Considering pre-season has been going for literally one week I wouldn't be making such harsh judgements on these players in particular. This is their first full pre-season at AFL level. This time last year they were probably still on holidays after finishing up their state league seasons.

Not sure I agree. If they were only slightly behind then it would be ok. But they were consistently not even competitive. These guys were both in the system all last season - they know what to expect, and they know ( or should know) what is required to get up to standard. They are simply no where near where they should be.

Such complacent standards would not be tolerated in any other elite profession, why should they be at the MFC.

Being so judgmental this early is just ignorant. As dee64 said It'd be a worry at xmas. At this stage it'd just be thing to observe. Also, you're talking as if you have inside knowledge on them. If you do, I don't question you; but how can you say to delist them from just observing them on 3 occasions. I doubt you're privy to discussions between Roos, Misson and the players.

At this stage many players while doing group sessions are working to individual programs, if they are meeting their individual targets thats fine, if not I'm sure it will be raised with the individuals concerned.
I'm not privy as to where they may be at in regards to this and am confident any player returning below par will be dealt with appropriately by the appropriate people.
Far to many here would seem to want to sack players at the drop off a hat rather than work through these things with the individuals involved.
Not to concerned as both players have not done full pre seasons before and have four months to get up to speed.

I may be ignorant here but I'm sure both got a serious shock to the system by going to an afl team (even if it was us). Clisby especially had a shortend preseason. Both would have needed a massive shutdown over the off season. I'll save my judgement for after Xmas. In all honesty what is the worst case scenario? So these 2 guys who were shining lights in a shite team are behind the rest? We've picked up a few players who in all honesty should push these two out of the starting 22. I don't think it's panic stations yet.

Yep. Unlike others they haven't had the benefit of elite training for several years prior, as they'd have been working full time. Doesn't worry me at all, especially given that Matt Jones was one of our few players to consistently play his heart out this year. That says more about his work ethic compared to the rest of our list than his fitness base.

Mitch Clisby was hardly a shining light

Mitch Clisby was hardly a shining light
I thought he was a great find considering the players we've played over the last 3 years. At least wasn't intimidated by "afl level". He still gave it everything.

when Clisby came in he was able to provide some rebound and link up play out of defence, something that others tried during the year couldn't do consistently, for example Nicholson, Watts and Strauss. I think he can play a role as a small back, or at worst provide depth.

Straw man. You're presuming that there's complacency, and you're presuming that it's being tolerated.

I am not at all implying that complacent standards are being tolerated by the club. If you know anything about Roos record, one thing he does insist on is elite performance. All I am doing is feeding back to other posters my observations of how players are going so far in training (as a number have ask to get feedback from training). I would have thought it was relevant feedback if two senior players are struggling for no apparent reason, apart from lack of fitness (or talent for that matter - I rather suspect it is the latter). I have absolute confidence in Roos/Misson that if they continue to not meet standards (if that indeed is what they are doing), then that will be dealt with appropriately.

If you do not want this feedback, then don't read the post.

Oh it's far too early for panic stations. I'm sure both players are well aware of their position. It is obviously up to them and the club as to how it is dealt with, if indeed it needs to be.

Next year is going to be interesting. I'm interested in our new recruits such as Michie and Riley. Michie has only played one game yet there's a lot of optimism for him. Hopefully this is the beginning of having AFL standard players rather than exceptional vfl/sanfl/wafl types. :)rainbow:

From what I have seen at training, and he has been in the rehab group so it is difficult to assess, but Michie impresses me as a hard nut. Built a bit like Maloney, about the same size, but seems to be a hard trainer both from a stamina perspective and working on his skills.

I see Dom Tyson in the same mould, but has the outstanding skills of an elite player: terrific strong mark, very quick hands, rugged in close, an elite kick, and seems to be a leader on the park. He will be a beauty I reckon.

Interesting you consider them senior players when in effect they are both starting their first full pre seasons.
I appreciate all training reports however may have gone a little early calling for players to be terminated after a week of pre season running.

I would define everyone on our senior list (as opposed to Rookies) as senior players.

Oh yes, I am definitely not calling for anyone to be terminated, it is far too early in the season for that. All I am saying is, at the moment, they are not up to AFL standard in their fitness, and if this continues they do not justify their position on our list. That is not to say though they will not correct this over the next three months - I hope for all our sakes they do, and with the excellent coaching we now have available they most likely will.

I also said that it is not a good look coming back from holidays seemingly under-prepared for pre-season training, particularly when there is a new highly motivated set of coaches to impress.

Clisby could be a good role player, like Nick Smith - dare I say it?

Nick Smith is on a different level talent wise I think, but similar roles for sure! I'll sound like a broken record here but I still think Strauss needs to step up to this role though.
