Geelong # 16. Mason Shaw - KPF - 197CM 82KG - 15/01/94 - South Fremantle

Shaw is a genuine key forward, who I rate as one of the best KPF's in the draft. Shaw has played at a high level and been a consistent performer for the last 2 years. Having been the South Fremantle Colts key forward in the last 2 colt's premeirship teams, having kicked 7 goals in 2011 GF and 5 in the 2012 GF. Shaw has also played as a ruckman at colt's level and whilst he has done this very well, I believe at AFL level he will be used as a KPF only. Shaw is very strong in the air, moves well and a very solid kick both on the run or from a set shot. Shaw is the sort of player that you could build a forward line around. The prospect of Shaw and Tom Hawkins anchoring the Geelong forward line is a scary prospect, as it would leave Vardy to play the 3rd tall forward. By way of comparison, he reminds me of a cross between Kurt Tippett and Josh Kennedy. (Without the Fred Flintstone run up)

Other considerations:Kristian Jaksch, Nick Vlaustin however they have already been taken. Geelong are in the position to take the best available and I think that Shaw is one of the best KPF's to have come out of WA for some time.

In realitity I cant see him getting past Fremantles pick at # 17.

I wouldn't say you passed on Bourke as he could have been a bargain, imo he is worth a pick between 30 - 50 but Geelong wanted flexibility with their picks to trade so passed on him. Of those players you listed only Hawkins is assured of a place in the forward line, Pods is getting old and showed signs of his age last season, and the rest whilst talented are unproven, so there shouldn't be an issue with taking a KPF. Besides he Monocle selected him as best available not on need, and he knows loads more than you so I wouldn't criticise.

Pick 13: Gold Coast - Ben Kennedy

For Gold Coast’s first pick, and probably only pick I think, I decided to pick up Ben Kennedy. I rate him very highly, he is a super talent and would probably go higher if he wasn’t so short. In the future I see him playing up forward and rotating through the midfield, similar to what Brent Harvey plays like. I think that he will fit in well at the Gold Coast playing up forward as a small crumbing player whilst also pushing up the ground and having stints in the middle. This should suit Gold Coast as no player here has anywhere near the talent of their starting midfield (Ablett, Bennell, Swallow and O’Meara) so they could use someone who has the ability to make an impact in other places and then rotate through the midfield. Still this is a best available pick.

Kennedy’s form this year has been inconsistent but mainly pretty good. His champs this year were excellent he averaged 26 disposals, kicked 9 goals, was efficient with his ball use and showed that he could break games open. In 2011 he showed how much potential he had playing as a small forward, this year he took his development to the next level and showed that he has the ability to dominate as a mid and go forward and kick goals. His form at SANFL level, and even reserves/U18 has been pretty average and I would have expected better. He has had groin injuries (OP maybe), and he does look a little slower this year compared to last year, but this shouldn’t be an issue. I have heard rumours he doesn’t want to leave Adelaide, but as I don’t get to interview him I don’t know if they are true so this is rating is purely on talent and how he will translate to AFL.

As for what his strengths are:

- Athleticism – looks to have elite pace and agility, uses regularly to get in and out of trouble very easily, can break lines and regularly does this taking bounces. He also has a great vertical leap which helps him in the marking contest (puts him back to normal)
- Outside ball winning ability – he is a very well rounded player, he can find the ball well on the outside, he wins one on one contests well, breaks the lines, his spread is great and he runs hard. I think his endurance is pretty good but has room for improvement.
- Footy smarts – just a natural player, knows where to run how to get it, finds the ball easily just plays smart. He finds space easily in the forward line which imo is the sign of a good player.
- Ability as a small forward – He shows a ton of potential as a small forward he can mark the ball well overhead, has a good leap and uses his body well. Also great at crumbing the ball of packs, can kick the freak goal and really lift a team with a great 5 minute burst. He is one of the best goal kicking mids in this years draft who can have a real impact forward.
- Excitement machine – He can really spark a team, runs round players, takes the game on like few in this years draft and does it well, has that touch of arrogance about him that just makes him look like a good player.
- Disposal – Ben has a great left foot kick, good distance, penetration, kicks it flat and hard, good decision maker but can blaze away and could do with lowering his eyes. Still it is normal to see him pick the ball up take a couple of bounces then deliver a lace out pass to a forward. He also has good hands round the contests and can give a quick handball.
- Very clean – I rarely have seen him fumble, picks the ball up well at pace and has quick hands.

Question Marks:
- Height – biggest issue (excuse the pun), he is very small at 174cm, so may struggle against the bigger bodies, but this is not that bigger of an issue for mine as he is reasonably strong over the ball and quite nuggetty. Still it will impact on his draft ranking.
- Defensive pressure/tackling – needs to improve this area of the game, capable of chasing and tackling but doesn’t do it enough or consistently. This will improve in the AFL imo.
- Inside ball work – not really a question mark at U18 level but may be at AFL level, he is a good clearance winner and just seems to win contests, great at extracting the ball and then just breaking free of congestion with speed and agility, may struggle in the AFL due to his body size. Still definitely has the potential to be a reasonable inside ball winner, but that’s not what you want him to do imo.
- Form/Injuries this year – has struggled at SANFL level a bit, is this due to bigger bodies and a reflection of how he will end up at AFL level.

All up Ben Kennedy is a super talented prospect who has a few deficiencies in his game that can be fixed. Comparisons to Brent Harvey and Luke Dahlhaus are apt. He can really give a team a lift and should be an important part of the Gold Coast team as a small forward who pushes up the ground.

