Welcome to my team analysis for the upcoming 2012 season. In this series I will be analysing each team´s rank within the AFL in terms of weight, height, age and games played. I will also go a step further to break down the analysis between defense, midfield, attack and ruck.

So lets kick off the season by going in depth in to each team´s weight analysis.

Weight-per-Club-e1332277186411.png

In each position we are no worse than 7th position (defense) and our highest ranking is 3rd in the midfield and overall it gives us a ranking of 2 in the AFL!

This shows that our list is one of the strongest in the AFL which may be surprising to some! Lets have a look at the breakdown by position.

Avg-Weight-Defense-e1332278296642.png

Heaviest-Defender-e1332278342363.png

Our heaviest players are our two rookies, Wright and Darrou. They are followed by Rance and Post.

In the weight to height ratio that I have come up with (weight less height + 100) this calculates a player´s body mass with a score of zero being an acceptable AFL level.

At the top of the list was as Wright (+8), Darrou (+7) and Houli(+4). They are followed by 6 players who are on level terms (0) which means that we have a decent weight in defense without being overly strong which is evident by our 7th ranking.

Heaviest-Mid-e1332278451436.png

The heaviest player is Tuck followed by Jackson and Arnot.

In the weight to height ratio Arnot leads the way (+7) followed equally by Tuck, Jackson and Foley (+3) and White on (+2). Martin and Cotchin are on -1. Our midfield is physically strong within the AFL due to our depth in this department.

Avg-Weight-Fwds-e1332278509617.png

Heaviest-Fwds-e1332278563622.png

The heaviest player is Griffiths followed by Miller, Vickery and Riewoldt.

In the weight to height ratio King leads the way (+4) followed by Miller and MacDonald (+2) and Maric and Griffiths (0). Riewoldt has a score of -2 and Vickery -5.

Our starting forwards are decent but Vickery needs to beef up.

Avg-Weight-Rucks-e1332278621266.png

Heaviest-Rucks-e1332278664287.png

Graham is the heaviest followed by Browne and Maric.

In the weight to height ratio the ranking Graham leads the way (+5 ) followed by Browne and Maric (+2).
Overall our ruck depth is excellent.

I like your analysis and what you're doing, but without being too criticial, those stats and graphs as usual don't show the full story.

Consider this:

Richmond's "heaviest" in each department stack up very well. However, you have to look at who those players are, compared to who they are at other clubs and then it shows that perhaps we are still undersized.

Examples:
Defender weights, other clubs have Lake, Merret, Carlisle, Reid, Rutten, Grundy etc listed. Basically their clubs best defenders. We have Piva Wright, a first year rookie who probably won't play a senior game this year, just happens to be heavy. Replace it with a guy who actually plays and our heaviest is Rance at 93kgs, 11kg lighter than the other monster full backs.

Midfielder weights: Tuck's a beast, and he gets a game, no problem here, though we do still have a few undersized guys running around.

Forwards: Again, you've listed a guy who can't get on the park. The most relevant player as our heaviest forward would be Miller at 96kg. A rookie, who still sits 12kg off the top.

Rucks:
Angus Graham is listed, who comes in impressively at 106kg, as does Browne, an impressive 105kg. The only thing is, they aren't any good. Our actual gameday rucks weigh in at 102, 100 and 95 kg respectively. That's 20kg below Sandilands and a good 3-4kgs below most of the other premier rucks.

Add to that the fact our averages are boosted by the recent recruitment of a few "man childs" and our match day averages don't necessarily look so impressive.

Again, not having a go at you, just offering a little deeper insight.

Brilliant work mate. Great to see us with a bulked up list for once and not the lightweights of the recent past.

Also I piss myself when I think about how Essendon have done nothing but brag that they have have bulked up over the break and they are still built like a bunch of cheerleaders.

I didn't realise Tucky was such a big boy?

Wow everyone is into the graphs and shit now. I wonder if its the kid from the ad that takes his dad's shitty graph and turns it into a 3d extravaganza. ;)

Juss,

You are spot on with your analysis and what my graphs do is just that, stimulate conversation. I can go in depth and write for ages and dissect each player but I let the graphs do the showing and others do the talking.

Thanks for your reply!

Yep, just dissecting it a little further which as you said, is good for discussion.

We have no doubt improved in this area, and the graphs show that.

yep agree everything in context. i did a similar post this morning but it never went thru.
just on backs for example. what i would consider collingwoods regulkar back 6 their average weight is 93.8kg. their running backs weigh 92 86 and 89 kg respectively. their third tall in maxwell weighs 93kg. they have two kpds who weigh over 100kg. and they have an option to play tarrant 94kg back as well if hes needed.

geelongs regular back 6 weigh 91kg on average. ours well it weighs 86.1 bloody hell gcs regular back 6 weighs on average 87kg.

everything you wrote is correct i wish i could phrase it as well. to be honest to determine if players are a good size you generally havee to look at the height to weight ratio also the way people are built. an example is say josh hunt only 185cm sheesh i say only 185cm thats what 6ft 1 or 6ft 2 ish. but hes 104kg hes massive. if i was coaching him and he deviated of the line just once id hang draw and quarter him straight lines with the intent if anyone gets in the way they are going to get buried.
shannon hurn is another sheesh i wanted this bloke in 05 but at 186cm and what 98kg or close to it hes a wrecking machine in the making.

Interesting stats. i thought we were targetting lightweight fast running players that play a running game. ohh, that was in Wallaces' time.

But seriously (sort-of), adding Meat Loaf (the man) will get the average weight up, but little to do with providing a better strength to the team.
But i like the way that we are generally introducing players that have or will have the weight to provide a physical contest. But i'd say that in the mid-field we are still underdone, when you have Foley (yes height-weight ratio is good) Edwards and Nahas in there.
