Anyone read the article on herald sun saying Carlton sures up its spine, but Essendon steals the draft.....
Made me sick

With reduced rotations and no sub, teams could well go back to playing 2 genuine ruckmen.
I reckon it will go even further the other way, one ruck and a couple of pinch hitters doing 30-40% of the grunt work.

For us that could be a combo of McKay/Casboult/Rowe.

Genuine rucks will have no choice but to be versatile and go forward to rest instead of the bench because the mids and some extent the hbf/hff will be needing those rotations more than anyone else.

If you've got 2 pure rucks that are genuinely versatile then happy days for them and will probably be played in the starting 22 but that's rare when looking across all the teams in the comp

I hate all this "winning the draft" stuff. It's way too early to tell who is a winner from a draft....all one can say is that some clubs preferred players that the media were less aware of. And secondly, any club with multiple first rounders will appear to have "won the draft" because they had more selections at the top.

We've clearly walked away with a good haul, however we had more top 20 picks than any other club, so its hardly a level playing field.

The only thing you can really assess the day after a draft is did you address the short comings of your list. Given we have holes everywhere that can't be fixed in 1 draft we have taken the first step and had a good draft. Freo on the other hand selected good players but didn't address there needs so I don't think they had a great draft.

Little surprised we s

We seem keen to offload Casboult I'm not a fan of offloading key position stocks when we've just lost Waite and Henderson Kpp are gold shouldn't be willingly offloading them I believe or atleast younger kpps.
Given time for curnow and mckay to develop Casboult can play closer to goal and be a genuine full forward with his size and better kicking he will give sides a real headache I feel .Being a late developer he's now in his prime I hope we don't trade him I'm sure we could look elsewhere on out list if we want another first Rd pick next year who I'm not sure .

Im a massive fan of Levi, but i struggle to find realistic options i think the blues will consider offloading to get a second round pick or package with a second to grab an extra first round. I see Levi and Everitt as two options and the other is Murphy and Gibbs which i think are highly unlikely, if Kruz has another stinker season with injury maybe he could go.

Hawks, Freo, Eagles all played with 2 genuine ruckmen. The changes will help this with more players on the bench, spending longer on the bench.

Maybe, but at the same time, they got some sliders who were touted as top 20 prospects with their picks in the late 20's and 30's. The only way they could have "won" a draft like this would be to trade into the top order and get a strong KPP, if they had settled for any old tall guy available at their pick, that would be a failure if the player didnt "come on" and a strong mid was still on the table.

Fair call but remember playing in carltons forward line wouldnt be an easy thing to do of recent times . And reckon he's about to hit a very good patch in his career and feel it will be a mistake to offload a guy that's about to hit his best ever form for yes a first Rd pick but not a given that first rounder will be better than Casboult .

I think this is true about him hitting a good patch and it being hard to play in the blues fwd line
I can't personally see us taking another at this stage but Nyuon and Parrella are still available in the rookie draft.

I think McKay will spend 25% game time in the ruck once Levi retires.

#faithinphillips

Um Levi is 25 years old, are you saying Mckay will ruck 25% of game time in 6 years?

Interesting stat I heard this morning:

There has been two previous instances where Carlton have had a Silvagni/McKay combination on the list - Serge/David and SOS/Andy. In both of those instances they were all part of premiership success!

Fingers crossed our third Silvagni/McKay combination is as successful as the previous two...
Heard that on SEN this morning as well. Gotta make it a hat trick now.

Wouldnt reduced rotations mean you want more run and therefore only 1 genuine ruckman?

Depends on the ruckmen you have...they must be agile enough and be able to play forward like Hawthorn have done with McEvoy, Ceglar and Hale.

Weve effectively traded:
Henderson for McKay
Yarran and Menzel for Curnow
Bell for Cuningham

More Yarran for Cuningham as it was the direct pick we got for him.

Menzel and Bell for Curnow and Kerridge as we would have given up 20 or 21 to GWS for their four players if we didn't get 28 from the Crows.

That second trade looks good. The first ... as long as Cuningham is a hard worker we will do fine. At least he's not a flanker and can add to the midfield rotation.

It could be argued with less rotations you need less runners to rotate. Will need less burst players and more endurance runners. We will find out over the season. Agreee that it will certainly depend on who is on the list. Wood for instance would be no good as a second ruck.

Congratulations to Carlton Football Club on a brilliant draft and Hope you guys are up and about in 2-3 years, I think that your club has gone about this draft in the right way with selecting 2 KPP in Jacob Weitering & Harry McKay as the 2 big guys and both are quality players and people.

Curnow is a bonus where you have selected him and could easily have been top 5 selection and will add quality to your foward line as well as another big bodied option in the middle,Davin Cuningham is also a quality player that will hopefully become a 200 game player that will serve your club well.

Another 2 years of good drafts and possible a few foot solidiers as well as a FA or 2 will have you guys back up and about
Congrats guys

Thanks...you have redeemed yourself. So all that posturing about the Yarran pick made bugger all difference...to Carlton and Richmond.

You are 100% correct and i always said that whilst it seems important to us fans during trade week if its #19 or #16
I really dont think that both clubs selections would have changed and its more important to us fans as far as getting bragging rights than it is to the clubs in the end.

Im also very happy to have a RIOLI at the club and Daniel looks like he will be a'Delicous & Special" Player :p