I's not criticising that the player he chose was no talented I am challenging the premise that Geelong has no need's and would select by talent.
Also while only Hawkins is assured of a spot next year Vardy, Walker, Kerstan, Brown and Hamling are all young promising KPF and you can have too many of those.
For Bourke we could have still thrown his name up as no one traded for him from Gold Coast we may have been able to get him at our lowest pick or left him if someone made a bid

A KPF does not nesarseraly have what it takes to go to KPD, Clurey was a name given to me by knightmare for a KPD.
If you mean our KPF are bad look at Kersten's rankings last year. Vardy and Hawkins have proven there talents at AFL level and Walker as a 19 year old has shown signs.

No drama GFC I chose best available and I think that your Club in most instances goes this way in there selections. Thats just my opinion that first round selections should be best available and not needs based.

I have watched a lot of Hamling and Kerstan in the WAFL Colts and I am of the opinion that Shaw is a significantly better prospect than either of these two by quite some margin. Would have been more than happy had he ended up at WC had we retained pick # 18. I think Shaw will become a very good player at the next level.

I dont have a problem with Clubs loading up with KPP or rucks as they tend to get you overs if you need to trade them at a latter date.

Would have no problem bringing Shaw into the squad. We lost Lynch to the Pies leaving Kennedy and Darling ( I prefer Darling as the third tall option ) as our KPF we also have Faser McInnes who can play at either end so that would allow Shaw a pathway to the team.

I can't see us going tall that early when we have have young KPFs in Hansen, Tarrant, Black, Daw and Curran all in line.

I just had a problem splitting the next batch of midfielders on talent and felt that going for the best available was correct here. I have a feeling that I could get a midfielder/small defender with your next two picks that are not a massive downgrade on who I could have picked with your first selection.

Hansen - Not sure about him long term.
Tarrant - Constantly injured
Black - Liked him a few years ago so he is an option
Daw - Second ruck, so less of a key forward
Curran - Pass

Jaksch you could play forward or back so that opens up plenty of options for the future.

Pick 17 Fremantle - Taylor Garner

You'll have to wait until tomorrow afternoon for the write up and my reasoning. I was deciding between Garner, Josh Simpson, Spencer White and Tom Clurey here.

#18 Collingwood - Nathan Hrovat (VIC - Mid)


This guy just does everything so well and of everyone in this year’s draft would have to have the most complete and AFL ready game. Really lively, upbeat guy who will add positivity around any club and strong leadership. Strongly built small who attacks the ball hard and more often than not wins it. Very high production midfielder. Inside work is a highlight of his game, Hrovat is not just a ball winner but a great inside extractor and by hand always finds the right target. Gets his hands dirty and goes hard into contests and really thrives on the ground ball. Tackling ability excellent. Always composed with ball in hand. Linkup play good and while he will always be an inside player he can also get outside ball in addition to the inside ball. Has good penetration on his kick. By foot is very good and finds his targets in a variety of situations and it’s not just his work by hand that is excellent. Marking ability good and is a marking presence around the ground or up forward. Is willing to back into packs and is more than willing to get crunched. It’s a rare day Hrovat isn’t in the best 1-2 on the ground in any game at any level regardless of who is playing alongside or against him which is really encouraging and suggests that the consistency of performance will continue and that he has a strong routine in place. The drawback other than size with Hrovat is that his athleticism is only average and these are the only areas of his game where he doesn’t compare favourably to the highest rated midfielders this year but at the same time he still does have some ability to burst away from packs and be dangerous, additionally has a nice sidestep so I don’t see his pace as an issue but something I’m sure he will continue to improve. Endurance much better this year and I think with the way he really hunts the footy and once he increases his engine he can become an even higher level accumulator which is exciting. Looking at his improvement this year he has gone from a rookie prospect to a genuine 1st round prospect in a hurry and with that significant rate of improvement I predict further improvement to come. An absolute beauty and if his development this year is any indication still plenty of improvement to come and perhaps the next Sam Mitchell if things go right.

#19 Collingwood - Tom Clurey (VIC - KPD)


Clurey has a solid shutdown game but what has stood out in his play has been his rebounding game and ball use. Showed plenty during the u18 champs and throughout the season just how complete his game is. For mine the best key defender in this draft. Uses the as ball well any coming out of the back half and has elite footskills for a key defender and has the ability to use either foot to a very high level. Strong overhead and 1v1 can take marks. Reads it well and can get off his man to take the intercept mark and reads the game really well. Has the ability to go with a guy 1v1 and goes well in 1v1 marking contests. Endurance elite and tested superbly at the draft combine and can run with anyone as a key defender. Also has the ability to play forward and while I consider him more of a key defender this could also be a possibility if required.

Hrovat I just couldn't pass on. The guy is the next Sam Mitchell and can play from round one. Makes the VFL side better in the immediate and will push for games from season one through the midfield. With Ball and Swan both nearing 30 there is room for another strong bodied inside midfielder and Hrovat while not tall has the ability to add some serious grunt to a more finesse midfield with Pendlebury and Beams those star midfielders.

Clurey I just like too much to pass on. This early in the draft sometimes you just have to ignore needs and when you can get a quality KPP you take him. I'm absolutely convinced this guy makes the grade. If required he can play as a key forward until Darcy Moore comes along in a couple of years but I like the insurance with Tarrant retired, then Keeffe coming off a knee injury. Nathan Brown has had his share of serious injuries so Clurey short term is strong insurance and I wouldn't be at all surprised with a couple of seasons in him to see him pass Nathan Brown by and find a permanent position in our best side.
