We need to make the 8 next year.

Hopefully a couple of Astbury, Post, Grimes and Griffiths can step up to fill another Key Positions spot.

We need a ruckman. Throw our first pick to Freo and hope that they will offer up Clarke.

with sndi getting the toe injury again, they will not part with clarke for anything i reckon.

imporvement in some players has been a major positives.

our drafting and pick ups have been very good to good. girgg and houli still have aspects of their games to work apon but have been handy pick up's as has miller.

negatives. while rance has improved we still have the 3rd worst defence int he AFL. its needs to be worked on tirelssly over the pre-season. one of the best forward lines btw.

positives

improvement of vickery has been the clear highlight for me. i wrote him off this season but his importance going forward will be immense. midfielders win medals but talls are much more important to structure

delidio emerging as a force in defense and in the middle. make no mistake he will play there more next season. i now take back the ridiculous suggestion to trade him..haha

negatives
still a lot of players that are not up to it. farmer, edwards, nason, gourdis which need to be trimmed as soon as they can be

the forward press we have is rubbish. some major alterations need to be made to it.

still have extremely poor ball use and we often get caught out with the wrong players having the ball in their hands in the defensive 50

our forward structure was a mess today and for most of the season. riewoldt and vickery are played to close together, it crowds the forward 50 and makes those cheap goals harder to come by. we always seem to have to work so hard for goals

ruck was poor. gus improved to an extent and ill tip my hat to him on that aspect, he really had a crack after he was dropped and i cant fault him on the effort but he is lacking the class unfortunately. i have super high hopes for derrickx next season, i really do. massive motor, has a crack and is a behemoth

Positives
Development of younger players. We have a spine now and the young guys win our games. Such a change from a couple of years ago.
Game plan coming along OK
OK draft pick and we did a little better than I expected in terms of wins/losses

Negatives
No real ruck development - except for TV (which might be all we need)
Up and down form made me get all fired up - depressed - all fired up - depressed --> repeat cycle as per last X years

Next year
game plan consistently performed
Bigger stronger and fitter players being more consistent and performing better
Maybe finals 50% imho
Father/son comes out of nowhere and is obvious No. 1 pick in the draft

looking back at last season and trying to work out where we have improved and by how much is interesting.

Forwardline

Last season we relied heavily on Jack converting our inside fifties, this year we probably had more inside fifties but had more avenues to goal. So our forwardline has improved marginally but in the right Direction. Vickorys improvement to become a strong marking option also looks good for the future. What we need now is that dangerous small to mid Forward... McDonald when he gets his fitness up??? or do we go out and chase one? or do we except Mortons lack of defensive game and hope he kicks his 2-3 goals a game?? Nahas has locked in a spot in the forwardline with his hard work tackling etc.... just needs to build a bit more awareness and rid his game from being caught with the ball, but he and King have that Defensive small forward spot locked for now.

Midfield

Went backwards a little IMO due mainly to inconsistency that comes with youth and possibly the influence of Cousins. I'm on the record about being dissapointed with the treatment of Tuck but to the clubs credit they have realised his importance around the packs and we improved once he was back..... I think the club was hoping that we could get to finals with out him. He needs to play round 1 next season and force a young player to take his spot.

Rucks

I'd keep Graham and Browne for 1 more year atleast. Plenty of other dead wood to clean out before depleteing our Ruck stocks. Hopefully Tom X comes good. Only trade for a established ruck if he doesn't cost too much.

Defence

The area in which we have made the most ground without it really showing. If Rance can continue his improvement we have AA defender. Needs to work on reading the play and taking the game one. I would have liked to see him play lose man in defence like a Paul Roos type role at some stage but all in all we have found a pretty good defender to build a defence around. Grimes is the other huge finbd for us hopefully he can recover and hold down the second key defender spot. Looks to have everything that is needed to be an elite stopper.
Batchelor looks sensational and will fill out more and along with Houli, Grigg, Helbig and Conca will put pressure on Newmans spot long term. Competition for spots is slowly getting better. Would have been good if Connors had of cemented a spot their also.

All in all we are a step closer in finding the pieces that are going to get us into finalks and then top 4.
Next season we will be looking to reward players more on Merrit.

I haven't looked to closely on who we should delist but if Farmer is still at Punt road then I will be surprised also.... I can not understand why he was played in the last few rounds.

Positives

-Vickery, Rance, Nahas and Grimes all improved out of sight. All best 22 when last year they weren't:thumbsu:
-Martin, Cotchin= Matchwinners
-Forwardline not depending on Jack kicking 6 to win us a game, even spread was awesome
-Batchelor, and to a lesser extent Conca, look to be really good players that should cement there place in the 21 over pre-season
-General improvement

Negatives

-Ruckstocks...........wtf, fix it as soon as possible, trade for a decent ruckman, delist Graham, give Browne 1 more year
-Gameplan still needs bucketloads of work, we struggle with the forward press and let teams go coast to coast all the ****ing time:thumbsd:
-Defence decimated by injury
-Losing to Port, GC:thumbsd::thumbsd:

Expectations

-Lids into the middle next year, resting on half back
-We trade for a ruckman
-Tuck played from round 1
-Finals.......aim for them
