The coach has a big say in interviews and whether he thinks he can work with them or not. The talent assessment is very much the recruiter's job. They are the ones watching the games every week, they watch over 100+ live games a year and there's probably around half a dozen or so doing that. Plus there would be more part timers and scouts as well. The coaches would watch 10 live games of junior footy a year if that. Obviously the coach would still give some input on what he thinks of the player and whether he thinks he fits into the team structure and all that. But ultimately the recruiter gets the final call and would back his assessment of the player in. It's his job and his bum on the line.

I guess an example would be when Brendan McCartney really wanted Wines for instance. Dalrymple said no, I rate Macrae higher and that was that.

Would you rate Wines or Macrae higher?

ok thought i would do my drafting power rankings for the dogs, my top 20 players that i think a "dogs type" and "bevo" players, i also put a higher value on what i see our weakness as, and what players will add to our depth charts and be best for this side in 3-5 years rather than in 2017.

2016 afl draft power rankings for the dogs

1 oliver florent
2 Jarrod Berry
3 Todd Marshall
4 Tim English
5 Jy Simpkin
6 Jake Scrimshaw
7 Willem Drew
8 Dan Vanables
9 SPP
10 Zac Sproule
11 Brennan Cox
12 Jordan Gallucci
13 Josh Battle
14 Will Haywood
15 Cedric Cox
16 Jordan Ridley
17 Harrison Macreadie
18 Luke Ryan
19 Shai Bolton
20 Kobe Mutch

While i'm not going to say im an expert by any stretch and i haven't watched as much under 18s this year as i have in other years, i have been doing a truckload of research and have been reading everything around and looking at all the Phantoms and reading their reasons for the picks.

first off in this poll i voted for Florent and Drew early on, both of these kids have impressed me from what limited stuff i have watched and read. there is something about Drew, i can really see him becoming a big game finals player.

Berry is another one who i think if he lasts to our pick we just have to pick him, he looks every bit like a Bulldogs type player.

the two areas i see as weakness' are in the 2nd and 3rd forward tall type, with crameri cloke and Boyd there now we have the luxury of time to develop a kid without the pressure of getting them into the AFL side anytime soon, we now have a great development path with our VFL side that i believe we can improve on this area from the past.

this is why i have a few guys higher than in a normal rating were you'd rate the kids on their talents.'

I do think that we will get our 2 early picks from these 20 and any combo Dal picks i think will be right for the club.

I remember everything that was coming out from the Hawks in 2004 was how much they loved tambling, there was even a story that they took him fishing up north.

Jason i think came out on radio some time after and said that their plan that draft was always to pick 2 KPP because they seen that as the best way to build a premiership.

could we be doing something like that, trying to force ports hand to make a player we want slip to us?

we are trying to trick Port to draft....?

So many unknowns for us fans aren't there?! That's why we should treat it all as a bit of fun and just get excited about the likelihood that we will bring another one or two players into the club who will play in a Premiership. :D I won't be getting stressed out about this draft that's for sure.
Definitely more chill about it than previous years, for obvious reasons

For sure, but there have been some comments about being disappointed in a lot of the highlight videos or less impressed compared to previous years. Wasn't suggesting that I'm well across the draft pool this year (I'm not) just more impressed than others have been.
I think you might be referring to me here – I did say that I wasn’t impressed by many of the highlights packages, but to be honest I think it is more to do with the editing than anything else. Half of the clips on the draft machine have 2 minutes of interviews and comparisons and about 30 seconds of actual footage and even then the footage is chopped so much that you can’t see any lead up movement or even kick effectiveness half the time.

I’m sure this is a great draft class as every informed voice on the matter has stated, but in most of the footage I have seen there hasn’t been anything that made me sit up and take notice – just a lot of get ball, kick ball footage.

I also should mention that I haven’t watched any footage from the top few players who won’t be available at our pick, so that’s probably the pick of the highlights that I haven’t seen.

Is there somewhere better to get highlights than the AFL website?

Intensity needs a lot of work. Can lack it at times.
That's a shame. I like intensity and aggression in key defenders. Pretty crucial in my opinion. Desperation and intensity save goals regularly.

To be honest I have no idea who I was referring to - I just remember seeing a few comments along those lines. :P Fair enough though!

Generally if you YouTube particular player names you'll find a number of videos from different games/sources. :thumbsu:

Well he can pick the ball off the ground about as cleanly as the Bont. He's also a pretty good kick and is capable of pulling off the odd freakish pass. He also has good hands on the lead. You don't really see him baulk, side step opponents and run away from them like Cyril. Nor do you see him kick goals out of packs, but I guess the role he plays might have something to do with it. I don't know, I tend to think the Cyril call is a bit of wishful thinking.
From his brief highlights reel he reminds me a bit of Jeremy Cameron. Executes at top speed and uses his reach to get the ball to his advantage. People are worried about his lack of marking but Jake Stringer doesn't take too many marks and he seems to go ok...

Cool I'll have to do a bit more research.
Was there a poster who used to compile a whole lot of footage? I feel like it used to be a lot easier...

We have a terrible record with players who lack intensity - Jarrad Grant and Andrejs Everitt come to mind.

Dale Morris has far less natural talent than those two and look at his career - and I see a lot of intense attack on the ball and man in Zaine Cordy too.

Skippos used to, but don't think he has the time anymore.

Guess No.1 for draft week.

1 - Todd Marshall (197cm Forward)
2 - Cedric Cox (184cm Defender)
3 - Sam McLarty (193cm Athletic Swingman)
4 - Brodie Romensky (189cm big bodied mid/defender)

Rookie - A ruck capable of being an effective target around the ground I.e Lloyd Meek, Peter Ladhams, Brock McGregor, Charles Roberts etc.

My hopes:

18 - Dan Venables/Jy Simpkin

26 - Jordan Gallucci/Josh Battle/Willem Drew

50 - Ben Long/Zach Sproule (if they slide)

75 - Brodie Romensky/Lachie Murphy

And then to rookie Larkey.
