Different cultures approach death differently. It's not a revelation.

Assigning values to that difference is more than a little controversial

You dont actually have to be indigenous to know about indigenous culture.

That depends on the context of what you claim to know and how you want to use it

We all know about differences in cultures to a whole range of things but when you assign higher or lower priority it's very messy

With respect, Jenny et al, but what happened on the weekend has nothing whatsoever to do with the death of a family member - that is what the spin doctors want the whole narrative to be deflected to.

I have been in Impeys position, losing my mum to cancer (not the drink driving bit and crashing into 4 cars). Grief comes and goes. While it is no way shape or form and excuse to drink drive, losing a loved one only a month ago will certainly impact your mindset. I for one will cut him some slack when it comes to feeling the need to have a few more than normal at a party. Sometimes the pain just comes and goes.

Impey will pay his penalty via the Courts and a Club imposed penalty, and hopefully he and other footballers etc will learn something from this experience,

However, IMO, the biggest issue in all this are the behind the scenes spin, lies etc .... what was Monfries' role? why were neighbours "threatened" or "persuaded" to suppress what happened? why did he walk one day but then it was decided he rode a bike? where did the bike come from? who aided him? why the differing stories emanating from KT and co? why the delay in getting Impey to front up to the police? i'm sure there are more questions.

My take; I am sick of people having these huge expectations on kids with very little life experience because they play AFL. We don't put the same pressure on kids who do the same thing who don't play AFL. Does that justify his actions? By no means! This is around how the media sensationalise the story because they know the reaction; the conversation in this thread and the conversation in the Port thread for example. This is a police matter and should be treated as a police matter. From a police perspective I hope they go hard on the kid....because it was dangerous. From a club perspective...maybe put the club in disrepute but seriously nowhere as bad as putting lives at danger....again a police issue.

I felt so uncomfortable listening to the media yesterday. No bloody respect!!

Port supporters must have an extraordinarily high opinion of themselves and their club. For 4 seasons the media and the national media have treated them as their little darlings with nothing but positive press continually rating everything they do well above the Crows while at the same time absolutely smashing the crows every chance they got. Yet, some ******* player drink drives and the media are critiqued for asking questions about the club and where were the front page spreads about about Johncock and Thompsons indiscretions. Like WTF is that??? Reality at Port mustn't exist.

It's not dissimilar to when movie stars complain because people stop them in the streets and ask for an autograph or film them when they are lying drunk in the gutter

Its not kids being kids, its a douche being a douche. 99% of 18-21yo are fully productive members of society who are working hard to earn a living. So this argument about too much pressure on young kids in the AFL is silly. Do people think Med / Vet school would be any easier? Year 12 is consistently suggested as way to much pressure for 17yo. So yeah an an 18yo highly paid AFL footballer trumps them all.....please.

Honest truth - 2 reasons:
(i) from a holistic view I don't like spin doctoring from any source nor the MSM
(ii) more specifically, I hate Port Power (as distinct from the old PAFC RIP 1996), and i despise KT & Kochhead and their spin and propaganda and their media persona.

hmm and maybe also a (iii) it is a normal reaction to sink the boots into your few real supporters just as you mob do when the boot is on the other foot. (Although our Club has yet to reach your club's lofty heights of protecting rapists and paying off people. )

Remember that you and I are the reason the cameras are snapping and the journos are scribbling. It is to feed our personal hunger for this type of thing. Wrongly or rightly it sells stories.

I do find it odd that because a kid can kick a footy and chooses to follow his dream has to be suddenly put on a peddlestool and be a perfect citizen. He earns more money than us so we demand that he lives a certain way. The fact this is impossible becomes irrelevant in this discussion....because if it could be done it would be done. Time and time again these "stars" show they are human, and humans are dumb and make mistakes at different times for different reasons. How dare they!!

You want to see a role model? See how the club as an organisation and community handle this situation....and how Impey learns from this experience. That speaks more volumes for mine and has a much bigger influence.

But I respect your thoughts, I just don't personally agree.

Also it is a big deal if any kid was to do that. It is beyond a simple error of judgement imo. Someone could have easily been injured or killed.
