Re Fogarty/Bonar, we shouldn't be so afraid of taking a risk at pick 10 when none of the available mids are exactly 'safe' options themselves.
That being said, hell no to Fogarty.

Bonar's had 2 Knee Reconstructions? If so pass
Well in that case get him inPretty sure the first reco was botched/didn't take so they had to come back and fix it. Not sure if that counts as 1 or 2 recos... maybe we split the difference and call it 1.5.

Too big a risk in my opinion. Especially with pick 10.Pretty sure the first reco was botched/didn't take so they had to come back and fix it. Not sure if that counts as 1 or 2 recos... maybe we split the difference and call it 1.5.
Jack Higgins for me if available, does everything well, can start his career as a forward. Therefore giving us a mid with pick three and a forward with 10. Just like SOS wanted.
If we go Rayner with pick 3 (hope not) I can see us going a Coffield or Brayshaw with pick 10.
Left field option could be Hayes, has Peter Wright potential.
I don't like the chances of Coffield or Brayshaw still being there at 10.
Thought I'd do this as an exercise to get a better feel for who we may get at pick ten...
Stephenson - can't see anyway he makes it to us at 10. HIGHLY UNLIKELY
Brayshaw - see above
Coffield - see's himself as more of a halfback but capable of playing on all three lines. Very good pace and kick, I could see him as a Simpson replacement ie. defensive wingman. POSSIBLE
Constable - looks like a solid pick, but huge queries on his pace and having Cripps and Kennedy already we may be looking for someone with more speed. UNLIKELY
Higgins - another solid pick who lacks pace and standout qualities, like Constable we already have similar types (small fwd/mids) and if we had a late first would be a great pick. UNLIKELY
Brander - SOS has stated we are after mids and forwards, but I can't see it being another tall forward option. Can play back but we all know we're fully stocked here. UNLIKELY
Bonar - could be anything, I know his agility is great and his tackling, but will he be a mid? Can play up forward, but is he a noted goal kicker? lots of unknowns atm that I see as high risk. POSSIBLE
Clark - another halfback with good speed and skills, but has demonstrated the ability to play inside the contest. Imo a better fit than Coffield, as I think he can be a genuine inside/outside mid. POSSIBLE
DFogarty - not too sure what to make of the Fog, for me he sits in the Bonar camp as high risk. I could only see us taking him if we got a genuine mid a 3. POSSIBLE
Hayes - can't see us taking a ruck at 10, nothing more to say. UNLIKELY
Balta - see Brander. UNLIKELY
O'Brien - fits a need as a midfielder with elite endurance and foot skills, but queries on whether he's too outside?? POSSIBLE
OK, so by my reasoning there's only 5 names as a genuine chance for us. Drill a little further and you can maybe remove another 2 (Bonar/Fog) that could be high risk picks that we may not be willing to take. That leaves us with Coffield, Clark and O'Brien, now if we are picking the best player out of those 3, personally I'd be picking Clark. But anyway you all can make of it what you will, was bored and this was on my mind!
Also if Fog and Bonar both go before 10, plus maybe a tall .. Naughton? Maybe a big slider might come our way, but at this stage it looks like a choice of..
- COFFIELD
- BONAR
- CLARK
- FOGARTY
- O'BRIEN
I've been tallying phantom draft/ranked lists from the more reputable sources. After 10 of them it's looking like this for the first round:
1. Rayner (2.2 av rank)
2. LDU (2.5)
3. Dow (2.8)
4. Cerra (4.2)
5. Stephenson (5.2)
6. Brayshaw (7.0)
7. Coffield (8.5)
8. Naughton (8.8)
9. Fogarty (9.9)
10. Bonar (11.1)
11. Brander (11.5)
12. Higgins (12.7)
13. Clark (13.0)
14. Hayes (13.5)
15. Constable (14.0)
16. Balta (15.4)
17. O'Brien (16.7)
Who knows when Fogarty is going to be picked, I've seen a reasonable spread of positions for him. Same goes for Naughton, Brander and Hayes.. all over the shop. It does read like there's a definite top 3, then Cerra, then Stephenson, then Brayshaw, then Coffield, then it's anyone's guess for the order of the next 10. I'm hoping over the coming weeks this data starts to sort itself out and we see a few more patterns/trends emerge in the 8-17 range.
I keep seeing this but I don't understand the notion after a slightly deeper look.
Saints need an elite general defender, an elite key position option and elite pace and kicking through midfield. While they have some of those options developing on their list, they need more insurance and I don't think Bonar really fits those categories better than most of the top 15 candidates that will still be on the board. Can see them taking one of Coffield, Brander or Naughton and whichever one of Stephenson, Cerra, Dow or Brayshaw is still on the board.
Bonar is more brute force and a lead-up forward option, so just piles on top of what they already have in abundance. The teams stopping us from nabbing him are the Pies and the Dogs, depending on how they see their midfield mix and other candidates at that point in the pool.
EDIT: Hunter Clark might be an option too if they believe in his athletic tools.
The Saints are still in roughly the same position as they were last year, which is if their 20-24 bracket can step up, they are in the top 8.Saints need to rebuild again
IMO whoever we pick at pick 10 will have absolutely NOTHING to do with "needs" or whoever we already drafted at 3.
We will pick the best available acc to our draftlist. Who gives a shit if we end up with one too many inside mids or whatever.
We'll go best available and minimise the risk of the pick being a fail. SOS has already said this, he'll only look at "needs" with later picks.
It will all come down to how we compile our draftlist.
Fine, aside from key defenders we'll go best available with 3 and 10. Happy??don't believe the standard rollout to the press "we'll take the best available player" SOS has already stated that he is after "players which will improve our attack and midfield". It's as the worst poker player in history (Shane Rogers) said "we'll take the best player for CARLTON". Could you honestly say that if the best available player at one of our picks was a KPD that we would pick them??
Fine, aside from key defenders we'll go best available mid with 3 and 10. Happy??
Yes Fogarty seems to be the hardest one to place this year, ranked anywhere from 1-15 odd. The picks from 5-9 I think will be the most interesting, whether or not Freo and the filth go for talls at 5 & 6 and the StKilda picks, likely to be one safe and one with x-factor. Could we end up with something like this...
1. LDU - best mid
2. CERRA - replacement for Weller
3. RAYNER - forward line game changer
4. DOW - probably better for them than Stephenson
5. NAUGHTON - local boy
6. BRANDER - tall help, midfield is stacked
7. STEPHENSON - x-factor
8. BRAYSHAW - sure thing
9. FOGARTY - Stringer replacement
Potentially these are who's left to choose from,
Bonar
Clark
Coffield
Constable
Higgins
O'Brien
or if the talls don't go early Bonar and Coffield look the most likely to move into the top 9. I still like Clark though, from all reports had a stellar end to the year and was previously rated in the top few. Excellent kick off both sides and cracks in hard and wins his own ball.

