If Conole et al get to call out McCluggage's name tonight I doubt they'll be able to contain their excitement. We probably never expected to get him at pick 2, let alone pick 3.

For quite a while I'd simply put him out of mind because it seemed like a foregone conclusion Bombers would take him. I guess they still might but it's looking more and more likely.

McCluggage or Ainsworth? is there a chance if the bombers go with McCluggage that the giants still go with the much speculated Taranto?

apart from that pick 3 is a no worries situation for us, picks 16, 21 and 22 is where we can build our list if we get it right.

Will takes years to build his body up but we are drafting on potential more so than initial impact with Hugh IMO.

How about a photo from this year and not the beginning of last.

He had one of the more developed bodies in the all star game on grand final eve.

check out jack billings
even smaller than hugh in my opinion similar player with his performance in the forward 50 can play a similar role for us as he builds up size
billings probs one of saints most important players when fit

;)

Hey look I would be stoked to get McCluggage who has been rated as number 1 all year by the media and a lot of AFL clubs. We would finally get a genuine elite midfield talent. Just the main query I have is his body. I will shut up about this now anyway.

I think you're exaggerating. He had no pre-season this year and plenty of guys come into the systems like rakes and manage to put on mass. Getting him to a nice lean 83 - 85kg in a professional environment will be easy as pie. I personally don't think he needs a great deal of mass to have an impact with his playing style though. Just needs more core strength to avoid getting bumped off the ball but it's unlikely we'll be starting him on ball anyway considering how he can play up forward. He'll be given time to put on some weight and I'm very, very confident it won't be an issue. Let's at least see how he looks in March after an AFL pre-season before we get too worried he's going to be a Jarrad Grant who can't put on anything.

I believe we were saying the same thing about Schaches shoulders and not being able to put bulk on. Body shapes have changed from 10yrs ago and it's never more evident when I look at Hawthorn players.

That's an interesting take on it. In terms of his ability to play at senior level, think there is an over emphasis on his physical attributes and that what should enable him to play senior footy relatively early is his raw talent. He is 185cm, same height as Mathieson. Mathieson played last year and after a year of senior footy and a full preseason is still only listed at 79kg, vs 75kg for McCluggage who is still a junior. Different style of player but no one has suggested Matho will take years to develop.

Wouldn't expect an 18 year old to be much bigger than that. Absolutely normal size. Two-three months of hard work in the gym and you'll hardly recognise him.

Nope.

Bid comes at 35 - 522 points. 20% discount becomes 418 points payable.
Pick 35 is in the 2nd round. At this stage, we have no points to pay, so it comes off next year's second rounder.
If we come 16th next year, our second rounder is pick 21, worth 878.
Pick 21 (878) loses 418 points to become pick 38 (465 points).

You lose it off the pick in the round in which the bid is received, not your next pick. 20% discount is great, but "the round in which the bid is received" is a killer for teams at the bottom of the ladder. Fine for teams near the top though.

Bids from second round on don't receive a 20% discount, but receive a set value discount. From memory it's something like 197 points.

Devil's advocate:

McCluggage isn't developed physically yet. When he gets physically developed he'll be able to compete. Ainsworth is already physically developed, but has been versing undeveloped players. He might be found out when he has to verse other developed player.

Not saying that's the case, but there are concerns either way.

But I'm saying I'm concerned he doesn't have the body shape to develop physically.

The dry weight of bone in the average full grown man is around 4.5kg. Bones have very little to do with potential mass gain or strength. 185cm at 75kg at the moment makes him look slender but he will easily put 8-12kg on in a professional environment with a weights program. Skinfolds are notoriously unreliable as well so there is probably a variance of 2-3 kgs of muscle that a kid could have at that weight of muscle depending on where they sit between 6 and 12% body fat which you can't really eye ball until someone has their shirt off especially with arms that haven't been bulked.

This bloke didn't have broad shoulders, seems to have quite fine wrists, but is arguably the greatest player of all time, and pound for pound the strongest. Not suggesting McCluggage is gonna be anywhere as good, just saying...

All I heard is "McCluggage will be as good as Ablett Sr".

I know McCluggage has been compared to Cotchin and it's a pretty good comparison but I also see a fair bit of Robbie Gray in him perhaps due to his creativity in the forward line and ability to make an impact on the scoreboard.

And you may be right, and you may be wrong. All I was saying is that Ainsworth has been more solidly built than his competitors, and maybe he will struggle versing players the same size as him.

I don't think that will actually be the case, but at the end of the day, every single drafted player will have a question mark on them. Not all will translate junior form to senior footy.
