If Rory Sloan or Dangerfield wanted to get out, and we could take them, and then we didn't, then we'd be idiots. Full on idiots. I fully recognise the plan, but the plan is in place because you simply cannot plan for these kind of opportunities. You have to assume that something like this just doesn't happen. If it DOES, then you take it, and run away laughing.

Would you have said the same about McEvoy last year? Obviously Steven is a more important and better player but with that would come a better deal. I'm quite happy to keep him, but if a fantastic offer came our way we'd be stupid to not consider it.

See I said the same thing. Why would you swap a young player that is close to elite for a pick so you can grab a player who may be elite. Unless you needed it to get Jeremy Cameron or some crazy trade that betters your position trading Steven for a high pick would be idiocy. We have had one good year out about 10 at the trade table and we are all drunk on success.

So who are we going to trade to get us the extra pick in the top 21 that Pelchen has said we are "committed to getting", if we don't downgrade pick 1?

Dangerfield? The All-Thread 18 looks quite good. Might be missing a half-back flanker.

HB: O'Rourke, Carlisle, O'Shea
C: Mitchell, Sloane, Whiley
HF: Parker, Cameron, Smith
FF: Hoskin-Elliot, Boyd, Dangerfield

The WTF/Facepalm XVIII is more fun;

After an inflammatory, and ultimately failed, mid-season attempt to poach Hawthorn's recruiting boss with a multimillion-dollar offer, Carlton now has a list of candidates from rival clubs – including wooden spooner St Kilda's polarising head of football, Chris Pelchen – for a new list manager's role.

carlton want to poach everyone. Hope he turns them down flat.

I'd be putting Armo on the table tbh.

so if we won't trade armo or steven, how do we get that 3rd pick within 21? either you must swap pick 1 or trade someone high up. there are very few players in our team that would be worth a round 1 pick.

there is montagna, for me he would be on the trade table for a first rounder if we could do it. i wouldn't trade armo or steven, need that age group badly.

So who are we going to trade to get us the extra pick in the top 21 that Pelchen has said we are "committed to getting", if we don't downgrade pick 1?

He managed to claim getting Billy Longer was kind of like getting a first round pick. I think those targets can be flexible or they claim they were talking next year. I would suggest they are trying to get a two for one deal with pick one still.

Except we still got 3 top 20 picks as well as Longer. I get the feeling Pelchen is a VERY goals driven individual and that he isn't one to compromise easily.

Candidate for a rookie spot?
Alex Carr, winner of the TAC Cups’ Morrish Medal for the best and fairest player for season 2014. Also finished second in the TAC Cup Coaches Award.

Cal Twomey writes "Carr, 19, polled in the final four rounds of the season to win the premier under-18 competition's best and fairest on 17 votes, three clear of Oakleigh Chargers half-forward Toby McLean.
Having missed his bottom-aged year in 2012 with injury, Carr was eligible last season for the draft but was overlooked. He returned to the Power this year as an over-aged player and averaged 24 disposals through the midfield. He ranked first in the competition for contested possessions and second for clearances."

Beaten in the Coaches Award by Oscar McDonald.
Wouldn't mind getting all three players, but maybe Carr as a rookie.

A profile from last year on Bound For Glory....

Alex Carr (Gippsland Power)
Height: 180 cm
Weight: 73 kg
Position: Midfielder/Forward
Player comparison: Andrew Walker
Strengths: Great kick, contested player, Strong tackling ability, versatility
Weaknesses: Decision making (occasionally)

Carr has one of the best kicks in the TAC Cup, and can be deadly from beyond the 50-meter arc if given the opportunity. His ability to run behind his teammates and get away from his opposition is a huge part of why he can be so dangerous as a player. One of Carr’s greatest strengths in his game is his ability to win the contested ball. He goes in hard at every contest.....

Although Carr’s offensive attack is a great asset for his game, but he is also a prolific tackler for Gippsland. He constantly is laying big tackles or bumps to stop his opponents run. This adds to his already highly talented offensive pressure that he applies when running forward with the ball. His forward pressure can lock the ball inside the Gippsland forward 50, giving them the best chance to score.
Another area that Carr is strong in is that he is able to play in different areas of the ground. He can play pure midfield, but then if needed, can go out onto a halfback flank, or wing to help the run for Gippsland. Carr’s good goal sense also comes in handy as he can stream forward from the back line and get the ball, and have a shot from 45 to 50 meters out, or be able to hit up one of Gippsland’s forward players.....His contested body and ability to hit the scoreboard would help add another dimension to the Gold Coast half forward line. Despite only being 180 cm, he plays a lot bigger and is the hard body so many clubs need.
Throughout this season, Alex Carr has shown that he has real potential at a high level. His second half of the season in particular has caught the eye of many and he has catapulted himself into draft contention. His booming kick and strong tackling and contested ability......would suit many teams in the AFL, most notably GWS for his contested game, and St Kilda or Richmond for his great kicking ability.

If Pelch was to ever leave, that'd be the end of that whole "Yabba told me to come save his Saints" thing, now wouldn't it?o_O

I like to believe it's true, so yeah, he's not going anywhere.

Surely it would be a downgrade on his current job. He's the man at StKilda. Carlton would just be a massive shitfight for him.

That's the whole bullshit about this "hip hip hooray we got the wooden spoon " vibe.
I tend to rate Dayne Beams(29) above Natinui ( 2 ) and way way above Watts.
Dustin Martin (3 ) better than anyone else in the top of the (crappy ) 2009 draft, but not as good as Nat Fyfe ( 20).
Swallow is a fine player, but is he that much better than Polec , or Issac Smith?
Patton. Did they draft best available or did they draft for needs. How can you even say if a good key forward is better than a good midfielder?
Bullshit? What about the fact that you're going to get much better trade offers for pick 1 than you are say pick 3 or 4? I would think that putting pick 1 on the table would open a lot of doors, especially in some years (which this year may or may not be, depending on whether someone wants someone like Petracca really badly).

What about the fact that you get pick 1 in the PSD as well, which not only gives you first crack at anyone that happens to slip through to there, but also gives you an extra bargaining edge/threat when going after anyone that is out of contract, as GWS did last year for instance and as we did so well when we last finished bottom?

What about the fact that you also get first crack at the rookie draft?

What about the fact that you also get first crack at every other round of all 3 drafts, which could make the difference between someone who you thought slid through to a pick like 21 who you desperately want being there by say your 2nd rounder or not?

I would have preferred for us to have won more games and been more competitive and had a lot less injuries and so-on, but lets not try to ignore the fact that finishing lower gives you a lot more advantages come trade and draft time, as it was of course set up to do, to help even up the comp.

Finishing bottom basically puts you in "pole position" when it comes to trading and drafting. Now of course in motor racing starting in pole certainly doesn't guarantee you a win and like you did above you could put up countless examples where someone has won a race from a position other than pole, but shit a brick, I would much rather be starting a race from pole than anywhere else on the grid and likewise when it comes purely to trading and the drafts, I would much prefer to be staring from their equivalent of "pole" than anywhere else, even though it doesn't guarantee you anything. It's a genuine advantage. Whether you take that advantage and use it wisely and well is up to you.

If Dangerfield or Sloane wanted to leave, I can't quite work out why they'd be hankering to join us. Hawthorn apparently have some ridiculous amount of money available, Collingood & Carlton don't even bother with the salary cap.
