TOP 2017 NAB AFL DRAFT PROSPECTS:

Jaidyn Stephenson (11 games, 23 goals, ave. 14 disposals and six marks in 2016): “Jaidyn’s a really dynamic half forward. He’s powerful, has great speed, a really nice feel for the game and can win a match off his own boot. He’s in the AFL Academy.”

Sam Hayes (16 games, ave. 12 disposals, three marks and 22 hitouts in 2016): “Sam’s a mobile ruckman with a basketball background. He’s got beautiful hands in the ruck and hits to advantage really well. He can also take a mark around the ground and be dangerous when he goes forward. He’s still growing – he’s just hit 204cm – and has a fair way to go in terms of his physical development and ability to cover the ground, but he continues to show improvement every year. He’s an AFL Academy member and was All Australian last year.”

Joel Garner (six games, four goals, ave. 15 disposals, four marks and four tackles in 2016): “Joel’s really strong in terms of his attack over the football, good in the air for his size and dangerous when he goes forward. He’s a real natural footballer. We’ll probably try to push him through the midfield and wing a bit more this year. He’s an amazing leader and person to have around the football club, and he’s just become the first indigenous prefect in the history of Scotch College.”

Tom North (10 games, eight goals, ave. 20 disposals and six tackles in 2016): “Tom’s a strong-bodied midfielder with great power and penetration in his kicking. He would have won our best-and-fairest last year if he didn’t break his ankle halfway through the season – he was leading the count by the length of the Flemington straight. He’s been working really diligently and we’re trying to get him up for Round 1.”

Harrison Nolan (16 games, ave. eight disposals in 2016): “Harrison’s very much in the same key-defensive mould as (Eastern’s 2016 Sydney draftee) Jack Maibaum. He’s really competitive, a great runner for his size and he’s just got a real desire and competitiveness about him. He’ll probably play key back but we may look to get him in the midfield at certain times to offer a different dynamic. He played all his junior footy as a forward before we sent him down back last year and he did a great job.”

Trent Mynott (seven games, five goals, ave. 17 disposals and four tackles in 2016): “Trent’s a beautiful natural footballer with great vision and is really damaging with his possessions by foot. He plays like a Shaun Burgoyne (of Hawthorn), who can have only 10 or 15 disposals but still have a really big influence on the game.”

Jackson Ross (nine games, five goals, ave. 14 disposals in 2016): “Jackson’s a former elite-level tennis player who only really came into the program two years ago. He’s still very raw and skinny but has a really great physical make-up that’s just going to take a bit of time. His athletic ability is very good, so he can play in the midfield, on a wing, at half back or half forward. He’s a real utility in every sense of the word.”

POTENTIAL SURPRISE PACKETS:

“There’s three boys we’ve found through local football who I think are in it up to their ears in terms of being able to play at the level:

Ryley Stoddart (not on list in 2016): “Ryley’s a real dynamic half forward flanker. He’s got an amazing vertical leap and he’s a real bouncing, energetic type of player.”

Josiah Duncan (not on list in 2016): “Josiah reads the ball really well in flight. He’s a great overhead mark.”

Connor Edwards (not on list in 2016): “Connor didn’t make the cut as a 16-year-old and played some senior local footy last year. He has a willingness to take the game on, run and carry and bounce. He sets the play up from half back.”

CONFIRMED OVER-AGE PLAYERS:

Jordan Lynch (pictured - nine games, five goals, ave. 10 disposals in 2016): “Jordan played with injury last year. I’m convinced he’s an AFL footballer, he’s just had no luck with his body. He’s a really powerful, nuggety ball-winner who can then hurt teams with his speed on the outside and the penetration and power of his kicking. He’ll play predominantly through the midfield and also as that dangerous fourth or fifth forward.”

Tom Hollins (nine games, ave. 10 disposals in 2016): “Tom’s missed pretty much the last two years with shoulder and ankle injuries. He’s very raw and skinny but has really good speed for a kid of 190cm. We’ll hopefully play him through a wing this year; he loves to run and carry so hopefully we see that in his game.”

