2015 World Cup format

10 teams

9-16 in the world play off in a qualifying tournament, in New Zealand and Australia so they qualify in the same conditions, probably the summer before as October is possibly too late for a Feb tournament and also runs the risk of more rain affected matches

All teams play each other once, then a Semi Final and maybe a final

2 finallists advance to the World Cup

World Cup sees all 10 teams play each other once

Semi Finals then the Final

Not sure how many matches that adds up to but the group stages suck, let em all play each other then you get a true winner plus fits in with a reduced World Cup

So much for a 'World' cup really.

I'm very annoyed - Ireland were one of the high points for me. Watched all their games.

Great news, may be more forced due to the threat of successful legal action though. Look forward to the June meeting.

Good work by Pawar for requesting a rethink.

now cricket australia are in favour of a qualifying tournament

it really gets you thinking then what the hell they were doing at the first meeting.

If this decision didn't get the global outrage it did, then I am sure the ICC would have just left it as it stands, without another meeting.

It will be interesting to see the outcome of this, as if it is left at a 10 team tournament, but with qualification, then Bangladesh and Zimbabwe would definitely oppose this. I guess it then depends on whether the other full members will support them. Otherwise it could be expanded to 12 teams, which really would be the perfect number.

I don't know what the big deal is with lessening the amount of teams. Have more teams if you want, just have a more entertaining system and play less games.
The question is less about how many teams is ideal, but rather having the best 10, 12, 14 or 16 teams competing. If Ireland is one of the 10 best ODI nations, they should be at the next World Cup, at the expense of Bangladesh or Zimbabwe.

Otherwise ...

It is no longer considered a World Cup in my eyes, it's now the World Invitational.

Im happy with it.

Something needed to be done to shorten it and keep it exciting. The last few WCs (especially West indies) was so drawn out and boring that everyone just stopped caring about it

the last few wc's have been drawn out due to the pathetic efforts of WI (all of them since 96 pretty much) & England (all of them from 96 to 07 ) as well as India and Pakistan in 07 and Zimbabwe (all of them since 99) and Bangladesh lacking consistency. Not because of the associates.

So after the annual conference we have 14 teams and the 10 team World Cup has been delayed until 2019 (England). I assume they will go with the same 2011 format.

What are people's thoughts on a AFL type double chance system instead of knockouts? So basically you would have the A1 v B2, A2 v B1 with the losers playing off against the A3 v B4 and A3 v B3 games. It would make the meaningless group matches where pretty much most countries are guaranteed finals action more relevant during the group stages.

It might also help South Africa get through...

Personally I like the idea of a 12 team world cup. You need some of the minnows but 14 teams creates too many dud games. Maybe 12 teams with 4 groups of 3 with the top 2 of each group going through to the "Super Eights" where each team plays each other. Teams that have already played each other don't play again.

Anyway, with 14 teams there's not much you can really do unfortunately. I guess it'll be the exact same format as the last World Cup.

With Australia and NZ co-hosting its a little easier to shorten the tournament by taking advantage of the time differences. A few extra games in WA (maybe including minnow games in Bunbury) and its easier to double up than in other host nations. A day game in NZ, a day-nighter in WA, along with a few where times do clash and the preliminary rounds could be cut by a week. Only a few times in the last WC did any doubling up occur.
Hopefully at least a 12 team tournament will still happen in 2019. Unfotrunately it seems locked in that there will be no new Test nation before 2020 no matter who performs, as the draft FTP goes up untl that date.
