Based on the first NAB cup game and the club desires which "new" players would the club be likely to play-

The big O because they have to due to other injuries
Smedts to un-tap his potential
Motlop for X factor

Must keep trying Walker or Battie because we will need a tall backman during the season. Both offer heaps.

Can Battie ruck also?

Re: Nab cup upgrades

We need to see more of Walker, Bathie and Burbury, out of those three.

Re: Nab cup upgrades

Walker impressed me the most, seemed pretty composed, and found the ball fairly easily.

Re: Nab cup upgrades

Was interesting listening to Chris Scott's press conference he said that Big O still had a fair way to go to secure round 1 position.

Any chance of getting a link to that presser Chaos.

Orren will mature into a serviceable player, but no game-breaker. Walker also. Not there yet but loads of potential. Motlop, Smedts and Bathie excite me.
Duncan, Brown, Hogan must take a step up. There's a lot of competition for their spots emerging.

This is what he said;
Cats coach Chris Scott was happy with Stephenson's performances against the Swans and Cats.

"On the evidence of tonight, he looks capable of holding down a position in the ruck for at least half a game against reasonable opposition," Scott said on Friday night.

"He couldn't take massive steps forwards tonight, but I think he took a few small steps forward."

As for whether Stephenson is ready to be thrown into the fray against Fremantle giant Aaron Sandilands, Scott said, "Gee, that's a big step.

"But it's possible. He's a long way from being a certainty for round one, but he is a chance."

He's just doing what he does every week which is talking about the mantra of the young guys (I know Orren's not young but he's still one of them in the sense of being a new player) earning games on merit, therefore he wants Orren to focus on performing well next week rather than saying any new player is locked in for round 1 (and I agree with him speaking that way in his presser). The chances we take on Sandilands with only one ruckman are somewhere between buckley's and none, so we all know it's 99.99 % likely Orren will be there.

Back to the question, Orren will debut, I think Walker's a real chance to be elevated at some stage, possibly even round 1. Bathie could do the same thing if Gillies doesn't progress throughout the NAB as no doubt they'll want to rotate the tall defenders throughout the year, and we've got guys like Vardy and Menzel who could be put on the LTI if they want to bring either of them up.

I also think GHS will debut at some stage this year, Smedts will debut early on, and lastly Murdoch as my smokey for a debut this year.

Re: Nab cup upgrades

Walker looks like he will be eating defenders for breakky before we know it

As one poster put it,"he reminds me of a young Wayne Carey"

From what I saw of him, he's got all the makings of a monster power forward.
His Grandfather Peter was a hard straight ahead defender, and he appears to have that same strong attack on the ball as his grandad had.

If he steps it up a notch next week, I think they'd be making a mistake if they ignored the massive potential and upside the kid has, if he's not elevated.

Having watched Playfair, McCarthy, Spencer, and the smaller hope, Gardiner, over the past number of years, I thought we did well to turn Mooney into a grunt hard working big body at the top of the fifty.

Walker has shown so much more in just one game.

Boy, won't the competition be really pissed if we get that hard working, big grab forward NOW!!! If Walker can back this one up he has to be elevated and then put on the main list.

Also got to a lot of contests which suggests his fitness hype is on the money and knows how to find it. Just loved his aggression as well as his agility and skills for a big bloke.

Re: Nab cup upgrades

No. Only played a few minutes though. Led out and took one grab on a lead and then shanked the kick horribly from 45m out.

If people get stuck into Hawkins for not one grabbing marks, the Walker love won't last very long.

This is not really true. All those players had games when they showed potential.

Playfair especially but the others too (exc Spencer who was hopeless). Playfair was looking like making it untill that sorry business with the broken jaw.

There is a big difference between showing some potential as a young forward and making it as a regular. It is the hardest position in the League to make it.

Definitely a promising debut but has a way to go before getting a senior game let alone kicking goals in the seniors like all the above did.

Stephenson and Smedts are certainties to debut at some stage and it's a good chance that both will do so in round 1. Horlin-Smith will probably get a chance at some stage. Murdoch, Bathie and Walker probably all have the ability to win a senior place at some stage, but it all depends on the opportunities they get, as they have a few ahead of them. Kersten is also a chance. So that probably means around 5-6 debuts, which would be a good result, considering where we expect to finish on the ladder.

All those players bar Spencer got games in a side that had no one to keep them out. Ben Graham had to be moved forward in the end to give us a competitive CHF. Playfair was the best of them i agree and he did play some serviceable games before breaking his jaw.

I argue though that if you get as many games as Gardiner and Playfair and McCarthy got you will put in a few good ones.

The thing about Walker that struck me watching the replay was how hard he runs. This is true CHF behaviour. McCarthy couldn't quite figure it out and Gardiner panicked when he got it. I couldn't say Playfair ever struck me as being mobile.

You are quite correct saying Walker has a long way to go - first he has to usurp Hawkins or Pods (or Brown assuming he develops) and West looks like he might be useful resting up forward. BUT what Walker showed last weekend was very very good and I am happy to make the call that injury free he will play a large number of games in the seniors.

Yeah , I think we will plan to debut around 5-6 - one thing about our list profile that has struck me is we have 17 who are yet to play a game. That is an amazing stat for the reigning Premier.
FWIW Stephenson , Smedts , GHS, Walker and Shroeder are pretty certain IMO with Burbury and Kersten a chance depending on circumstances. Exciting times ahead.
