I'll add in this for you too, take a look at the Swans and their forward line :

Tippet - 201cm
Franklin - 198cm
Reid - 196cm

That is the benchmark right there so forget about playing someone around that 192-193cm mark in a key position role. Casboult at 199cm is the right frame (both height & weight), we need another of his ilk as a minimum.

i still take Fev at 193cm over Levi at 197cm any day

Like you said, weight is also important but you also need to consider athleticism and footballing ability. For instance, who would you prefer Tomlinson (193cm/92kg) or Jaksch (196cm/90kg)? I'd prefer Tomlinson who has proven that he can actually play and perform well at the highest level, versus Jaksch who looks like he lacks the all important element of competitiveness.

I think the way the game is going it is important to have a Tippett, Patton, Jenkins sized KPF but it's also important to have a balance. Two lumbering giants can become a liability.

Levi has locked down the big boy possie mate- I'd like to see a couple of Tomlinson types 192+ with speed and mobility running around forcing opposition to play man on man -

THAT is the winning formula btw - make defensive sides accountable and remove the loose man option..

Its important to have balance with KPF. Unless you have an extra 5 trillion dollars in your salary cap and can afford Tippet, Franklin and Reid, then you aren't going to find 3 big men over 195cm able to play within the same forward structure.

Casboult is proving he has what it takes to be the big get-out-of-jail forward we look to for contested marks. And Henderson has shown in the past that when he is fit he is more than capable of kicking 2-4 goals as a leading full forward. However, its hard to lead effectively whilst injured.

We're after a gut running Riewoldt type CHF. From what I've heard and seen of Tomlinson he fits this bill rather perfectly. And at 193cm his agility, endurance and pace of the mark is exactly what his job would be.

The idea of a leading medium forward sounds great as well (Membrey).

Exactly right !!

Two key forwards (big gorillas), two-midsized forwards (Tomlinson & Gunston sized) and two running athletic goal-kickers (Menzel) and there is no club in the competition capable of keeping them all quiet all of the time.

Height is important to an extent but when it comes down to a couple of cm between people leap, speed, weight, strength and the ability to meet the ball at the highest point are all more important.



Say a 199cm guy jumps 25cm but gets the ball on the way down at 15 cm making his mark a 214cm height

The guy at 193cm jumps 35 cm but marks at 34 making his marking height 227cm.

I get where you are going with that proposed line-up Cringle but to me, it's a little lopsided.

Yarran has played his best football of half-back and clearly runs riot there, let's leave him there to be our version of Peter Matera. Walker too had a breakout season across half-forward, play him there an let him go nuts kicking goals, he can take a big grab and kick straight.

Henderson is our best key position defender as well as our youngest, build the defence around him.

I personally rather the idea of 3 KPF. Casboult plays the 3rd KPF well and doesn't get the main KPD.

But not all taller people are built for more mass is what everyone is saying.

Height doesn't mean anything besides how tall you are.
I'm a tall guy but I could never bulk up as much as my mate as my frame won't allow me to.

It was that and how he read the ball. He was dynamite on the lead but also knew where the high ball was going to land and made it impossible for the defender to take that space. He was awesome.

Something else to consider and it's an old tried & true fact about our great game.

Late in the game when the scores are tight and everyone is completely knackered, the taller guys don't get any smaller but the shorter guys don't jump as high though.

There's a lesson in there for everyone really.

He was 110Kg but still had the speed to get the the contest and more than anything, had a fantastic goal conversion rate.

Would struggle today though, given the demands of players to play up the ground.

Oh definitely. Walker playing on the 4th tall KPD would cause all kinds of headaches. MM is obsessed with his run and carry out of defence.
