My understanding is - They want him back in the team ASAP. In saying that, they will in no way 'fast track' his recovery. When he is back to full fitness and some decent form he will be in the team.

My thoughts exactly yotc. I reckon Duncan is already developing an inside game and Smedts has the potential, but there are no standouts amongst the prospect pool. McCarthy is another one who has the tools but is someway off yet.
Duncan is starting to take on a Bartel appearance for mine. He is actually pretty good above his head and is a great kick for goal.

He is modelling himself on Jim so I suspect he'll develop an inside game

Looking back, would love to pick up someone like Luke Parker who had an impact in his first year and already looks an entrenched part of the Swans 22 in his second season. That said for whatever reason guys like Parker and Bastinac tend to slide somewhat - guess recruiters like upside (a dirty, dirty word) more than runs on the board.
I remember having a lot of love for Bastinac, to the point I said to someone I know that I felt he was just as good as Scully but without the fanfare.

I think he has proved my point so far to date.

The talk about not being convinced on Boak has me stumped a bit though.

I get we are being smacked at the contested ball but we are also getting done on the spread...Boak would help here.

He has also been in the system as long as Selwood and can get his own ball if needed. First round pick or comp pick would get a deal done if he is out of contract.

Horlin-Smith & Schroder both look like they are made to be contested ball winners and let me throw up another out of left field - Shane Kersten.

Have a look at him and look at Ling - I see some similar traits. The main issue is the tank.

If Walker does get elevated, and I hope he does, the forward line is getting crowded (Hawkins, Brown, Walker, Menzel). Kersten may need another bow. Midfield could be it.

Like the Kersten / Ling comparison.

Whats his speed like?

Walker strikes me as a swingman - kind of like what Hurley is to the Bombers.

Would make a great attacking defender with the aerial skills of a forward almost like an in-form Brian Lake or even Harry Taylor.

Have been doing a little research on Troy Menzel.

Very similar to Daniel in the way he moves IMO.

At this stage he would be my first realistic priority come draft day.. that being said it's only May.

Excellent question and one I don't have an answer for since I haven't really seen that much of him. But what I have seen suggests he is reasonable off the mark.

For longish bursts...no idea.

Couldn't be slower than Ling though could he? ;)

I sincerely doubt that he would be around come our pick.
Still it would be a nice brother combo.

Why? It's obviously hard to say pre-Champs but I've yet to see an assessment that considers him Top 10...in which case there's every chance he could slide to us.

Depends whether our first pick ends up being in the 20's or not. It's also hard to predict exactly where he'll go because of the LARS, given the high re-failure rate we have seen so far some clubs may be reluctant to take him in the first round, although I tend to think on pure talent he is mid to late first round.

No doubt we would be interested if he's around at our pick.

Do you think there is any interest in Travis Tuck?

Playing some decent footy @ Werribee
Interest from us or in general?

Us - I doubt it.

Others - it's possible.

It would be interesting to watch the Hawk board go into meltdown if another "Hawthorn" name ended up elsewhere and started tearing it up a'la Kennedy.

I had a run through our list and I'm actually having trouble making space for the mandatory 3 picks...I think this may, in part, be why we didn't activate the compo pick this year. It may have meant delisting more than we wanted to.

Corey - may retire
Scarlett - may retire
Chapman - may retire
Wojcinski - may retire

No certainties there at the moment. Scarlett seems most likely since he has gone on record that this is his last year but I think he has one more left in him.

Byrnes & Hogan probably in the gun.

Cowan - might just be too many of his ilk at the Cattery.

Knowing we have Walker rookied do we dangle Mitch Brown for a pick and then look to elevate Walker?

Or do we shop Walker around and see if there are any nibbles?

If Boak does happen to leave Port and nominates us we might have to do something a little radical to make it happen.

On Tuck, I doubt it. He's been good, but not super. If you're talking ex afl guys I would think Cook and Cockie over at Sandy are playing very well and would be more likely to go. I agree with Pivo though, doubt we would look at Tuck.

I agree on the list changes, it will be tight. Let's assume we have to elevate 2 rookies (reasonable bet given Stringer and Simpkin have already debuted and Walker is pushing from below) then we need to find 5 spots, maybe more if we want to bring a player in (e.g. Boak).

