The coach has a big say in interviews and whether he thinks he can work with them or not. The talent assessment is very much the recruiter's job. They are the ones watching the games every week, they watch over 100+ live games a year and there's probably around half a dozen or so doing that. Plus there would be more part timers and scouts as well. The coaches would watch 10 live games of junior footy a year if that. Obviously the coach would still give some input on what he thinks of the player and whether he thinks he fits into the team structure and all that. But ultimately the recruiter gets the final call and would back his assessment of the player in. It's his job and his bum on the line.
I guess an example would be when Brendan McCartney really wanted Wines for instance. Dalrymple said no, I rate Macrae higher and that was that.
Would you rate Wines or Macrae higher?
