Draft Review 2016 - Revisiting the 2016 AFL Draft

If you asked me at the start of this year, I'd have said this draft was a shocker for North. Now, I'd say you guys came out of it arguably better than any other club. Some of the best hauls, in my opinion, were:

Brisbane - McCluggage, Berry, Witherden
Fremantle - Logue, Darcy, Cox, Ryan
Geelong - Parfitt, Stewart, Ratugolea
North - Simpkin, Larkey, Zurhaar
Richmond - Bolton, Graham, Garthwaite
Western Bulldogs - English, Lipinski, Young

There's also a bunch of great bargain picks from various other clubs. Rioli (52), Lewis (76), Battle (39), Ronke was alright (rookie 17)
One of the few noticeable draft years where most clubs did really well.

Lipinski has really come on in the back half of the year. Wasn't sure what to make of him before that, but is playing really good footy. English and Young always showed signs, at least to me anyway.

Marshall is going to be moving up those lists now. Has lost both parents in separate preseasons so this was his first uninterrupted preseason I believe. Probably the in form chf in the comp after 2 rounds.
Yeah and he is going to be lucky this week taking on freo. the dockers are missing both Alex Pearce and Joel Hamling

Much focus for us will be on McGrath, being the number 1 pick.
But gotta say. I was pumped we got Ridley on the night and he's looking a nice little pick up for a 2nd rounder (for once for us).

Tidy skills, good decision making and pretty good defensively.

Was a bit of discussion how we should have taken Witherden instead of Ridley and it looked likely in the short term but maybe not now for the long term and Ridley is a long way from the finished product aswell.

who is back with cox? I don’t think Cox would be a good matchup with Marshall from your POV. Probably logue if he takes kpps?
Didnt realise Marhsall was this draft, I'm really looking forward to seeing Cox/Logue take on Dixon/Marshall, just to see how they are travelling

Pretty sure if you had taken Witherden, we were taking Ridley.

It’s going to be interesting to see where McGrath vs McCluggage vs Taranto vs Simpkin sits by the end of the year.

McGrath and Simpkin both look like having big years.

The other two had theirs last year, obviously Taranto is out atm.

We’ve done pretty darn well in this draft with Simpkin, Larkey and Zurhaar considering we missed on our two second rounders.

Simpkin ? Really lol. It's only been 2 games. He is gonna need a much bigger body of work before we can even talk about him being compared to the other three.

I recall him having an impressive purple patch last season as well. That being said once you stray from the top 3 picks you can also throw in Florent and Berry as quality mids

As for the comparison between the four I’m hoping that McGrath speed and athleticism can set him apart from the others.