Byrnes and Hogan are in the gun, no doubt, unless both are in the 22 come the finals, they are probably going to go. Someone may take Byrnes which would give us a FA compo pick.

I tend to think Scarlett and Wojo will retire, so there's 4 changes I am fairly solid on. Beyond that it gets really hard.

Corey is contracted, and if the club has front loaded this year's cap (a reasonable assumption if they were planning to chase a player this year) they may not be able to pay it out without breaching the cap, so he is unlikely to go.

Chap maybe might retire. I think Boris, Josh and Pods all have more good footy in them.

A lot depends on the end to our year, if we win the flag I suspect a few who have got more in the tank will retire anyway, likewise if we bomb out and miss the 8. If we are in between it becomes harder to predict.

I think Gillies is no certainty to be here next year, despite our shortage of key defenders he needs a good year to guarantee himself another contract.

Cowan would be unlucky as he had a very good year last year and I tend to think if he is back from his injury soon he will play well and get another contract.

Brown is relevant. No chance he will be delisted, too much talent, however if Walker pushes up onto the main list he may get itchy feet-although I think the club has been right to take the slow track with him, but I can see other melb clubs getting in his manager's ear and offering him more gametime. But he'll be here unless he requests a trade, we won't look to move him. Unless we got a pick inside 15 I wouldn't move him and even then I would only do it if it was at his behest. The kid has so so much talent if his body holds together (which is a real risk I admit).

I would not shop Walker around, apart from the family thing he is what we need, and is afl standard IMO. However it would be interesting to know whether the club consider him or Brown potential key defenders or forwards only? This affects not only our ability to give them (and Kersten) gametime but also down back-what is the contingency plan if Scarlett retires and Gillies either doesn't cut the mustard or seeks a trade again?

I tend to think we'll look for midfielders and a key defender in the draft this year.

I think we can get Boak done (if he wants to come) with the compo pick and other pick swaps without having to move a player (either to Port or a third club) but you never know, depends how reasonable they are to deal with and how much we rate Boak.

Agree Pure

Tuck? I wonder if Richmond is interested.

How many picks? If we elevate Stringer &/or Walker , it means we need only picks 1 or 2 but id say we will use more than that especially if we bring Bourke in.

My guess : 4 spots min.

Think Hogan will go. Byrnes & Gillies could look at options

If JCorey is sound he will play on. Perhaps under extreme circumstances we may twist his arm to become a mid coach but we a re-becoming a young side. We will not /should not do a Melb. we should trad very carefully with our Premiership heros.

Scarlett may decide to go but he may not either.

Wojo may get pushed out but if he was fit he may stay , i think it would depend on unexpected player movement.

Chappy? Will any name players chase a money deal? Probably not but as I have said before I were GWS i would go hard at Chappy. He's done everything will always be a Geelong Champ , he has seen Geelong handle Ablett with class and he would be good for GWS for a couple of years off and on ,Sheedy would love him. Who could blame him if he gos for a Golden handshake deal. But no push , only if he asks for it.

If our Rookies are that good that we feel we must elevate , and we pick up FA's or Boak types , guys like Cowan may be pushed.

There always seem to be someone that goes that is inconvenient or out of our control. If someone like West etc departed it would change our plans.

As much as I hate to admit it, cause I love him, I think Stokes might be another who might be looking over his shoulder a bit.

It is a good position to be in but also a tricky one and some boys are going to be very unlucky.

I would possibly agree, except for the fact that he is contracted (signed for 2 years at the end of last year). Although I suppose a trade is always a possibility. (but I would be surprised to see both Byrnes and Stokes go in the one year).

I left Stokes out as he seems to be a player thought off as best 22 but really he should be included.

Has been best 22 this year , not in my opinion and as ive said many times a player of his age should be helping out in the middle not just being a forward pocket. OK , if you are Milne or someone who really contributes to the score like but Stokes is not a regular main goal kicker.

He is a player who I would be tempted to deal on. In fact the game tomorrow will be interesting with two player debuting who could be in line for his position.
If Schroder/McCarthy comes in and goes hard and kicks goals....