Jasper Rouget (no games in 2016): “Jasper’s been playing senior local footy since he was 15. He’s really competitive, loves getting his hands dirty and a great kick for a kid of 198cm. He just loves the physical contest. He’s still a fair way off in terms of the footy stuff because it’s his first time in, but he could be one to watch.”

TOP 2017 NAB AFL DRAFT PROSPECTS:

Noah Balta (eight games, 18 goals, ave. 12 disposals and nine hitouts in 2016): “Noah’s a key forward with a strong mark and strong kick. He’s an aggressive player and he plays a lot on instinct. He’s dramatically improved his footy over the last seven or eight months and was elevated into the AFL Academy last year. He can probably play in defence and in the ruck but I think AFL clubs want to see him predominantly as a power forward. At 193/194cm he could nearly play as an on-baller, which we did with him a couple of times last year.”

Brad Bernacki (18 games, ave. 15 disposals and four tackles in 2016): “Brad’s an inside midfielder. His attack on the ball would be one of his main strengths and he’s a good leader and good communicator. He did some good things last year and I think if he displays some of that form then he could push his way into the Vic Metro squad. He’s a baby top-ager – a November birth.”

Ben Caluzzi (pictured - 14 games, ave. 17 disposals in 2016): “Ben is a strong-bodied inside midfielder who’s an elite kick off both sides of his body. He played a bit of half forward, half back and midfield last year. He’s a lot fitter than he was in 2016, so he’s giving himself the best opportunity. Two years ago he was in the Vic Metro squad and didn’t make the team but I think he can really push for that this year.”

Daniel Hanna (four games, ave. six disposals in 2016): “Daniel’s had a lot of injury trouble, so after playing for Vic Metro and coming pretty close to AFL Academy selection in 2015 he missed all bar four games last year. He’s 197cm and quite light at the moment so he needs to work on his strength, but he marks well and I think he’s going to be an interesting prospect. He’s another baby top-ager – he’s not 18 until the end of November.”

CONFIRMED OVER-AGE PLAYERS:

Aidan Tilley (11 games, ave. 11 disposals in 2016): “A few AFL clubs looked at Aidan last year as a rookie prospect so they were keen to see him play again. He’s been through all our squads, but as a private-school player last year he was only available at certain times. We’re giving him an opportunity to play more consistently with us this year. He’s predominantly a key defender but can go through the midfield, so we’ll give him an opportunity to play in a few positions and see how he goes.”

Jean-Luc Velissaris (nine games, six goals, ave. 15 disposals in 2016): “Last year was Jean-Luc’s first in any of our programs. He was also a private-school player so we have him in the system full-time this year. He’s a midfielder with really good pace and a really good kick. A couple of times last year he went forward and kicked a few goals. He had two or three very good games and just needs to repeat that consistently.”

Rhylee West: Bottom-age son of Scott (324 AFL games for the Western Bulldogs from 1993-2008). “Rhylee’s a hard inside midfielder who’s in the AFL Academy.”

Noah Balta is going to be a gun, another favourite of mine this year - along with Darcy Fogarty and Cam Rayner.

I like Fogarty the most at this stage but I see enough top 10 value in Brander and Rayner at this stage for sure. Balta I have just below these three. Stephenson I would love to see in the middle at times this season just to showcase any versatility. If he does well there then he might push right up into the top 8-10. Hayes/Coleman-Jones/Ballenden/Crossley are talls I have just below those guys. Worpel, O'Brien, Hunter Clark more mid types.

Agree with all of the above.

Have you or anyone else seen tom de koning play before? I've heard hes a really good contested mark, not much mention of his athleticism or other skills.

TOP 2017 NAB AFL DRAFT PROSPECTS:

Aiden Domic (pictured - 11 games, ave. 13 disposals and four marks in 2016): “Aiden’s a player AFL clubs really like not just because of his skill assets but also his endurance base. He’s a hard-running midfielder who uses the ball very well but also has a very high work rate. He played the majority of games for us last year as a half back flanker/winger but he’ll go on-ball this year. He’s an indigenous boy who’s gone through the Kickstart programs and played Vic Country U16s as well.”

