So brown is gone, and I now assume lisle will be too and at least one of Bourke and Michael is dropped as a rookie it gives 3 places as straight swaps for bigs onto our list and retaining the same balance.

So first round pick obviously whoever is available 'brown replacement'

If someone falls to us in round 2 then get a kp otherwise I can see another trade for a stop gap with best case being an equivalent to recent season movers likes Dawes or Jesse White but maybe more probably another lisle, mcguane, Paine, or a Quentin lynch. (Sorry I know it's a draft thread)

Hammelman hopefully we can secure as a rookie(?) and develop him. But from all reports Hammelman is better than freeman who was bid on.

Have to wonder whether staker will retire which gives another 'tall' spot on the list too.

If you want to sell the farm for a key forward what would you do?
I wouldn't sell the farm. I'd find an alternative to trading Rocky or Aish & pick 2. Both ideas are absurd, I would much rather draft Wright or McCartin than ever considering those trades for Hogan/Patton.

I'm beginning to hope we trade out our first pick for 2 first rounders and go midfielders with those. We have a few gems hidden away in our academy that might surprise a few in the coming years. Would rather two potentially A graders over 1 potential A grader. It won't matter who we have up forward if our mids are getting smashed every second week. We need class and a line breaking midfielder before we can straighten up our spine.

I understand your thinking but we would be laughed at if traded we traded away a prospective pick one for two picks in the teens (most prob). As much as I want the 'potential' to be fruitful that's all it is at the moment.

Just over the last week I started thinking more seriously about this question. I'm still leaning towards wanting us to take the high pick, but the last couple of weeks have made me feel like I may have underestimated our need for a few more high end mids.

I'm sure we won't do it, because it seems to be pretty well established that dominant KPFs nearly always go early in the draft if they aren't F/Ss. That said, we're obviously pretty keen on Close and will potentially get Hammelmann fairly cheaply. I have no sense of whether he is promising enough to build a forward line around, but if he was it would be a bit tempting.

Probably more a discussion for the trade thread but I'd think seriously about a 2 for 1 deal. It would need to be for the right picks. I reckon a top 3 pick would be worth something like picks 6 and 12.

I am very concerned about our midfield. Obviously, key forward is the gaping hole but I'm not sure we've got the quality/depth coming through the midfield ranks. When you look at a side like Sydney, they've got probably a dozen blokes who'd be close to a first string midfielder in our side. I think we need one, maybe two, genuine midfield prospects - not wingman, flankers and project types but genuine ball finding mids who can run all day and not butcher the footy.

I reckon we are a much better chance of getting a very good midfielder in free agency in the next couple of years than a very good forward.

Would be very reluctant to trade away our chance to draft a quality key tall as a result.

Trading for picks is a lottery.

So is the draft itself.

In fact, you could argue that trading down slightly and getting two picks actually spreads your risk a bit.

FWIW though, I'm not advocating for a trade. I just reckon the club should listen to offers. As I said on the trade thread, I'd be more interested in a pick plus player scenario.

Possibly although the history of free agency seems to suggest that the very good players tend to gravitate towards the very good clubs. You wouldn't want to rely on that avenue to bring in the quality you need.

I'm not sure you necessarily lose the chance. MOre you reduce the chance, depending on the vagaries of the draft.

Or the clubs that make them rich. I agree that the sexier clubs have an advantage in free agency, but we are still operating off a pretty limited sample size of examples. I am not willing to discount the possibility that the planets can still align and that someone from another club will hear the call (and the cash register) and potentially see the advantage in a less complicated and more anonymous life as a footballer in Brisbane. With more good midfielders than good forwards out there, I think the chances are higher.

Of course we should listen to any offers though, we would be stupid not to, but they'd have to be good ones. Clubs aren't going to make offers to us where they don't think they're getting a good deal themselves.

I guess this is the question though: how highly do we rate Hammelmann, who is a fairly well known quantity to us that we can likely get quite cheaply? I'm sure we rate Wright and McCartin as better prospects, but are they incrementally that much better than taking the slightly less prominent KPF and two other (potentially) very good prospects? I'm not necessarily keen on that option, but increasingly I feel like it may be worthy of consideration.