Agree with all you guys have said - for me I think Scarlett, Wojo and at least one of Corey or Chapman will retire at years end. As P_O said if we win the flag they all may feel the desire to go out on a high. It would be fitting and signal the end of a great era.

Surely Hogan and Byrnes are gone. Both have been overtaken by much younger players this year at the selection table. I think it was damning for Byrnes this week that 2 kids who really haven't had pressing claims were chosen ahead of him. Hogan would have to have a terrific second half of the season to have any chance of remaining on the list.

It think Stokes will stay. We can't cull all the guys that are in the middle aged bracket - we hardly have any of them as it is!

Gillies will definitely stay if Scarlett retires. I get the feeling the club internally rate him a fair bit higher than those of us on BigFooty! I wonder where Bathie will end up next year too?

Walker and Stringer would be upgrade certainties you would think. We certainly can't afford to let Walker go not knowing whether Brown is going to "make it". I'm not sure that Walker is the messiah that some here seem to think he may be but the kid does have some talent. Personally I'm praying that Vardy makes it back and becomes that guy who can play ruck or KPF.

I've warmed more and more to us getting Boak. Not sure that it will happen but I think he would provide that outside speed that we seem to be currently missing - more pronounced atm in Varcoe's absence.

I see the club going the same way as P_O suggested in the draft - mids and a tall defender. We need an inside mid to assist Selwood and Christensen down the track but also need more run and speed from our young midfield group. I'm not sure we get that with Horlin-Smith, Schroeder and Guthrie.

Clearly a bit depends on who & how many pull the pin at year's end.

As for Gillies, I'm in no doubt he is rated internally and is seen as Scarlett's replacement.

Emergency after being out injured. They are trying to get as much time into him as possible this year.

Personally I think he goes alright. He reminds me of a young Lake at times. Certainly keeps it interesting down back. lol

I also have a sneaking suspicion that there has been a pact about guys staggering their departures so as to not allow the club to bottom out.

YOTC , the only thing is that keeping Stokes just cause he is the age group we need is a false positive. We need that age in the middle , getting , driving the ball. To me he plays a position that an entry level player uses to get in the side.

And just to add , if we could add another kid like Christensen , I wouldn't worry that he is too young. We need to add guys who play like guys 22-25 , just like Selwood when he started or we need to add guys who will eventually true mids.
Although ungettable a Caddy or a Treloar would be a coup to pinch one back from the newbies

If we somehow managed to orchestrate deals that landed both Boak and Caddy or Treloar I suspect I would be walking around with a year long hard-on.

Crazy thing is, we are in a position that could see us have a crack if we were prepared to deal some of the young guys.

Problem I have is, who would I use to make it happen.

Of the ones I know it would take, I'm not prepared to pull the trigger even though I rate both Caddy and Treloar.

Just a pipe dream really Piv , not really our thing is it. We sort of play by - we don't go after yours , so don't go after ours.

Pure , mentioned MBrown. I was looking at the u18 champs sides and there is Jordon Bourke named at FF , I just wonder if we know he is coming our way would we really need , Bourke , Kirsten, Walker , Vardy , West , Hawkins and MBrown?

Brown is quality and I suspect he will be late bloomer like West , by the time he gets to 24/25 he will become a quality player but I think another a quality mid my be more beneficial to our list.

It is fair to say that we believe we can find quality kids and then develop them. Good thing is, I suspect now most on our list wouldn't want to leave even if they could get more money.

There will always be exceptions but the culture is good down there these days. I'd love to know how many players at opposition clubs have thought "I'd love to get down to Geelong".

I have a feeling there would be more nowadays than 10-15 years ago.

But I have a feeling (and don't hang me if I wrong) that both Boak and Bourke will be at the Cattery next year.

And the Bourke one makes life interesting.

If we trade our first round pick to Port for Boak, is our first live pick (possibly 2nd or 3rd round after trading) acceptable to counter any bids for other clubs?

Father son bidding occurs directly prior to the start of trade week (however long it goes for now I'm still calling it that) so we'll know what pick we are spending on Bourke before we deal for Boak or anyone else etc.
