This is my thinking at the moment.

We have one of the best forwards in the comp playing for us right now. Problem is they can't get it there. We need mids. We need gun mids. We need a midfielder to dominate and lead our midfield for the next ten years. Then we can start worrying about forwards.

IF Petracca is that midfielder then I think we get him. The next 6 weeks will be key.

Morton wasn't a "KPP" of any kind .

At draft time he was, he didn't put on any weight, Grant was the same, both 192cm.

A quick google

AFL Central

Pick #04 – Melbourne – Cale Morton – Claremont – Tall Forward
Spent a lot of time playing for his school, however had a fantastic championship. Really athletic for a tall bloke. May turn into a tall midfielder however he can go either forward or back. The demons would love some versatility in their team and Morton will be the perfect fit.

Matt Burgan

4 – MELBOURNE – CALE MORTON

Claremont, WA, Tall midfielder/forward, January 18 1990, 191.5cm, 78.7kg
Bio: A genuine utility, capable of playing onball, off a flank or as a key position forward.

AFL Insider

2 Richmond
Cale Morton

Tall Defender/Midfielder. 192cm, 75kg. Claremont

Point remains, all of the duds drafted top 5 were 192cm+ 'potential' KPP's ;)

There is more risk, at some reward.

Fair enough, but with those builds and being only 192cm I would be very surprised if there were too many clubs who were considering them for key position roles. Brodie Murdoch and Arryn Siposs for example were both playing FF just a year prior to being drafted and I'm pretty sure no-one was expecting them to play there in the AFL and while Grant and Morton were a touch taller, they were also rake thin and were still probably only looked at mainly for roles on the flanks, wings, or at best the "3rd tall" role.

Like I said though, I'm well aware of the strike rate of those taller types, hence saying it is possibly as low as 30% for those taken in the top 10, but there were plenty of relative "duds" who were under 192cm as well, unless you reckon the likes of Tambling, Fiora, X, Ellis, maybe even Ray and in more recent times, Scully and Trengove, have lived up to their very high pre-draft ratings.

Imagine that, that was amazing to hear they might be going after him last night! You'd have to give it to them for their bravery though, if they do pull him off after also landing Tippett and Buddy in the past two years. They're clearly not going to die wondering. They said last night that Frawley wants 7 years.

Veszpremi managed to get in a documentary.

How do we get our hands on Jayden Laverde. I like this kid and reckon he will be a star good size too
I know, he's awkwardly placed in between our first and second pick.
not good enough for pick 1, way too good to last until 2nd round.

Committed to Petrecca. Or more so; sorting our midfield out.

Petracca has stepped up in a big way this year, bolting into consideration to be the number one pick. This improvement is a sure sign that he will continue to develop when introduced into the AFL system and seemingly go from strength to strength, building upon his impressive year this year. Last years bolter was Bontempelli and Macrae the year before, and both look to be future stars of the game.

As for CP, he is a thoroughbred who can zip through packs with his elite agility and speed. Being a physical specimen combined with good footskills and footy smarts should see him transition into AFL easily enough, and eventually into a premier midfielder. Showed to be an inside-out mid (a big yes) who can put up big numbers and also has the ability to go up forward, take a grab and kick a goal. He is someone you build a midfield around.

The other reason is that he would pretty much sort our midfield out for the future. A midfield in the future consisting of two inside-outs in Petrecca and Steven along with the inside grunt of Weller and Dunstan and the class of Billings would be very tough to contain or match up against. Then you can add others who will be valuable contributers in Acres, Newnes, Savage, Ross, Templeton, Saunders and Murdoch etc. we will have a deep midfield with high top end talent.

And when building a premieship team having an elite midfield is an absolute non-negotiable. An elite midfield makes life easier for defenders and can also bring out the best in forwards. If we can bring in our star midfielder now and let our midfielders play 3 or 4 seasons together then it will allow them plenty of time to learn to play together and also for our coaching team to see any 'weakness' it may have and address it, by targeting specific players with a clear skill set as has been Hawthorn's model.

Could go as high as pick 3 depending on final ladder position and wont get past the Dogs pick IMO.

A few on here have said we were close to getting Melbs pick 2 last year however they favoured the GWS deal. If we are able to get hold of the Melbs first rounder or Frawley compo pick I and McCartin, Petracca and Brayshaw weren't avail I would pick him.

Why does the TAC cup have to have a bye round this week? I'm more interested in the results from those games than I am any AFL games this weekend.

It's fair to say that was Geelong's model. A team of elite mids who several like Stevie J, Chapman and the Coreys were used as wing men or forwards. They could then use less talented forwards like a young Tom Hawkins and JPod as make shift kpfs.

Roo only has 1 more year in him don't forget, I think any of Petracca, Wright or McCartin will work great for us though; we need gun mids and tall forwards

We just need more quality footballers, like we got with Billings, Dunstan, Acres & Templeton.

The way he played tonight youd think he might have a couple more in him.
Either way feels like hes gona leave a legacy at this club for a long long time.
Ive been thinking bout the other clubs round us. GWS wont take a forward, but more likely to take a defender than a mid. Brisbane n Melb will definately take best forward/ruck.
Im thinking petracca would land with us anyway even more definate if we finish 3rd last.

Melbourne want midfielders so they'd take Petracca if they finish below us (hopefully they don't so our pick doesn't get pushed back if they get a compo for Frawley.)

Thats right I forgot about that. Better hope they dont finish under us. However I doubt anyone would be crazy enough to offer frawls 7 years anyway. He could end up staying there.

Personal reasons I'm guessing. (aka Dickhead)

had a shocker playing for Perth today. should have been reported for kneeing hampson in the head.

barely got it until released as a spare man. when he did get a kick, turned his back to the play and held the ball up to the subi members

all he wants to do is hurt people. cant keep up. looks unfit. doesnt put in the effort defencively even though hes meant to be a s HBF/small defender