I think that picks 7-9 will shape who we are after at pick 10 big time. It is even possible that Rayner could be taken in the first 2 picks depending on the clubs trusting that he would not rack off after his contract is up. I actually hope that we take Dow ahead of him as we need more pace and run in the middle of the ground imo. Brayshaw is moving up the charts faster than a Beatles single so he may do a McGrath/Taranto from last year with the Lions a possibility.......once again the interstate teams just have to trust the interviews they had with these kids as to whether they hang around or not. Dow is not keen to move interstate apparently even though the Lions like him. Like you said I think Freo take Naughton pick 5 and Col takes Brander or Balta with 6, but after that the Saints and the WB are a toss up, although you would think the Saints pick 8 is likely to be a KPD as they are quite thin down there. Would love any of D.Fogarty/Bonar or Coffield to be available at pick 10, especially if we take Dow with him being a smaller mid..........Not that keen on Constable with us already having Crippa and Kennedy as strong but slower types in the middle. Fogarty/Bonar can both play forward and Coffield as a running Def/Mid as he has plenty of toe. I have never been that keen on "best available" policy because you can end up with a list full of same types..........as in what we had during the Ratten/Wayne Hughes period........we had too many flankers and not a good balance at all.Yes Fogarty seems to be the hardest one to place this year, ranked anywhere from 1-15 odd. Can you really see us drafting another ruck?
