With the season commencing thought it time to kick our time honoured thread off for the year. I see that Knightmare has already started throwing some names together in his thread on the D&T board.

Clearly the potential FA addition of Dangerfield will dominate the GFC discussion this year. But we will be taking at least 3 others in the main draft you'd think.

I very much doubt we will look at a ruck considering the additions at the end of last year! A tall defender is still an area of need - particularly in Delaney fails in his bid to get back playing AFL. We added a nice blend of mids last year - Cockatoo, Gore and Gregson already have impressed in the time we've had them. Cunico will take longer and likely play a half back role down the track. Assuming Dangerfield is moving over to us we are probably ok for mids in the short term, though another A-grader wouldn't go astray.

So what type of player and who do we look at? A quality tall defender as mentioned with the impending retirements of Lonergan and Rivers. Another small defender allowing the release of Guthrie to play midfield. A defensive midfielder/tagger that we haven't had since Ling retired are a few types that come to mind.

Players names? I have no idea at this stage. Thoughts?

Im not 100% but with BLitz being elevated last year we have no Rookies currently in their last year. That means no elevate or cut pressure - thus a full boat of 3 ND picks available currently.

Id say Bate is vulnerable but he is Y2
Toohey, Y2
Read Y1
Lux Y2
Lucey Y1

History show even if they are valuable Geelong will leave them there as long as possible . Financially prudent.

Who do we see possibly leaving at years end?

Definites for retirement for me are McIntosh, Enright and Kelly.

I suppose any of the other over 30's are possibles but all seem to be capable of playing another year at the moment. Things can certainly change in 22 or so weeks though. If Simpson has further issues with his back, Menzel does his knee again or Vardy has further issues they could easily go as well. Cowan and McCarthy are others in a similar position.

Those on the trade table if they don't break through in 2015 include Kersten, Walker, Smedts and Horlin-Smith.

All in all you'd think we will possibly have another year with quite a few list changes.

Given the needs of our list Toohey would have to improve by a decent amount to get another year and
Bates would want to play some decent football this year and not break down with injury.

IMO there is a decent chance that both won't be here for a third year.

Given that Luxford and Lucey are category B rookies and don't take up list space you'd think that they'd get the full three years.

I very much doubt that Toohey will be with us next year.

After last year that surprises me but I have not seen or heard of him thus far….

Perhaps you know more than I?

Form and development of last year and the continuation of that, IMO, had him tracking well over 3 years.

May not be the pipe dream you and I thought...

(Desperately trying to find positives from today)
If only we had taken Matthew Broadbent all those years ago.

Or, if only Brodie Smith had slipped one more spot. :D

Actually, today reminded me why I was so gung-ho about Wigg. I know he makes no difference to the result today but having a guy down back who can hit his man up over 40-45m would be a god-send.

I probably undersold how useful Josh Hunt really was.

Our skill level has really declined hasn't it. Smith has turned out to be a beauty. Smedts not so...yet. Wigg has that razor sharp kick that we could do with out of defence. We really need someone back there that can deliver it 60m on a plate.

I think we all know its not a one player solution..... but medium defender is something to put on the shop list. Days like today , that list looks long so probably best to just do that thing the do in "Men in Black".

Well, there was a post asking people to find a "young" defender on the list.

After Bews and Smedts all I could come up with was Thurlow and Hail Marys like Cockatoo, Gregson and Cowan.

Smedts isn't a defender by my reckoning but after thinking about that I decided he was there because we didn't have any other options.

There's kid called Stephen Tahana who is being talked up as a terrific young small defender by Chris25

McIntosh Enright and Kelly definitely retire. SJ and Rivers not sure if their bodies can go another year, both are playing well though. Bartel goes on as will Stokes.

It's quite early to call but if I had to call it now I'd say Simpson and Cowan's bodies won't hold up. I have the same view on McCarthy but he is contracted for 2016 so he will stay. I doubt Menzel will make it back either.

I think if both Clark and Stanley stay fit all year it is certain either (Walker or Kersten will seek a trade themselves (I am not happy both are OOC because it means we won't get fair compensation for them)

Smedts and Blease would both be on shaky ground.

Horlin Smith is a good serviceable player in a weak midfield, I don't think the club would want to lose him unless he seeks a trade himself.

While I would have liked pick 21 with Blakely today also showed me how terrible our rucks are, if Stanley can become a good ruckman it won't be a bad trade.

We could turn over a lot of players this year so I expect big involvement in the draft.

my bro and i remarked the exact same thing at the game yesterday....dinky 10-15m kicks to a deep pocket and then kamikaze play on into no mans land.

You don't know what you've got till its gone.

We do not have a single listed player than can hit a bloke on the chest 50 m away with a pass that gets no more than 4m off the ground. Josh had his faults no doubt, and he missed a few kicks, but he made more than he missed.

maybe mackie...who knows if they are actually encouraged to do so, for instance i cannot remember varcoe doing it last season but saw him kick two 40m odd kicks to cloke on saturday.