Jordan Johnston (15 games, 26 goals, ave. 11 disposals in 2016): “Jordan played some good TAC Cup footy last year and kicked a bag of seven goals against the Sandringham Dragons. He’s a small to medium forward and a bit of a jack-rabbit who likes jumping at the football, but he knows where the goals are as well. We’ll use him as a lead-up forward and on the ball this year to develop other parts of his game. Unfortunately he had an ankle injury late last year which he had operated on, so he’s done no pre-season and I don’t expect him to be playing in probably the first couple of rounds.”

POTENTIAL SURPRISE PACKET:

Dale Cox (not on list in 2016): “We had Dale’s cousin (and subsequent Brisbane draftee) Cedric Cox on our list last year. Dale moved down from Halls Creek earlier in 2017 and he’s a top-age player. He’s got really good leg speed and some good skills about him as well. We’re excited to see how he develops in a full-time TAC Cup environment and if an AFL club will be excited by what they see. He’s similar to Cedric in terms of his running capabilities and his speed at the moment.”

CONFIRMED OVER-AGE PLAYERS:

Lloyd Meek (15 games, seven goals, ave. 10 disposals, four tackles and 15 hitouts in 2016): “Lloyd was a Vic Country ruckman last year. We know ruckmen develop later and Lloyd’s grown since last season – he’s 202cm now – and he’s a bit thicker in the body as well. We just need him to make a bigger impact on games and be a bit more aggressive around the football, so that’s one thing he’s been working really hard on.”

Callan Wellings (16 games, ave. 22 disposals and five marks in 2016): “Callan was probably unlucky not to get an opportunity at the drafts last year, but he was injured for basically the first half of the year. Seeing him fully fit towards the end of 2016 was really encouraging for us. He’s working extremely hard on his contested football, and training with North Ballarat’s VFL team this pre-season has helped him with that. He’ll be a great leader for our football club and really show the younger boys in the program the required training level and attitude.”

Wait they aren't North Ballarat anymore? What is GWV, Greater Western Victoria?

Anyway, Aiden's my cousin and I'm really ****en pumped about his chances.

Draft him.

We absolutely suck at drafting brothers but tend to fare very well when drafting cousins (Dal Santo's cousin & Roughy's cousin are both premiership players;) )

I haven't seen him a lot but is one that I look forward to following this year. Interested to see how consistent he is, and where a club will take a chance on him. Often the skinnier tall forwards are harder to pick.

Lloyd is an SMW Rovers kid. Will be following him a bit this season along with the other Ararat and Stawell lads who made the squad.

Pretty sure Naish McRoberts is an over-ager but doubt he is on any club's radar. So not sure if you wanted to add him in or not.

Final squad was announced on Tuesday btw.

TOP 2017 NAB AFL DRAFT PROSPECTS:

“You can’t really go past the five players we’ve got in the AFL Academy:

Hunter Clark (12 games, ave. 16 disposals in 2016): “Hunter’s a medium-sized defender but he’s also shown he can play as an inside midfielder and he’s doing that really well at the moment in practice games. His strength as a back-line player is that he reads the ball so well and creates time and space, so he’s got plenty of time to make decisions. He’s very proficient on both sides of his body by foot and as brave as they come.”

Oscar Clavarino (seven games, ave. 10 disposals and three marks in 2016): “Oscar’s probably the no.1 key defender in the TAC Cup. He’s got some running ability and really good closing speed and he’s got the go-go-gadget arms so he can close down space in the air pretty quickly. His strength is that he’s probably actually better as a forward than as a defender – he played forward through our junior programs and for the Vic Country U16s. We’ve also played him on the wing as a bottom-ager for his learning, so I think he’s multi-purpose player and that’s why we rate him so highly.”

Luke Davies-Uniacke (two games in 2016): “Luke’s a beast of an inside midfielder. He’s probably similar to a (Richmond midfielder) Dustin Martin-style player and not far from a (Sydney on-baller) Luke Parker style. His clean hands are unique, his ability above his head and his body strength are his strengths. At the moment he’s a bit inhibited because of a shoulder reconstruction he had in November and he only recently started his program for the year. He’ll be fully ready to go by Round 1 though.”

