Hope we take the gamble on Garlett. Is exactly what our team needs. If we can't get LeCras or Betts as free agents we will have a gaping hole in our forward line yet again if we continue to fail to draft a small forward. Petrenko does a good job and is reaching the fifty game mark but if we are to seriously challenge next year we will need a better forward line.

With free agency and the worry that the strong teams are going to get stronger, the weak teams weaker, could they add a bylaw that prevents players moving from a Bottom 8 club to a Top 8 club?

Players can still move from Top 8 to Top 8, or Top 8 to Bottom 8, or Bottom 8 to Bottom 8 but it just stops the "rats fleeing a sinking ship" situation that Melbourne are going through at the moment.

Yes, I know it is technically Bottom 10 but you get the point.

Sounds good in theory, can't imagine it was ever get put in. AFLPA would absolutely hate it.

It's not free agency now.

There are already restrictions on it eg the restricted period, plus having to wait 10 years.

in order to make things happen quickly

you could say that 1 club can only get a max of say 2 or only 2 can leave? get people to commit quickly.

It would suck balls if you did a 10 year sentence at a bottom club and then you were only allowed to move to another bottom club.

A rule like that would disadvantage players who peak late, whose value goes up in their late 20s like a lot of rucks, and who could otherwise move to clubs with a shot at a flag. Similarly, blokes from interstate who serve loyally at a club for years then want to go home in their late 20s for family, kids whatever. If their current club is at the bottom and their home clubs are in the 8 they're screwed.

Will have to see how it plays out I guess.

I reckon if Melbourne get robbed though over the next couple of years and lose Sylvia, Frawley, Garland, N Jones, Davey... and whoever else is eligible it will be looked at.

I think if Melbourne get robbed in FA, they will get over the top compensation. It would be seen as a good opportunity for the AFL to give them a leg up IMO.

I reckon that's what will happen. Sounds better than giving them priority picks, and they'll have some overly complicated formula to justify Sylvia being worth a 1st and 2nd round pick or something silly like that.

How do you propose we get him? If he has reformed, then he'll be long gone by the time we enter the draft (around pick #50 overall). If he's not reformed, then no club is going to go near him - particularly after his antics before the Rookie Draft last year.

I doubt it. The problem is that their development of these players has been so poor that their value has suffered - and hence the compensation they get for them will (or should be) fairly minimal.

You mean 66 gamer Petrenko?

Our forward line next year gets better with Walker in it.

Hey guys. Sorry for intruding. Read in one of the posts, that one supporter suggested trading Mckernan. I guess he hasn't been able to step up in regarding to Walker being out where as Kerredge and Lynch have. Saw a second rounder being mention. Dogs third rounder would be around pick 40. Dogs second rounder would be pick 22 or so.
Curious on you guys thoughts. Dogs lacking a second tall, even though Mckernan hasn't really showed much, but has been in and out of the side due to suspension and injuries, and from what else I have gathered has been trialled in forward, backline and 2nd ruck, but mainly groomed as a forward/ruck.

Hey guys sorry to intrude but when is Otten contracted til?

Our side need to bolster our young defensive stocks a bit for our future premiership tilt and would not mind someone like him...

Daniel Gorringe is someone we may be able to offload to you in exchange should you be keen to do so (although I understand you probably are not). Was pick 10 in 2010 and is an SA boy.

ideally we'd want a 2nd round pick for Smack and we'd package him up with our1st pick a 3rd rounder to get it, can see it as a distinct possibility come the end of the year. We'd of course be using that second rounder to get Dan Gorringe...

He re-signed in '11, but I don't think they officially announced the length of the contract. I reckon it would have been a 2 year deal though, so he'll probably be up at the end of the year.

Would he be someone Adelaide would look to offload in pursuit of Gorringe? Just remember we have no interest in picks later than the first round due to list constraints so would actually prefer to give picks to upgrade.

