What's the future for ruckmen?

With the combination of the changes to the interchange, capped rotations, free agency, and reduction in the size of the rookie list, I can envisage the following may well occur:
- clubs will hold less rucks on their list in general
- only the absolute standout rucks will get picked up out of u18's (in theory, this may actually INCREASE the value of the standout junior rucks, not devalue them)
- clubs will chase a ready made option via F/A when they need one
- more rucks will miss out on getting drafted straight out of the u18's and instead head to the state leagues to develop, rather than being given half a dozen years on an AFL list/rookie list to come good
- clubs that nab the good junior rucks are taking a higher risk/higher reward route (on the basis that clubs going via F/A will find it harder to poach a #1 ruck)

That's my general logic/theory... and all that said, I will be spitting chips if Grundy doesn't go top 9. It won't simply be like "Tambling over Buddy?", or "Watts over NicNat?"... There will be half a dozen clubs looking very silly a few years down the track... Grundy had Longer covered last year as a 17 year old, and Longer's form was so good in the reserves this year he demanded selection. Sure, he didn't dominate at AFL level, but Grundy is a once in a decade opportunity, and as others have said, the chance is there to have our ruck division sorted for the next decade.

To me, like Martin_Riewoldt at stages this year he has been number one on the board. The more I see of him, the more I want to place him there again. Two weeks till the draft, I have lined up extensive tape watching. My final mock draft I may post here will be the day before I fly to the Gold Coast for the draft.

Now, what is the value of having a ruckman who can play forward? How about having two of them?

With the new interchange system being two and two (this will come in) you want players out on the ground who can play multiple positions.

Cotchin, Martin, Deledio, Vickery, Grundy straight away you have 5 Elite talents who can stay on the park for a majority of time. Maric is another one who could go forward. I mean a set up of Riewoldt, Vickery and Grundy up forward with Maric rotating with Grundy and Vickery at different times to me would be frightening. You would leave Vickery forward unless a change up is desperate, but you have that option. No ruckman off the ground gives us a leg up. Especially when they are of the quality of Maric/Grundy and Vickery.

Very funny. Kid is projected as a third round pick. At 187cm & 86kg with sub 3sec 20m speed he could be that line breaking midfielder we're looking for.

I've actually wondered about this, if Grundy falls to Richmond, and IF Richmond pass on him, do Carlton with their 3 ruckmen take Grundy? He could fall to 12 or 13, which is crazy.

Backline is set.
Forward line is an absolute mess. We don't know which small midfielders too play, we don't have a legit power forward, only Jack.

Grundy could be played as a power forward, he's an animal.

i think griff could be the power fwd.

Although I don't agree with you in regards to Grundy being a better junior than Vickery , I do think Krueser was a better junior than all of them . The job of a recruiter isn't solely to judge upon who is the better junior but more so rate players upon there potential to become a AFL footballer .
That is the reason you might find is why some may question Grundy's , worth more so than others . Many have a varying opinion as to his potential at AFL level .

just a side note wayne hughes said if he couldve he would have picked nic nat in the kreuzer draft no1.

Both next year Rusty. Taylor would want to grow a bit but he's talented and IMO Dunstan would be in the running for a top 10 pick at this ridiculously early stage unless Adelaide get in his ear to run sub 10 beep tests.

I'd take Kennedy before Hrovat. Currently Hrovat is a much better inside player, but does not possess even the nearest ounce of the outside game that Kennedy has. Kennedy also has elite pace and that's something Hrovat will never have. Kennedy is also the best small forward of this pool too. Kennedy is far too versatile and athletically gifted to pass on.



I love Aish, I see an elite player immediately. I'm not sold on Boyd yet, I know his coach too, he reckons he is too slow. Billings has incredible football smarts. It's as though he was born to be an AFL footballer. I think he's that talented that at worst he'll be as good as Chapman.

As I've said a few times before, I have not been able to see much of the non-vic boys, but from what I've seen so far, I think Sheed will be an excellent player. He'll be one of those players who racks up 25 possessions a game, be a very damaging player. From what I've seen he's pretty good inside and out.

Unfortunately, I have not seen enough of Grescos to give a proper comment.

I think he'll go late National Draft. At his size I have questions over where he'd play at AFL level. He's a tough little competitor, which is fine at juniors but he's very thin through the shoulders so doubt he'll put on much weight and hence won't be able to play the same role at senior level. I think you've picked a ripper in Dunstan. Sheed is my first preference for next year. Played for WA at Champs, Boyd at 2 the VM KPF and then Dunstan for guys who may be available mid 1st round. inb4 someone howls me down because Knightmare has Boyd rated 1 for next year. I've heard he's seen as a mid 1st prospect currently.

The only legitimate threat between Richmond and Grundy (outside of GWS) would be Port Adelaide - who would pick either Menzel or Mayes IMO, but in saying that - I think he will fall to Pick #9.

FYI theflea: I took this as a personal prediction from C4. I'm not going to hold him to it or anything but I do think he went further than just posting what Quayle said