Aaron Darling (16 games, six goals, ave. 11 disposals in 2016): “Aaron’s done an ACL, so we probably won’t get to see him play this year. He had the surgery done in December and they’re saying he’s ahead of schedule. I think he was the best kick in the draft and he’s a beast of a small inside midfielder. For a 179cm player, he hit the ball with power and he kicked it with power – similar to a (GWS midfielder) Dylan Shiel-type. The knock on his game was always going to be his fitness and his tank, but he’s going to get eight months to work on that now. His body should be ready to go by the Draft Combine when he’ll be able to show everyone his running capabilities, and I think he’s still in draft contention. He takes a new role now as an assistant midfield coach where he’ll sit with the players and go through vision.”

Tom De Koning (pictured - 11 games, 17 goals, ave. five disposals and 10 hitouts in 2016): “Tom’s now basically sitting on 200cm and is a genuine forward with really good hands and a really sweet kicking style. He also has the ability to go into the ruck but we’ll play him mostly as a key forward. He’s maybe a little bit behind in his development because he’s a tall skinny type, but he’s building his frame – he’s put on six to seven kilos since we’ve come back for the 2017 pre-season.”

POTENTIAL SURPRISE PACKET:

Aiden Bonar (two games in 2016): “Aiden’s coming back from a second ACL operation. He returned after his first one last year but it didn’t hold so they had to re-do it. He’ll be ready to go around May/June. I rate him as high as our players who are already in the AFL Academy program. He’s 190cm and nearly 90kg and he’s just a beast – there’s not an ounce of fat on him. He can play as an inside midfielder, he can play forward and he can play back. If he gets his opportunity, I think he’ll emerge late like (Dandenong’s Melbourne draftee) Liam Hulett did in 2015.”

CONFIRMED OVER-AGE PLAYERS:

Reece Piper (12 games, ave. 12 disposals in 2016): “As a bottom-ager, Reece nearly broke his back by hitting a fence and only played about two minutes of TAC Cup football. He came on as a top-ager but he’s actually born on the 30th of December, so even though we’ve listed him as a 19-year-old, two days later he’d be an 18-year-old. He’s just a late developer. He’s by far our best kick – a 60-metre kick. He played as a small defender at Vic Country last year but he’s going to play as an inside midfielder in 2017 because we think that’s the style of position he needs to play.”

Bailey Morrish (18 games, ave. 13 disposals in 2016): “I’m not sure why Bailey didn’t get taken in the drafts last year. Every AFL club we’re talking to at the moment is saying they were surprised but they just didn’t have enough picks. He’s a genuine half back flanker, but we’re going to play him up around the ball a bit more and throw him forward this year. He’s matured off the field and is training the house down at the moment.”

Tom Murphy (10 games, 12 goals, ave. 10 disposals in 2016): “Tom had interrupted pre-seasons at 17 and 18, and had glandular fever last year but came back and still did enough to get an invitation to the State Combine. He’s a genuine third forward but we’ve actually played him as an inside midfielder in practice games and he doesn’t look out of place. He’s got AFL attributes in every area, it’s just about getting his body right.”

Tom Roberts (four games, ave. six disposals and 11 hitouts in 2016): “Tom’s a 204cm ruckman. As a 16-year-old he was hovering around the 125kg mark but he’s just clicked under the 110kg mark. He’s a work in progress. He’s a really good tap ruckman but we believe he’s a forward and he understands playing in the forward line better. He’ll get first hands to the ball and he jumps at the ball now because he’s lost that weight he had.”

Mason De Wit (14 games, ave. 13 disposals and three marks in 2016): “Mason was really close at the drafts last year. Early in the season he suffered a meniscus tear but didn’t have an operation, came back and just played with it and still had the ability to make the Young Guns Game. The knee operation may have put AFL clubs off. He’s a defender/wingman who can even play ruck at 193cm. He’s also played in two U19 grand finals as a key forward, kicking multiple goals in both games.”

TOP 2017 NAB AFL DRAFT PROSPECTS:

Jack Higgins (nine games, 20 goals, ave. 29 disposals and seven marks in 2016): “Jack’s a member of the AFL Academy program. I think his record speaks for itself and we’re really excited to see where he can get to this year. He played through the midfield and forward line last year and he’ll probably play similar roles for us this year. The big thing for us is to see him step up his leadership. He certainly leads in terms of the way he goes about his training – he’s as good as we’ve got here – but what I’m looking for is for him to drag some of the other boys up to a similar standard. He’s a pretty special little player but he works hard and gets results from the hard work he puts in.”

