I'd forgotten about McLaren - I'm a fan. More than happy to use a rookie pick on him.
I was disappointed that the past two years he had kept on getting shifted around
I actually think he looks very natural up forward, but can also play a bit through defense
I also don't mind Sam Bevan.
What do you like specifically about him? I saw him take a real good set shot from the pocket from a fair distance for an U18 player that went straight the middle, that definitely impressed me

Jack Cripps?

If we can grab the best available key position player (Eddy, Keitel, Hammelmann etc) and a young Ruck prospect (Kovac, Tagliablue etc) I will be very happy with the state of our list and where we are headed. Getting one more key position guy to develop and a young ruck that we desperately need to add to the list and this will be a great offseason.

Can we clarify first how many picks we will have in the rookie draft ?

Assuming that Pearce takes one of the spots and fingers crossed Goodes and Greenwood dont.

Does that leave us with 3 rookie picks or did I forget someone ? Simply have to go height.
I have zero faith in our height depth sitting behind a kid who has played 9 games of footy.

Pre draft I had my list in order as follows

Menadue, Vickers-Willis, R. Mckenzie, Lamb, Cockatoo, Maynard, Evans, D.Mckenzie, Daniel, Webb, Boekhorst, Gore, Drummond, Rainbow, Lonie, Keitel, Glenn, Touk Miller, Wigg.

We only took Daniel and Webb my 9th and 10th ranked. The only ones we couldn't have drafted were Boekhorst, Cockatoo and D.Mckenzie. Still available are Keitel, Glenn and Evans.

These were my prefered talls

R McKenzie , Keitel, Hammelmann, McDonald, Payne

Keitel, Hammelmann and Payne can be rookied.

I really like Evans but I think we will rookie KP talls and possibly a ruck. I'm now not sure we will retain Pearce, the guys we recruited possibly in his category. We seem well off for inside mids so I'm not sure Greenwood will stay either which is a shame as I like him.

So I think we'll Rookie at least 3 talls.

Again, who could we have taken with our picks (or even with our rookie picks) that will help us win games in 2015???

Yes, we will have 3 rookie picks plus pearce, and yes I would take at least 1 key position player (I like bevan as well). I wouldn't bother with a ruckman to be honest. Minson, campbell, cordy and roughead is enough IMO. We can pick one up next year.

Roughhead ?
Im a massive believer that he will never be a ruckman now.
With his shoulder issues we would be looking down the barrell of a Williams situation.
You dont put a guy with those shoulder issues in the ruck - the most testing position for a shoulder.

This board: We need to target talls in this rookie draft.

nek minnit

The Western Bulldogs select Alex Greenwood in the 2014 Rookie Draft.

I hope we go Pearce, Goodes (unpopular choice, but if Wallis has indeed gone down injured we will need some mature bodies for the midfield given who we lost this year), a development tall and a ruckman. Goodes will be on a one year contract which gives us a rookie pick next year as well. Just seems to be decent list management. I am not a fan of going 4 rookies all at once for a long time. Simply because it makes the rookie draft boring to watch for us the following year!

Lots of talls to choose from.

Of the smaller guys I liked the look of Capiron, Markov & Anderson.

I wouldn't mind taking a punt on Oleg Markov. Very athletic, but raw. Typical rookie.
I like Christian Bukyx-Smith and Michael Hartley as key defensive options. Tanner Smith I like too, bit puzzling Freo delisted him.
I don't mind Sam Bevan as well.
Adam Marcon, Josh Glenn and Kane Lambert I like as mature aged options.

Just a nice combination of a long kick and great movement. Perfect pairing for Tom Boyd.

Don't mind Cripps but I prefer the others I've mentioned.

I don't know a lot about Marcon but we're supposedly keen on him - what can you tell me about him?

what he is like in the forward line as far as chasing/applying forward pressure?

do you know athletically he is strongest at?

