Draft Review 2016 - Revisiting the 2016 AFL Draft

Griffin Logue from Freo is getting better every game.

Crazy depth in this draft with an elite top 4 in Simpkin, McCluggage, Taranto and McGrath (McGrath just behind the first three but making big steps this year)

Bar the final against West Coast McGrath hasn’t had the dominant games of the others only dominant quarters so can understand people rating the other 3 higher.

Drafted him in DT this year and no one had heard of him. It’s fun reminding them at the moment
Told a mate at work to put him in his SuperCoach at the start of the year, should have done it myself 😡

I couldn’t trust Worsfold to actually back in the youth, hell even McGrath playing in the guts still surprises me

Still not putting Parish in there though 😔

Ridley making a late charge into people’s top 20 I think, been superb so far this year

Almost top 10 the way he is going.

Probably the most improved player in the league right now.

What was the reason Ridley didn’t play much last year? Injury or just refining his game at VFL level?

I remember a few (AFL) games last year he got a bit of it, but was usually taking conservative options and slowed Essendon down on transition.

He’s definitely pretty composed and skilful.

Tried him in other positions in the VFL and chose to play Francis and Gleeson ahead of him in the AFL. We have intercept marking 3rd talls galore when you throw in Zerk-Thacther into the mix as well.

Far too composed and im sure with his height there was some inside mid experiment on the cards.

Good to see ridley, redman and francis getting game time this year. Theyre the future of our backline

There's the story of him going to Melbourne as part of the AFL Academy training 2 week programme as a bottom ager with Paul Roo's in 2015.

Roo's is quoted as saying he would of played him that weekend if he was able to given how well he went in match simulation training.

The leg break set him back a few years, but he's about to deliver on his potential by the looks of things.

He will be North's next captain, common knowledge at the club and they are already preparing the handover in a year or two.
I wouldn't. We gave cotchin the captaincy around a similar age and the pressure ruined him. Similarly look at what happened to trengove at Melbourne.

1. Hugh McCluggage
2. Tim Taranto
3. Jy Simpkin
4. Andrew McGrath
5. Rowan Marshall
6. Ollie Florent
7. Tom Stewart
8. Cameron Zurhaar
9. Sam Petreski-Seton
10. Jarrod Berry
11. Brandan Parfitt
12. Harry Perryman
13. Todd Marshall
14. Nick Larkey
15. Ben Ainsworth
16. Luke Ryan
17. Jack Henry
18. Jack Bowes
19. Tim English
20. Shai Bolton

This is a superb draft. Lots of potentially excellent players missing out - Setterfield, Scrimshaw, Powell-Pepper, Hayward, Witherden, Long, Fisher, Lipinski, Brown, Darcy, Battle, Cox, Young, Rioli (if he can get off his drugs ban), Graham, Narkle, Lewis, Ronke......

Did it on a mix of proven form and upside. Realistically though apart from the Top 3/4 the order is in significant flux.....
I didnt realise marshall was from this draft.
What an awesome year for talent

Great year for North after the consecutive disasters that were 2014 and 2015, only player on the list from those drafts which included something like four second rounders is McKay who has no footy sense. Simpkin #12, Larkey #73 and Zurhaar #11 RD.

Easy to miss, he was a 21 year old who went pick 10 in the rookie draft. Was overlooked from 2014 onwards

True, but what's the value in risking it? Zeibell surely has 3 years left and then give it to Simpkin at 23-25 or so when he is ready.

I am willing to bet my house Ziebell won't be captain of North next year.

Obvious choice is Cunnington for the next few years.

whoever it is, i dont think a 23 year old should be leading a club unless they are extremely exceptional. simpkin may very well be a very good player but i doubt he is that exceptional.

Agreed.

I think T.English coming good is based on more hope than reality at this point. Atm he’s a poor tap ruckman doesn’t follow up his work at stoppages

He needs to improve his tap work, but he has shown the last two weeks how good he can be.

He got 22 disposals last week and tonight, not sure any other ruckman in the league has got 22 disposals in a game this year? He is taking his marks now, is becoming very effective around the ground and has really good skills for a guy his size.

I think the taps are always going to be an issue, but the big thing he needs to fix in his game before reaching the next level is his set shots. Missed a few the last couple of games that he should have nailed.

Did manage 5 hitouts to advantage tonight though, which is better than he usually gets
