It's interesting this year's draft. No one knows who will be pick 1. Last year McCLuggage was almost a certainty for pick 1 at this point. Would love to trade down like we did last year with GWS...
Would be nice if St Kilda had someone they were very keen on, we could do a 1 and a later pick for 3 and 13 type deal perhaps

Edit - lots to play out in terms of ladder position of course

Endurance testing relative to the past will almost be impossible to gauge this year at the combine with the changes they are making. Will be interesting to see what the new normal is in the new tests

From the little I've seen I'm pretty keen on LDU, Stephenson and Ballenden with our first 3 picks.
Luke Power announced today that Charlie Spargo was being withdrawn from the championship due to injury. He was excellent as an under age performer in last year's TAC finals, and though small , is a terrific footballer, smart and courageous, and can play forward, onball and wing....much like Caleb. If he now slips down the order,he would be a great pick up depending on where he lands.Dad played a few for the Bears.

Evening All, I don't know if this article was shared on here but I found it interesting that Luke Power specifically highlighted to Ballenden "what are you doing when you don't have the ball? How are you contributing?"

This is what impressed me the most on Sunday - he demonstrated that he actually has a genuine footy IQ. He was always well positioned in defence and knew when to leave his man to spoil. He also positioned himself very well behind play, often placing himself exactly where WA wanted to go with their 'get out' kick (hence the high number of intercept marks).

I don't see him as a long term KPD but I think he will be better for the experience, and while I haven't contributed to this board for a while (got frustrated with the negativity) I have been keeping an eye on the draft thread. I think a lot of posters have been a bit harsh on him and haven't taken in to account that he hasn't been in teams conducive to performing well as a key forward.

Watching the Allies live at the ground, I cannot emphasise enough how difficult it must be to be a KPF in that team and play well!!

I completely agree with many posters that Midfield pace and ball use is a priority, but if we don't match a bid for this kid we will live to regret it, of that I have no doubt. I would happily give up the Port pick to get him, and use picks 1, 18 and any possible PP to get midfielders in.

Great post....for what it's worth,I have warmed to him after last week. Very impressed he took the direction from Luke so well.

I really like Ballenden and if he continues to impress that could lower our chances of taking brander who is a legitimate No.1 contestant. LDU, Rayner and Higgins all really excite me as well, especially LDU & Rayner. LDU oozes class and Rayner has that X-factor. Will be interesting to see who ends up as no.1 favourite.
Anyone else think we should maybe pursue a trade for a pick in next years draft which has been called a possible super draft?

I doubt any club that possibly projects to have a top 10 pick in next years draft would consider trading their 2018 pick.

If St Kilda wanted to trade Hawthorns pick in this years draft for our 2018 pick, we would have to consider it consider it. Especially if the Hawthorn pick is pick 2, so we could draft both LDU and Rayner.

Brisbane trade Ports 2017 first round pick and our 2018 first rounder to St Kilda for Hawthorns 2017 first round pick and St Kilda's 2018 first round pick.

:drunk: No, no way we consider this on any level. I'm really happy how we are tracking with our younger players and the resignings etc, but let's be honest we are miles bottom at the moment. With our list profile this is unlikely to change in the next 12 months.

Why would we trade for Hawks pick this year when we are likely to hold pick 1 next year in what everyone is projecting to be a superdraft? No one stands out this year, so unless something miraculous happens in the next 10 weeks, it's a priority that we hold on to our (likely) pick 1 next year.

lol was just shooting the breeze and floating a scenario out there.

Just because there is no consensus number one player at the moment doesn't make the top of this years draft weak. Last year, the consensus number one player ended up being drafted third.

I'm as big on next years draft as anyone, but possibly for other reasons.

There's a lot of talk that the AFL could introduce live pick and player trading on draft night. If Brisbane had pick 1 in next years draft, you could realistically see teams offering a fair bit to trade with Brisbane.

You look at most of the top rated players in next years draft and they are KPP's. The King twins and Lukosius. We don't need really need a KPP. I'm on record as being a big Rankine fan, but do you draft Rankine with the first pick? A couple of the other top rated kids in next years draft are northern academy and next generation academy kids, so while very talented, are already spoken for.

The chance to draft the top two kids in this years draft and get them in to our system would have to be weighed seriously.

Of course how could I have forgotten the greatest player produced by the club. :)

And yet, still don't get a mention? lol

*edit:
Oh, draft thread. All things considered I would actually be quite comfortable in considering Jack Higgins with our first pick [with an interview where he reflected positively to moving north].

Could also take in to account, there is every chance next years first round is stronger and deeper than this years first round, so St Kilda's pick next year could net a higher rated player than Port's pick this year. Maybe Sam Walsh is available with St Kilda's pick next year.

Also take in to account we're not matching a bid on Ballenden with Port's pick, but rather our second round pick. So over all we are adding higher end talent to our list in such a scenario.

I think it would only be a realistic trade, if a team was to offer two first rounders. I.e. saints give hawks pick and theirs this year, for what will essentially be Pick 1 next year. Even then, I'm still not a fan, it's a bit like that Melbourne trade. Pick 2 for Tyson and Salem. Pick 2 ends up being Josh Kelly, who is a beast. Same happened when Freo traded pick 1 for Trent Croad. Pick 1 ends up being Luke Hodge. Always wary trading picks from the top 3, because so often they turn out to be guns.

I know you have to use your next best pick when bidding but would that include ones you have traded for?

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, if we don't take Ballenden with any pick bar pick at top 3 (assuming we have pick 1-3) we are mad. I know I might sound like a fanboy right now, but he really was THAT GOOD on Sunday in a dreadful side.

We are still matching a bid for Ballenden. We're just using lower picks to do it.

I'd just rather get more "value" out of the Port pick.

Sorry but you said we wouldn't match a bid with port's pick. So we have to use our next pick regardless of origin when bidding yah? Ballenden will go before ports pick, clubs wont let him slip past that pick.
In my scenario above we traded Port's pick for St Kilda's 2018 first round pick.

So we're not matching a bid with the Port pick, but rather our second round pick, and more than likely our third round pick as well.

The grass isn't always greener. Why are ppl over-complicating things for no reason just focus on getting talent this year and worry about next year's draft next year.