Very consistent inside/outside midfielder that has a bit of dash and is extremely hard working. He's not an increadibly damaging kick, but it's neat. Hits the scoreboard on regular occasions. Runs hard both ways, often has high tackle numbers. Had a very good finals series, almost willed Williamstown over the line against Box Hill to get in the Grand Final.
I think he could forge a similar career to that of Sam Dwyer (Collingwood). Won't be someone that will ever star, but he can just pick up the ball at will and play his role very well. Could play him across half forward and through the middle. At the very least he would be a very good depth player.

Sold.

How old is he? Does he have a big body?

Agree - he's often used as a "ruck cover" argument in the same thread as "he's a KPD" argument.
Nobody knows for sure where he will play next year.

And Brenton Payne. mature bodies like Evans, Bampton still avaliable

There's drafting cover/competition for spots; then there's going overboard. If we re-rookie Pearce, only to add another two-three genuine and 'modern' smalls then we've missed the point of the rookie draft as a tool for list development and balance.
Has the umbrella of Tom Boyd clouded our KP deficiencies? We've added one delisted, underdeveloped KP in Hamling, and injuries and ability aside, lost Tom Williams, Mark Austin and Tom Young. Roughead, Redpath, Roberts and their lack of friends won't have developed extensively from the end of last season. Drafting Lamberts, Marcons, Cains and other smalls that missed the ND will clog yesterdays draft result.

AFL Site: Top 10 Rookie Hopefuls:

Fancy any of these guys?

Peter Bampton (182cm, 83kg, midfielder): A ball-winner who has really solid frame, which means he could step into a club and play a role. Bampton averaged 19 touches in seven senior SANFL games for Norwood this year, having missed the under-18 championships with an ankle injury.

Daniel Capiron (189cm, 81kg, defender): Was overlooked after an inconsistent season where he struggled to find any continuity. But he has shown signs across two seasons of his ability to read the ball in the air, be a good intercept marker across half-back and offer rebound.

Will Fordham (188cm, 78kg, midfielder): Came on towards the end of the season, and a handful of clubs had interest in him late. Fordham played 20 games for the Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup and averaged 20 disposals. He carries strong athleticism, a bit of speed and is a nice size for clubs looking for midfield height.

Matt Hammelmann (197cm, 88kg, forward): He can join the Brisbane Lions under the pre-selection rookie rule as a member of their academy. Other clubs might take a look if they don't, as Hammelmann has shown signs he can be used at either end of the ground with success. Mainly it's as a forward, though, where he presents on the lead and kicks well.

Nick Jackson (195cm, 86kg, defender): Jackson is a tall defender who can shut down players, and tends to read the play well in the air. He played just one game at the mid-year carnival for Queensland through injury, but could be an option for a club looking for another young developing tall back.

Tyler Keitel (194cm, 86kg, forward/defender): Spent the season pushing back and forward, and showing he could play a role at either end. His athleticism is what might hold him back, but given his versatility a club might see something to work with.

Oleg Markov (186cm, 69kg, forward): Having broken his collarbone twice this year, Markov's limited exposure would have contributed to him not being drafted. A club might be better placed to take him on as a rookie, given his speed and athletic ability in the forward line and midfield.

Rowan Marshall (198cm, 87kg, ruckman): Marshall has played as a ruckman, but at his height clubs see him more as a tall forward at the next level who can also shift into defence. He was overlooked at last year's draft and returned to play some strong footy for Vic Country and the North Ballarat Rebels.

Braydon Preuss (205cm, 102kg, ruckman): The rookie draft is where recruiters will take more of a look at ruckmen, with Preuss on the radar of several clubs. The towering Quuenslander doesn't collect heaps of the ball but can present and offer a contest in the air, and has got some skill when competing at ball-ups.

Francis Watson (186cm, 76kg, defender): An agile, mobile defender who loves to run with the ball tucked under his arm. He has a great natural leap and is an instinctive player who improved immensely this season and has plenty of upside. Watson played four games for Western Australia at the national championships as an over-aged player.