Toby Wooller (11 games, 12 goals, ave. 15 disposals and eight marks in 2016): “Toby played as a key forward last season and acquitted himself really well. This year he’s actually finished Year 12 so he becomes a full-time player at the Chargers and he’s one I see as a definite leader amongst our group. I think we’ll play him as a forward but we might throw him back for a period of time to show his versatility. I actually wouldn’t mind seeing him go through the midfield at some point too – I think he’s got it in him.”

Riley Jones (pictured - 15 games, ave. 10 disposals and three marks in 2016): “Riley was a tall defender for us last year and played on some pretty handy types and was able to do some really good jobs. He’d pretty much never played down back before so I think he learned a lot about the game. This year we’ll look to give him opportunities up forward and I’m also thinking we can give him opportunities through the midfield. He’s a really smooth mover, a good user of the ball and has a good set of hands as well.”

Noah Answerth (seven games, ave. 13 disposals and four tackles in 2016): “Noah’s a defender who’s very hard at the ball, kicks the ball really well, has some terrific speed and is a real competitor. I really enjoy seeing the way he goes about things. He was one I thought we really missed in the preliminary final loss to the Bushrangers – when (subsequent GWS draftee) Lachlan Tiziani got hold of us (kicking six goals) I thought Noah would have been a good match-up for him in the air and on the ground. He’s the brother of (2015 TAC Cup Grand Final best-on-ground medallist) Kade Answerth.”

POTENTIAL SURPRISE PACKET:

Matthew Day (not on list in 2016): “Matthew was involved in some of our development programs going back a couple of years but has been a really keen basketballer and played some high-level basketball. He played some school footy at Marcellin last year that we were really impressed by and his work in our pre-season so far has been really pleasing. He’s very good in traffic, has silky skills, covers the ground well and is just a really smooth mover. He’s a top-ager and I’m really excited to see where he can get to.”

CONFIRMED OVER-AGE PLAYERS:

Louis Cunningham (14 games, ave. 22 disposals and six marks in 2016): “From all reports Louis was close to being rookie-listed last year. He played predominantly down back for us last year but we’re keen to give him exposure in all parts of the ground this year, so we’re looking for him to play more of a midfield role. We’re keen for him to get some exposure at VFL level in the early part of the year as well.”

Ned Reeves (10 games, ave. 10 disposals and 23 hitouts in 2016): “Ned’s a developing ruckman who measures in at about 208cm at the moment and he’s starting to fill out. We were really pleased with the progress he showed last year. He’s shown an ability to go forward, take some marks and kick some goals, and his ruck work was terrific. He’s recently had a hip clean-out so he’s a little bit away from playing.”

Callum Searle (10 games, ave. 18 disposals in 2016): “A bit like Louis Cunningham, Callum played a lot across half back last year. We’re really keen to see him go through the midfield too and I think he’ll be one that really benefits from being in the one place for the whole season – last year he had school footy, club footy and some Vic Metro commitments as well.”

Daniel Stanford (seven games, 10 goals, ave. 11 disposals and five marks in 2016): “Daniel’s a taller defender who’s had limited opportunities with us, effectively due to injury and school commitments. He played a couple of finals with us late last year and was a really good performer. In terms of body size he’s probably not too dissimilar to a top-age player, but he’s developing nicely and putting in a lot of hard work.”

Tom O’Sullivan (one game in 2016): “Tom’s battled a lot of injuries over pretty much the last couple of years. He had some real issues with stress fractures in his back last year and in my opinion he would have played in our finals series if he had have been fit. Hopefully he can get a good crack at it this year. He’s a midfielder but I think he can also play forward and kick some goals for us.”

Calling Fogarty as the no. 1 pick this far out... But claiming Wooller as my guy. Can see him having a big year.

D. Fogarty is a very special player. He's that good I'd be willing to give our first this year and first next year + a player/second rounder to trade up to nab him...

Fogarty rotating with Stringer and Bont through forward/midfield. Unstoppable!

Good question. I have no idea. I've also been wanting to know who are the indigenous talent in our zone?
