Surely contract length still gets brought into it?
Length of contract absolutely comes into it. 4 years at $500K would definitely be band 3, no way Levi will be a Carlton player next year if those contract details are true. Last year Richmond threatened to force hawthorn to trade for Vickery if they didn't get band 3, so hawks extended contract from 2 to 3 years and paid a little less each year to get it across the line. They look at total contract value.

Heard from a mate today that one of the reasons behind Touhy leaving Carlton at the end of last season was due to the length of contract being offered. Are Carlton only offering players 2 year deals or was this a once off?

Don't care. Like Marchbank better.

I'd argue it was the money more than the years. Regardless of how many years we offered Tuohy he'd have known he would consistently have been retained had he not wanted to leave. However SOS and co have tried to implement a system of paying players as a team rather than as individuals if you understand my meaning. I imagine Tuohy thought he was worth more than was being offered (and I would agree with him) and so decided to go to a club which would offer him that money.

We're clearly doing things very differently now than what we have previously, when it comes to list management. We've got a clear direction we're heading in & we've lost certain players as a result, including Tuohy.

SOS didn't like what he saw when he returned to the club and he's doing what he deems necessary to get things right...and being a little ruthless along the way.

The contract Zach signed at Geelong would have been superior to what we offered - so it wouldn't surprise in the slightest if what you've heard is true.

FWIW I wouldn't have thought a 2 year deal is totally unreasonable if that's what was offered. If the Cats offered him a longer contract...good luck to him.

Thanks for the insight guys, best of luck for the future but not too near future :)

It is possible. We already have the game to take it up to most sides. Look at the amazing, skilled, tough way we went about it, in the first quarter v gold coast. They had no answers and we should have been up by 6-7 goals.
Then our intensity dropped off and they slowly got back into it.
If we put in a 4 quarter effort like Q1 we can roll anyone.
Or at least score when we are dominating.

still can't see it, nubster.......we aspire to be playing at our best to win a flag one day - would that be playing better than we are?

I took the view that given our existing cattle and their collective experience to date, whether or not it was possible to play better than we have to date which I have asserted that it is. I gave the example of the 1st q against GCS as what I think we are capable of - we just need to do it for 4Q's. If we play like that for 4Q's we will be playing better than we did against GCS.
Now if you are going to bolt Lynch, Hopper and Kelly into that team, then sure it is also possible to play even better. But my point still stands- we have plenty of improvement available in this current group

Surely 4 yrs at $500000 would get a band 2 at least. Would be a similar deal to what frawley would have received at hawks

Was thinking about how a Gibbs and Kelly trade situation might pan out. This wouldn't work as is (I think) so what should change to make it workable?

Baring in mind GWS won't have a first round pick this year, next year's draft is anecdotally "super" and we want Kelly from them, I think we might end up being happy to take Gibbs for Adelaide's 2017 first (~16) and 2018 first (~18), then send GWS our current first (~6) and Adelaide's 2018 first for Kelly.

So it ends up:
Adelaide receive Bryce Gibbs
Adelaide loses 2017 pick ~16 & 2018 pick ~18

Carlton receive Josh Kelly, Adelaide's 2017 pick ~16
Carlton lose Bryce Gibbs, pick ~6

GWS receive Adelaide's 2018 pick ~18, Carlton's 2017 pick ~6
GWS lose Josh Kelly

Interesting if true as Levi deal by Richmond would cancel out FA compo for Martin.

Casboult or a mid 1st round pick? - wondering if we might convince Richmond to trade rather than pursue FA

Casboult +3rd round ->mid 1st round from Martin compo? - would be better for tigers than Martin -> casboult alone

I would highly doubt Dusty is going anywhere ....
