I voted for a new game plan.

My actual desire is to have our old game plan with some tweaks.

I think we need to take some more risk and play with more variety. This may mean playing our old way 80% of the time and some different way(s) 20% of the time. For example, leave more forwards in front of the ball, try for an attacking clearance now and again (rather than something close in with our big bodied mids bullying the ball out), run the ball out of defence when there is an opening.

I also think our defensive structures were looking a little tired (they always looked tired against Hawthorn) so a bit of tweaking is needed there too.

I don't think we have to play like everyone else, but we have to defend well against current attacking structures and attack well against current defensive structures. It is a good thing to play differently to others.

*now where's that broken record I keep for these sort of threads*

We need to tweak the attacking style. Taking advantage of the turnover and making the fast break is fine for when it happens. But when it doesn't we need a Plan B for the slower attack, rather than "bomb it long to Pav". Since Pav is retired this would naturally result in an Out of Bounds on the Full each time. We need to use all our forward options, particularly make more use of the short options and leading targets to control the ball and manufacture a shot at goal, even if it's a running attempt.

We also need to stop trying to set up a perfect set shot from 15-30 m out each time and instead allow the ping from around 50, we've got a few mids that can kick that range easy. Stop doing the "disciplined team thing" and predictably kicking it to the "hot-spot" where the defenders can stifle it, and just have a bloody ping every now and again. I'd love to see Hilly kicking them from 55 on the run.

Your second para is like music to my ears.

Goals from outside the 50 arc are part of the new agenda of possibilities.
Kersten and Cam both big tonkers and if Yaz survives he's another one.
Half back to half forward transition stuff will be where we'll concentrate our efforts over the summer I'd say.
Then the Ape and the crumbers around the square and the coalition of jetskiers on the lead and spread.

I'll let Ross fine tune it.

How do you rate our potential for midfielder goals? I think we are quite dangerous and hope that the improvement of the forward line will allow the midfield to have an even greater impact. Multiple avenues to goal instigated by fast, long kicking, goal seeking mids.

You're all (except salim malik) forgetting...

Forgotten fred.
Accurate kicking and fast decision making from the backline launches counter attacking footy.
Retaining possession back and forth across the backline shifts the oppositions defensive zones around to create an escape play to beat their press ,so best get used to it.
However with the likes of Lachie Weller touted to play half-back, the stop-start-mark-assess-conservative-ball-retention-option-selected-under-game-plan-designed-for-low-skill-low-speed-team-gets options with the player capable of run and carry from defence with speed.
Jnr Hill's lungs make him an available option up the wing.Tabs big lungs and arms another.
So list changes make other game plans possible.
A young developing Tabs, out of form Ballas, aging but still potent Pav,skilled buzz Sonny and unfortunately impotent Chris Mayne didn't help quick fire counter attacking transition to score.
With better attacking player options and greater run, your structures can be more offensive on transition.
Unfortunately for Micky B. he won heaps of the pill and bled Purple but was too slow on the spread.
Ross Lyon is heading up a restump.
He'll bed this lot in then draft for the missing links at the end of the season.
Then we'll see.

I'm not into messiahs but people who slag Lyon want to look at his record and his lists.

Really curious to see how Weller and b.hill interchange position if Yarran is definitely out I like to see Langdon playing RHF , RM - b.hill and RHb- Weller .

LHF - Walter ,LM- s.hill , LHB - Croz / tucker .

A bit off topic but thought I would throw this out there. I know we didn't get the spoon but greater western Sydney and gold coast haven't always been around. Wonder what changed in the game plan for essendon ???

  • Essendon and Collingwood are the only teams to follow up a wooden spoon with a Grand Final appearance, in 190708 and 197677 respectively. Neither was victorious.
  • Essendon hold the record for the swiftest rise from wooden spoon to premiership, two seasons: they finished last in 1921 and won back-to-back premierships in 1923-24.
  • Melbourne and Fitzroy hold the record for the swiftest descent from premiership to wooden spoon, three seasons: Melbourne finished last in 1951 after winning the premiership in 1948, and Fitzroy laid partial claim to the 1916 wooden spoon after winning the premiership in 1913.

Should we take anything from Ibboston being voted close to best on ground in the Round 23 win against the Western Bulldogs by the umpires and the Fremantle Big Footy Voters.

Is it "you're only as good as your last game", or "that was your last game, you were good".

Ibbo remains on the list and so I'm not the only one who thinks he can bang in another bunch of good games.

Lifted for Pav. Not sure why he wasn't able to play like that the rest of the year? Slightly diff role in that game perhaps? Looks better when we're going well? Or just found a bit of extra motivation?

I thought Ibbo was quite good the last few weeks of 2016, but appalling early in the season. I have just been watching Round 2 in 2015 against Geelong at Geelong. Ibbo was very good, with none of that indecision. He may have been confused by the new game plan (who wasn't?).

Ibbo , sutty , d.Pearce and suban will be good depth for freo in rebuilding phase . since Ross don't have a team like Gws . I think he will prepare the next phase of footsoldiers ( maybe with more skill and better decision maker).

1) ibbo -great interceptor let down my decision making ( competing with Hughes , logue for best 22 and possible line up more with ueber, cox taylin and collins for peel )
2) sutty - better than average all round player but competing with the like of sheriden,Langdon, Weller and b.hill who all capable of switching position .
3) d.Pearce - with b.hill in and croz playing in defence , s.hill ( capable of switching to defence or inside mid) will spend more time playing his position . Age is slowing catching up,will be great addition for peel if he can't get into freo line up
4)suban - got the required skill to succeed in afl but need to get the ball more and know when to release the ball out of his hand rather than rugby style and get caught .younger version with more versatility ,deluca and grey
Both play tagger with peel the next step is upgrade their skill or take advantage what they are good at.

I've thought about this a lot guys and I think that our game plan should be centered around us scoring more than our opponents. I think this will help us win a lot of games. [emoji41][emoji41]