A lot will depend on what he does for the rest of the year. He has been serviceable since Tex went down and was, in the opinion of some people including me, very influential (without being dominant) in our comeback win against North. Having said that, he's never really put his stamp on a game and was omitted for last week's game due to weather conditions. He has a place in our 22 for at least the next month until Lewis Johnston returns from injury and, unless he really stinks it up, should stay in for the remainder of the season.

His performances over the next few months will determine his trade value. If I had to put a number on it right now I'd say somewhere between your 2nd and 3rd picks.

Gorringe is similar but the opposite to McKernan. Long term injury, opportunity knocks. Otten has been good this season but I get the feeling he's keeping Sam Shaw's spot warm. Having said that, there's no guarantee that Shaw will ever get his body right and Brent Reilly will (hopefully) not go around forever so Otten is a relatively important cog, whereas Gorringe would be back up to Jacobs from what I can tell.

Depending what Gorringe does for the rest of the year, and whether Shaw returns from injury, a straight swap or maybe a small sweetener one way or the other might do it.

Personally I'd be very interested in Gorringe. We need a genuine backup for Jacobs and in the long term someone who could perhaps surpass Jacobs. Gorringe also has the potential to be quite dangerous up forward too so could potentially work well in tandem with Jacobs considering I think we'll want to play both Walker and Jenkins as full time forwards.

It's difficult to assess Gorringes value, 3 years on from his draft is he still worth pick 10, or more to the point will he fetch something of that value? History says no, as I'm sure GC fans are aware with what happened with Caddy. Otten is a possible, he certainly isn't in that "untradeable" box, although I feel we'd require a sweetener. Apart from a long term partner for Thompson, is there anything else GC is needing. My feel, having kept a relatively close eye on GC since their inception having spent time on the GC, is that you guys probably need an inside mid or 2, an area where we certainly hold a surplus. Guys who could do the grunt work whilst the likes of Ablett, Bennell, O'Meara etc go about starring...

We wont be chasing any mids unfortunately mate. We got Jesse Lonergan for that very reason and he has already shown a lot to suggest he will be our Brad Sewell. Aside from that David Swallow is primarily an inside player and Dion Prestia is extremely good inside and out - will play where he is needed. We then have guys like K.Hunt as depth. O'Meara will never be purely an outside player either, has done a lot of grunt work this year. Danny Stanley is another who can play inside well.

I feel like young KPDs and rebounding defenders are where we lack at the moment. These needs are not dire by any stretch of the imagination either.

Gorringe's value is a hard one. Because he is a ruckman his value surely holds a lot longer as they do take longer. Not too mention his versatility. I would be happy with a pick in the 10-20 range or equivalent.

Fair enough re inside mids, wasn't sure but now you mention them probably not such a big deal to you.

Re Gorringe whilst I think you'd probably deserve a pick between 10-20, you'll probably have to end up settling for a pick in the 20s unless he can show something special during the remainder of this year.

Yeah possibly. I think ruckmen value are hard to grasp. Its very much subject to the demand of the market and desperation of club trying to get said player (see Tom Hickey for Pick 13 to Saints).

Well - Hickey and 26 for 13 and 37. Which I guess makes Hickey worth about pick 24?

Not bad for someone who was plucked from nowhere via zone selection. I shouldnt have been so vague about it lol apologies. One would argue more like pick 20 though :P

Speaking of Hickey, is he always as bad as he was against us? Getting anything more than a lukewarm pie for him is a win on that performance.

It's going to depend on what GC want to do and what they're happy to accept for Gorringe, will a 2nd rounder we can maybe russell up at the beginning of trade week be enough or do players get involved like does an Otten straight swap satisfy both clubs, after that it gets messy like the Crows trying to stooge the Suns by only offering a fringe player & pick, GC then not letting him go, Pre-Season draft then gets mentioned... doubt it will turn into that long saga though.

Still though I reckon a lot of it might depend or be compared to what happens with Polec (pick #5 2010) at Brisbane definitely still believe he'll be off to Port for a possible 2nd rounder.
