I'm not knocking the guys we got this year, I'm really excited about what they will deliver further down the track.

This year's draft has been called a mids draft but the vast majority of them don't appear to be what you would call 'pure mids'. They are small forwards who want to push into the midfield or something similar. The other thing that seems to stick out this year more so than in the past is that they all have a serious flaw somewhere in their skill set.

There is no standout and its a real raffle for the first 25-30 spots, they are all quite 'same same', in fact this draft will really test the recruiters, one of them will unearth a genuine nugget from somewhere but its way too hard to know from which part of the draft.

Next year's draft pool is being touted as a 'superdraft' and I know we have heard it all before but after reading a lot of opinions across the 'net, I do believe it will be.

In a few years time, I can see this years draft being viewed as light on for solid long-term players like a 'calm before the storm' to next year when every club really loads up on highly talented lads.

Trading into next season's draft has a very high appeal to me.

Bottom-ager James Worpel continues to put forward performances that suggest he is one of 2017s top midfield prospects with 27 disposals, 10 contested possessions, five tackles, four clearances, 10 inside 50s, two goals and two score assists.

Bottom-age ruck prospect and AFL Under-18 All Australian player Sam Hayes continued his progress through the ruck with 18 disposals, seven marks (three contested), 30 hitouts and two behinds. Signs from Hayes are encouraging because he won the hitout battle and had an impact around the ground.

Bottom-ager Jaidyn Stephenson continued his progress up forward with 17 disposals, seven marks (two contested), three goals and three score assists.

Cassidy Parish, a bottom-age midfielder and the younger brother of Darcy, impressed with 26 disposals, 14 contested possessions, four tackles, nine clearances and two score assists.

Bottom-ager Jack Higgins continued his strong form with 25 disposals, 10 contested possessions, nine marks (two contested), five tackles, four clearances, two goals and two score assists.

Lewis Young, a 198cm bottom-ager, showed some excellent signs with 23 disposals, 12 marks (seven contested), four goals and one score assist.

Probably effectively net Marchbank, Tomlinson & Stewart for Kreuzer...which would be an astute trade.
Id expect we'd need to throw in slightly more to get Steele as well.

Then trade our third and the doggies third for a second rounder, which we trade to St Kilda for Longer (rumour that we were into him) as replacement for Krooz.

IN: Marchbank, Tomlinson, Stewart, Longer
OUT: Krooz, 2 x 3rd rounders

Get in 4 talented, young key position players.

If he has a 20 disposal game, he may end up kicking a huge bag.

It is not exactly killing it. If he can't get it often at U18, I have concerns he will only find it harder at senior level. We picked up something similar last year in McKay, but what I saw in the Champs last year gives me more confidence.

Most of the good forwards do kick big bags in U18s. At Pick 5/6 I am looking for a sure thing

Im going by the rumour previously posted that Sydney and GWS are interested by EarlSpalding.

I dont think it's that hard for them to afford him...he's on what $400k a year? Clubs can easily find ways to free up that kind of money...a few retirements, trade a few players, backend contracts etc etc

Sydney dont have THAT much in this area...Sinclair and Tippett had a few injury issues this year.

They may want to keep Tippett in the forward line more next year, and play Sinclair and Kreuz together in the ruck.

Outside that it's a few young guys like Nankervis, who seem ok.

Problem is, I don't think there is a "sure thing" in this years draft pool. All of them will be more speculative than normal due to various foibles.

Bolts has been banging on lately about getting more midfield depth and we're rumoured to trade in talls like Marchbank, Tomlinson and Stewart.

If they deem Marshall to be the best option then they will take him. Besides, those three you have listed are no certainty to come to us even though we keep hearing various "concrete" rumours about one or more of them.

We will know on Draft day whether the GWS4 are on our list. If they are it will be unlikely that we would take Marshall. If they aren't then maybe we will take him.

And trading with GWS and GC just got a lot harder.

It all but kills our ability to trade a bunch of shit late round picks for an earlier pick (worth less total points).

Two for one deals are about the only way we can rort the system now. That, and getting excess picks off the expansion sides now, in exchange for future picks.

I am more and more leaning towards mega-loading up into next year's draft and having that one all-encompassing plunge that sets us up for the next decade.

So if a player is out of contract and declines all trade offers?
Is he obliged to go into draft or can he be a DFA?

It depends if they are offered a new contract.
If they are offered a deal and don't sign then they have to go to the draft.
If they aren't offered a deal they become DFA

McEvoy was still 24 with upside when the Hawks traded him in. Kreuzer is 27 and arguably has no upside, with a pretty scary injury history.

Kreuzer is a solid player but not top level as Wookie says. Nonetheless good teams only need solid ruck men playing a role, so Kreuzer would definitely be of value to a decent team. For a second round pick tops however.
