With 22 of the 30 teams officially looking forward to 2013, thought it was time to start up the thread to discuss the happenings during this time.

Note worthy news so far:

Terry Francona to be announced as Indians new Manager tomorrow.

Bobby Valentine let go by the Red Sox

After being talked about as the managerial signing of the off season last year, Ozzie Guillen could be shown the door any day now.

The off season can be a big as the season itself and will be in full swing in 4 weeks time:)

Francona apparently has good relations with the Cleveland management- Shapiro and his buddy (whose name I forget) hired him after the Phillies fired him back in 2001- he was an executive assistant there before taking over in boston.

Phillies have canned a bunch of their coaching staff, but looks like Charlie gets another year as they groom Ryno to take his place (He will be third base coach this coming year, while Juan Samuel moves to first).

Firmly believe the Yanks should/will go after another starter. Phelps performed admirably when called up, but he's still young. Kuroda went above and beyond, but Hughes still gets hit out of the park too often. And Pettite is still on the wrong side of 40.

Personally, I think they should be giving Boone Logan a starting role, but Joe knows better.

Shaun Marcum is a FA (last time I checked) he's the one I'd want most (out of the obvious big names)

Reds have extended dusty Baker two more years.

Red Sox apparently will interview Yankees bench coach Tony Pena for their managerial spot.

I hope the Astros spend some money on a top young player or 2

Problem is, the good young players aren't up for sale- they are still pretty much tied to their teams. But through the trades Houston has made, they have some talent coming along that should eb ready to step in at Minute Maid in the enxt year or two. Singleton, Cossart, and Springer may all be ready in april, which could give a boost to the team.

Just want a decent 3 and 4 hitter.

Everyone has their price, a-rod perhaps lol?

Justin Upton might be traded but he'd cost too much.

Yeah- and there is your problem. The Astros are making a concerted effort to go with youth. Don't think you have a whole lot out there that will help that much. Better to suck it up another year, give the youngsters the time, and then go with the team in 2014.

Wouldn't touch A-Rod with a barge pole, and I think you are right with Upton.

Blue Jays and Red Sox are discussing compensation for Jon Farrell becoming Red Sox manager- he still has one year left in Tee-Oh.....

I'm happy to suck but some veteran leadership for the kids is needed, a number 1 pitcher and good hitter for the middle of the lineup

But it shows what happens when good teams slump at teh wrong time of the year. Sure, you can point fingers at over paid players, but they have been in the playoffs 17 of the last 18 years. The worry is the decline that some of the players are showing. A-Rod will probably be dealt, with the yanks picking up a huge part of his salary. Swisher will leave for free agency- the yanks won't pay him what he is looking for. No question jeter is back, though the Yankees broadcasters are saying he might not be ready at the start of spring training. Texeira is a big worry- you're paying him a whole lot of money, and his offensive production is really starting to slip. Are you going to pay big bucks for a guy who hits 40+ homers, but hits just above the Mendoza Line and strikes out a lot (Granderson)? I wouldn't worry about Cano- he will come back- he just had a horrible stretch there, and is one of your best players. Also, you have a whole year to worry about Cano's contract- nothing big about signing him long term this off season.

The real concern will be starting pitching- CC is getting older, and who else do you really have except a group of guys that might be #3 or 4 starters at best. They might step up for a game or three, but will they slot in as a second stopper behind CC?

I'd expect a couple of pretty big changes this offseason.
I'm not really worried about Cano. Agreed, he's simply too good a player for a stretch like that to affect him permanently. And TBH, I'm not really worried about Granderson. It's ok for a team to carry one batter that is either boom or bust, and 85+ home runs in his 2 seasons as a Yankee is an acceptable return for that player. Problem is....we have 3 or 4 players who think it's ok to boom or bust atm.

Agree on Swisher. Think he's gone. Pity, I like the guy a lot, a lot of fun to be a fan of, and does a lot of good things off the field, but I'll be very surprised if he's still in pinstripes next season.

A-Rod is the hard one. Don't know what to do there. No one is gonna wear his salary, not even close to a lot of it. I've read some stories about Miami nibbling about, and he's a Miami native, but can even they afford it?

Yankees will pay 100 mill of the contract lol

Exactly. So if we have to pay 100 of the 130 million still outstanding, why not keep him and hope like hell he either a) finds some form or b) gets so pissed at not being an auto starter that he waives the No Trade clause and leaves himself?

Talk is they just want to get rid of him and move on, they need to get younger.

Like Geelong in 94 and 95, they no longer have the legs to go from March to November, in June they are talked about as the best team in baseball then come now they are out of form.

Need to turn over A-Rod and one or two others get the younger players in to get them through October.

It's a tough one to do, especially when you have big contracts- the Phillies and Yankees are very good examples of that. Kept thwe same core the last few years, and are now coming up short (in the Phillies' case, WAY short this year). Phils won in 2008, returned to the series in 2009, and folks were saying the last two years we were the team to ebat. Well, the Giants showed us differently in 2010, and the Cards put us out quickly in 2011. Meanwhile, our core of Howard, Utley, and Rollins moved into their early to mid 30s and started picking up injuroies. Yanks have had somewhat the same deal since winning in 2009.

Management (and the fans) love the teams that win the flag)- but it is hard to make the changes that are really necessary ebcause of loyalties to players (and in some cases, big contracts, which makes them even harder to move).

Doc gonna get back to his old self? Has to if they want to even think about playoffs.

Hal Steinbrenner is a lot more cautious with money than his dad was tho. He won't just burn that money. Agree the Yanks need to get younger, but they also need to find a starter, maybe two (and I mean quality, not a #3,4 or 5 starter).

The transition won't all happen this offseason.
