What did I just say. I am sure if we had a fit McPharlin and Johnson it could of been a different story.
And if your auntie had whiskers, she'd be your uncle. I'm sure RTB and the club aren't ruing their opportunities lost through injuries right now over the offseason and pondering what could've been. It's a product of the game and only a weak club with a weak coach consigns themselves to the possibilities of what could've been. Every team has injuries, and the reality is that we went out in straight sets.
The club discussed looking at resolving our shortcomings this finals series via personnel, not by hoping our stars line up next year with regards to injuries.

Exactly, I think that there are enough talented players on our list that should be forcing their way into the 22 that players like Crowley, Suban Mdb etc. should not play all year next year.
What is Crowley's, Suban, MDB, value in a free market? They are great foot soldiers, clubmen, but in reality if all three are in the same team,
something has gone wrong, or we are resting players.
Don't get me wrong you need depth, but not one of these guys would get a game at Hawthorn.

I was merely responding to the comment "if we dont pick up anyone this FA it's a bust" with a glass half full approach. Freo have a great team, when all fit/not suspended and it helps when the stars align in this regard for teams to go through.

But yes its hypothetical but isn't that 99% of the posts on here?

Aaahh righto, I agree with your post the context you meant it to be then, in that regard.

If we put aside for one moment FA and paying overs for Frawley, to me the real litmus test in the next month is whether we look to trade. If we sit on our hands again in the trade period I'll be shaking my head.

Everyone... not sure where Its best to say this, in which forum thread but as this one reflects the future planning of FFC...

At least we aren't Essendon!!

Those guys are seriously f***ed at the moment - its great viewing but terrible for our sport! S**t going to hit the fan tomorrow me thinks

It depends on what we get, what we give up, and what it costs ;) If we trade Hill for Shuey for example I will shake my head. If we trade Sheridan for Jack Martin i'll be happy.

You should get involved on the stock market :P

Oh thanks, I didn't realise that we should be trading to fill holes in our list and boost our needs, I thought we should just trade anyone for the sake of it because, you know, it's the thing to do. Please keep the educational posts coming, it's the only way I'll learn.

My pleasure :) I hope for your sake the club does do a trade, lest it incurs your discontent :p

Tim Membrey has just asked to be traded

What does Membrey add that we don't already have? Wouldn't he be competing with Crozier / Mayne for that third tall spot?

Given Mayne's output this year, I'm not against more pressure on him.

Disagree.
I think that all of them would get a game at Hawthorne. You just wouldn't find all three of them there, any one would be a good 21-25 pick.

Membrey is an undersized key forward, but when matched up on by third tall potentially a marking target in forward 50, unlike Mayne/Crozier who are more roaming forwards. Chris25 has stated that he could see us drafting a smaller key forward to partner Apeness and Tabs long term. Membrey fits the bill IMO.

Ok so..

Do we even need more talls/bigs? Port play with one key forward, Shulz with Westy a mobile tall, I suppose. All the rest are dangerous forwards/mids which we also have.

In the back line Dawson and Silvagni are serviceable not too mention Johnson and hopefully McPharlin.

I may be really clutching at straws here but we're just going to have to make do with what we have.

Not necessarily. Along with having the personnel, getting to the GF and subsequently winning it has a bit to do with things going your way i.e. good run with injuries, suspensions etc.

Freo could of easily made it this year. I hate using injuries as an excuse but it would of been handy having Johnson, Ballas, McPharlin in the finals and Walters ALL year.
It would have been handy. However:

In 2012 McPharlin didn't play at all in the finals series.
In 2013, McPharlin didn't play for half the season and was a late recall for the Geelong final. Johnson missed the Geelong final.
In 2014, both McPharlin and Johnson missed the entire finals series.

Furthermore, in 2010, Ballantyne missed the entire finals series.

This set of players that it would be nice to have seem to have a history of being injury prone at the back end of long seasons. Going into next season, with both McPharlin and Johnson being over 30, what chance do you reckon they will have off both being available come September?

The club has to bite the bullet and accept that the master formula Ross Lyon hit on in late 2012 to get an average of 75% win rate since will not work from here on.

He describes himself as being Darling like - and playing that high half forward 'roaming' role which is essentially what Crozier does, hence the question

I was a fan of Membrey is his draft year but havent heard boo about him since.. He is a better 1v1 player than Mayne though and is also a natural forward which is becoming more and more a desperate need

Does he put on any pressure the other way though?

No he doesnt.. but neither do 90% of the best forward of centre players in the comp.. you have to give a little to get a little. I think Mayne can be used as a little bit of a Plug'n'play player depending on where we need him matchup wise week to week

Agree with this RE: Mayne. Another flanker like Mayne wouldn't hurt us as Mayne is so easily adaptable to the backline if need be. I think he does okay in the middle as well (?)
