If a bid comes in, in the second round, we have to use our second round pick to pay the points deficit. Unless of course we trade out our second round pick, then we have to use our next available pick, i.e. Collingwoods third rounder that belongs to us.
Watching for bids on Allison and Watson will be another cause for anxiety on the night.

What I do not understand is why would GWS go for Taranto rather McCluggage.

I can understand GWS going for Ainsworth. Ready made player that doesn't need to spend time in the NEAFL before making his debut.
Both would provide similar type of games as goal kicking mids but Taranto is seen as maybe not as classy as McCluggage but he has the athletic ability, desire and grunt to be a better AFL prospect in the long term. McCluggage is a bit flaky and could go either way as a Watts or Pendlebury IMO.

I suspect that they'll adjust the picks to pay the deficits prior to the trade period.

Can we assume at this late stage that GWS are not going to be penalised draft picks? Gone very quiet unless I have missed something.

To me, it's always seemed unlikely that even the AFL would step in between trade period and the draft. Sure, they did against Carlton, but that was a very different era than todays'. On the hand, this is the AFL we're talking about.

A penalty for next year's draft may yet happen.

Even if Essendon take McGrath would GWS really pass up on McCluggage? At that end of the draft you surely have to take the best player available.
I think they might. Schwab mentioned during trade week that he didn't know which way Ess were leaning but basically knew who GWS were taking (I guess it was discussed during the trade).

He then mentioned a week later that he hopes Clug would slip through to us. Doubt hed say that if he knew GWS were into him.

Says to me, if Essendon pass of the Clug, then I reckon he's packing his bags for QLD.

I agree it seems unlikely for the same reason, but with the black box that is the AFL who knows.

Presumably they will have the customary interminable and cliché ridden interview with Pick 1 right after he is drafted leaving us dangling for about 5-10 minutes before GWS determine who slides to us.

Landsberger is a ****ing tool. This may be the most infuriating footy article I have read in years. There is EXACTLY ONE reason we should bid on Setterfield or Bowes and that is if they are 1, 2 or 3 on our draft board. That's it. Period.

Is it really hard to believe that we could rate Setterfield or Bowes behind McCluggage, McGrath or Ainsworth?

As an aside, where were these draft conspiracy articles when the Demons did a deal to get Viney to slide to the second round?

Feel like a copy-paste for those of us too cheap to have access through the paywall?

He's a moron. There must be an IQ limit of about 70 at the herald sun.

You know I think we might be better off not reading it.

Wouldn't forcing another team to use their earlier picks also be considered draft manipulation?

What if you do that and end up with a player you didn't want? Draft Seppuku?

It is not our responsibility to keep other teams honest at the draft ffs, it is our responsibility to pick the players we rate the highest. If we don't bid, we don't rate. Pretty simple.

Spot on. Had basically just tweeted the exact statement to Landsberger.

His argument is basically "if Brisbane don't dishonestly manipulate the draft, then the draft is a sham".

I hate to give the Suns a leg up but I really hope we don't feel compelled to bid on Bowes in response to this uninformed media campaign.

Landsberger is trying to say on Twitter that some scouts have Setterfield and Bowes as 1 and 2 - doesn't seem to understand the concept that the Lions may not have the same view.

It is not difficult really, the Lions just pick the player they believe to be the best available at pick 3, whether they are an academy player is irrelevant.

So why don't Essendon bid on them if somebody thinks they're worth pick 1. They're colluding as well.

Hmm they wouldn't be Victorian scouts, feeding dross to the media to drive their anti-academy agenda... would they, Sam?

what shite from Landsberger, if they are rated 1 and 2 in his opinion it is easily solved.

1) essendon bid on one or both at 1.
2) GWS bid on Bowes at 2.
3) the suns bid on Setterfield at 4 if he is still available.

it's not our responsibility to "keep them honest".

Any scouts who think Setterfield and Bowes are 1 and 2 should be looking for new roles (outside of football).

Gary Buckenara's top 4, he has Setterfield at 5 and Bowes at 6.

4. SAM PETREVSKI-SETON

Midfielder/half forward, 181cm, 76kg, Claremont/Halls Creek

Buckenara says: Petrevski-Seton has been an AFL player-in-waiting for quite some time. He’s played very well at under-16s and under-18s and played league footy for Claremont in Western Australia. He’ll come into the AFL system ready to go and be pushing very quickly for a senior game. He offers a lot of upside, has an interesting background in terms of where he’s come from and his journey to being draft hopeful. He’s got the dedication it takes to make it in the AFL. A club won’t go wrong by picking him.

3. BEN AINSWORTH

Midfielder, 179cm, 74kg, Gippsland Power/Morwell

Buckenara says: A small forward/midfielder, Ainsworth is a clever player who makes good decisions with the ball. I like the way he goes about his work — he has genuine upside and I think there would be a lot of clubs looking for a player exactly like him. He’s classy and a professional in all he does. Will be a very good pick-up.

2. ANDREW McGRATH

Defender, 179cm, 75kg, Sandringham Dragons/East Brighton/Brighton

Buckenara says: A ready-made running defender who can also play in the midfield, McGrath’s improvement could be quite dramatic once he gets into the AFL system. He makes very good decisions with the footy, has good skills and is just one of those players who is very reliable. When you’re looking for rebound defenders you’re looking for guys who can break the lines and McGrath is exactly that type of player. I think he’ll adjust to the tempo of AFL quickly.

1. HUGH McCLUGGAGE

Midfielder, 185cm, 75kg, North Ballarat Rebels/South Warrnambool

Buckenara says: McCluggage is a beautiful size, good mover and a good decision-maker. He wins his own footy but he’s also very good on the outside because he’s well balanced and doesn’t waste too many possessions — that’s the most impressive part about his game, he’s very clean. McCluggage is a level-headed young man who will be around AFL circles for a very long time. Essendon will be tossing up who to take, but I just couldn’t go past him. Will be a star.

Certainly rates the GWS Academy kids.

14. ISAAC CUMMING

Defender, 183cm, 72kg, Broken Hill/GWS Academy

Buckenara says: Cumming can play on a wing, across half-back and even half-forward — he’s a bit on an all-rounder type of player. He plays outside and is a really smooth mover with a good kick. He is available to GWS as part of its academy despite playing footy with North Adelaide in the under-18s.

13. KOBE MUTCH

Midfielder, 184cm, 79kg, Gol Gol/Bendigo Pioneers/GWS Academy

Buckenara says: A mid-sized midfielder, Much wins his own ball. He has a good work rate but probably needs to work a bit more on his repeat efforts despite the fact he knows how to find the footy and win it. He’s also got good skills, so he’s one of those elite kicking type players who are very important. He’ll be high on club radars.

12. HARRY PERRYMAN

Half-back/forward, 184cm, 75kg, Collingullie/GWS Academy

Buckenara says: Perryman reads the play really well and can play back and forward. He’s good overhead, skilful and is a very competitive type. He’s a member of GWS’s Academy and I think clubs will be very keen to make the Giants pay a decent price for him.
