So it's now the women's turn for their premier teams competition, the Federation Cup. Unlike the men, Australia is actually in it to win with it being part of the 8 teams involved with the World Group:

Czech Republic vs. Australia
Italy vs. USA
Russia vs. Japan
Serbia vs. Slovak Republic

Website: www.fedcup.com

You can find all the information on the teams for all ties on that website. As far as the Australian tie goes, we are a massive underdog against the defending champs the Czechs. The surface alone is going to be horrible for Sam, our no.1 player, indoor hard has never been her best surface and obivously why the Czechs choose it. Kvitova might be horrificly out of form (that AO loss to Robson was funny) but that doesn't mean the matchup doesn't suck for Sam. Sam hates plays lefties, Kvitova is one and so is Safarova, she hates playing flat hitters, Kvitova is one and Safarova is one. There is just no way I see us winning one singles let alone two. Gajdosova might be our chocie for the 2nd singles player but she is in awful form too. We might have the AO doubles pair finalists but it won't matter once we are down 4-0. I hope I turn out to be terribly wrong. Italy, Russia & Serbia would be favourite for the other ties.

TV Coverage of the Australian tie will be shown on Fox Sports. FS2 with coverage on Saturday night at 11pm and FS3 at 10pm on Sunday night. I'll be watching, look forward to a lot of disappointment and shanked forehands (from everyone)

Unfortunately agree with your assessment and can see us going down 5-0, since they have a very strong doubles pairing in Hlavackova/Hradecka. This tie is really difficult to predict but unfortunately the odds are well and truly against us.

Let's hope that the girls can get up.

With the form the the Czech players are in. I cn actually see us going close here.
Problem is that both players are horror matchups for Sam regardless of their form (and indoor hard is a bad surface for her), and we really don't have a decent option for the second singles player right now going by current form. I hope we can, but right now I just can't see it.

Can't see Stosur beating Kvitova, or Gajdosova winning a rubber but Stosur-Safarova and the doubles could go either way.

Yeah, tonight Kvitova vs. gajdosova and then Safarova vs. Stosur. Obivously we are praying that sam somehow gets a win and we're 1-1 heading into the final day

Its kind of funny, Jarka is the only one who's actually won a few matches out of all of them of late. I have to work at 6 AM tomorrow, contemplating whether or not to stay up...

Hopefully its not the huge shitfest that the form guide might suggest.

Also on a random note, but I read on the TA webstie or twitter than Molik did her speech at the dinner in Czech. Fair effort!

Kvitova upped her level a bit in the breaker, shame Jarka couldn't keep her break though. Also, is it just me or is Jarka really not terribly quick on the court?

Jarkka's not slow, the problem is that she's very slow to react to the ball being hit and to realise what direction/spin it has on it. Makes her look slower than she is.

Glad I went to bed after she choked her way out of a gimme first set. To be fair to her, it was a bad matchup for her - but she was far and away the better player in that first set and should've gone up 5-0 at one point. Just not good enough.

Me too. Neither of the Czech girls were at he top of their games either, that's why it's disappointing as 1-1 was a realistic scoreline. Goose is cooked

The sad part is we were a realistic chance to go up 2-0 given how the Czechs were playing; Gajdosova gave up her break points serving for the first set after having Kvitova on the ropes, and after that was never the same.
I can't see Jarkka touching Safarova if Lucie plays how she did last night, but Stosur's a chance against Kvitova (still unlikely though). I'm still skeptical Dellacqua/Barty can beat Hlavackova/Hradecka despite how well they played in the Aus Open, but we'll see. A win is almost out of the picture unfortunately.

I went to bed after Jarka's first set, fortunately it seems. Sam has a problem, does anyone remember when she was about 21 and used to do this all the time? Only thing was though it was all about Hewitt and even Molik so it wasn't a massive media focus. I guess Jarka is playing significantly better than last year though, although she still makes you tear your hair out. Hopefully they play Ash in the dead rubber.

So is the doubles on tonight as well? Or only if it is live?

I heard that they got rid of the dead rubber but they just said on tv they'll be playing if its dead. Looks like it will be a dead rubber since Sam is doing her usual losing from a match point up business.
