more pressure on as well, the new younger versions cost less and we have some key players who will have their hands out for more coin.

I think Austin should be kept on for as long as possible - A rookie pickup if that's what it comes to. Would hate to think he's definately a candidate for delisting - but in reality it's probably the truth.

I'd put money on Kerr and Dare coming up the goods by the end of the year. They'll be pushing for selection due to stellar Ants' seasons I'm sure!

Need a back-up dinosaur ruck in the Rookie Draft just as cover.

I think the way we drafted shows a real lack of faith in Levi and Irish to cover key spots for the next couple of years.

With the players you listed, I came up with an average of 184cm. Last year our average was allegedly 188cm and 87kg

Obviously it's the 195cm-199cm group that has improved massively this draft. It's gone from 3 to 6, and we've added some serious quality. Hendo was the only top-quality developing tall in that group, and now he's joined by 3 others. Setanta is more of a depth player. It's going to be hard for Levi unfortunately.

We basically drafted most of a quality spine in one hit. Still can't believe we were able to do this. An amazing result.

:)

Not sure about a lack of faith or just acknowledging that Watson, McCarthy and Mitchell were just too good to pass up on.

Also, Irish will be 28 next year and has been a work in progress for about 7 years with mixed results - showed some good signs at the start of last year and then dropped away. The club probably would have been happy to trade him if they could.

Levi was pick 44 in last year's rookie draft and was always a speculative pick. The club's done pretty well with rookie selections and I wouldn't write Levi off yet. As I said, I don't think the club and most supporters for that matter would have predicted that Watson, McCarthy and Mitchell would have been available for selection by the club.:)

If all of those talls come on, then we will not be able to retain them all. As long as they can get some decent game time, we will then be able to trade them and keep topping up our quality youth, or trade them for a half decent developed mid from another side.

Draft well, develop well and maintain the depth, then trade off the quality fringe players to buy yourself back into the first round again. It's nigh on impossible but any team that can do this can stay up there indefinitely. We are starting to get the depth where other teams actually want our fringe players.

For a decade any player cut from Carlton was for the compost heap, and half of our starting 22 had little to no value in a trade. That was humiliating. We have now addressed this.
