We're done and now know where we are.
Who knows what will come about through the trade/draft periods but at this stage, there are a few things I'd love to happen;

1. We get Kelly
2. We keep this years first, if the recruiters 1st. player would be there for us.
3. We don't lose any of our young guys, under almost any circumstances.
4. We cover our arses with acquiring some midfield depth.
5. We make the hard decisions if they're there to be made.

Nothing to back this up but ;
1. I feel Gibbs will want to stay.
2. Casboult will get the 'too good to refuse' offer, elsewhere.

Kelly and Hopper would make for terrific midfield cover, but how to get them?
Next years first, Casboult 3rd band compo, Marc Murphy and maybe some salary dump, could make for a win/win and we take Rayner with our first this year.

Next year we start with a team that may resemble something like this;

Byrne Jones Plowman
Docherty Marchbank Williamson

Kreuzer Cripps Kelly
Gibbs Hopper Fisher

CCurnow Weitering SPS
JSilvagni McKay Pickett

ECurnow Rayner Cuningham Macreadie Simpson Polso.............Then: Kerridge, Thomas, ASilvagni,

I could live with that, allowing that FA becomes priority the following year.

I know you want to trade the skipper Harks, but is there really any point including him in trade scenarios when he simply won't be traded?

Better off working with the more plausible scenario that Gibbs and Carlton and Adelaide are working on something.

If we are to get both Hopper and Kelly, I can't see us retaining our pick 3 this year. You can't have it all, just doesn't work that way.

I don't want to see Murphy go for the fun of it.
If Murphy does let go/is forced to relinquish captaincy he's just another player. Even without doing so, he's just a player.

Richmond let go of Deledio last year and they're not quite shedding tears now.....and they still hold that first rounder in hand.

We have to get over the 'he's a skipper' or 'he was our skipper' tone.
SOS is charged to trade to advantage and for all the reasons I put forward previously, nothing has changed. We need currency. He's currency.

I like it.

Man that's a really, really high cost for Kelly - pick 3 and probably another pick between 3-6. I get the second rounder comes back but damn.

If they want two picks in that range they're giving us Kelly and Hopper. Probably goes to unders in our favour but pick 3 AND 3-6 is heavily weighted towards them for a player that's out of contract.

For all we know, our first round pick next year gets us a better midfielder/KPP than Kelly.
I'd be happy with this and next years firsts and swap of our seconds next year for Kelly and Hopper.
They probably shouldn't have to give up their future second but it'll be around 35 so it's not much of a loss for them and we have to have a second rounder next year for the trade to work

Yes, something has changed: he's having a kid, and will not be relocating to western Sydney.

Can't see Murphy wanting to go anywhere let alone uproot himself and his family at this stage of his career to move interstate. We can't make him go, he will play out his career as a Blue.

If it's just about currency, Gibbs is firmly on the table too.

If Gibbs says "I'm happy here" the conversation stops. He has 2 years left.

Murphy's contract is up next year.
If we move on with our leadership group and tell him that we're going to wait until next year for any contract talks, what should he do?

Carlton send Gibbs to Adelaide (nominated) for their 1st round (#17), 3rd round (#53) & Harrison Wigg.
Casboult exercises free agency and nets us 2nd round compensation (#21)
Carlton send 3rd round pick (#56) to Fremantle for Harley Balic.
Carlton send pick #17 (acquired by Adelaide) & 2018 1st round pick to GWS for Josh Kelly

Trade period wrap:
In: J.Kelly, H.Wigg, H.Balic, #53
Out: B.Gibbs, L.Casboult, #56, 2018 1st round pick

We go to draft with:
#3 -
#21 -
#38 -
#53 -
#74 -
Then hope like hell we make the top 8.....

Sam Walsh is already performing better than some of this years draft prospects.

Wish list :
Kelly , Hopper , Rayner

Commodities :
2017 pick 3
2018 1st rounder
2018 2nd rounder
Possible 2017 1st rounder gained from Gibbs to Adelaide trade
Possible FA compo pick gained via Casboult
Murphy trade to GWS

How to make it happen ?
2017 pick 3 should land Rayner if he makes it very clear to Brisbane and Gold Coast that he definitely see's his future in Melbourne .
Trading Murphy as part of a deal with GWS for Kelly and Hopper would be my preference but can't see it so will rule it out .
Obviously then our 2018 1st rounder is on the table and possibly say pick 10 (Melb/ Lever) gained from Adelaide in exchange for Gibbs .
Reckon GWS will demand a bit more so either our 2018 2nd rounder or possible Casboult FA pick will have to be added .
2018 would then see us attack targeted FA's and add father/son's Silvagni and Hickmott .

I reckon sos is a magician and will pull a miracle out of his arse for a 3rd straight year. So this is what I reckon.

Our 2017 first + our 2018 first for Kelly plus gws's 2017 and 2018 first. This will most likely allow us to remain in contention for some quality players in the first round or to match an offer for sosos2 in 2018. Late pick in 2017 to get Worpel and the 2018 pick to get Walsh.

The depth we will also add include both hickmott brothers, Ethan Penrith and Harley balic.

.

aren't you not allowed to do this though?

ie Brett Chalmers

You have to be smart enough to know when to go and to separate and Weitering can do this.
If he's not fast enough forward, he won't be fast enough down back either.

All depends how we play the game and I see us playing a faster game next year, onwards. Smarts can equal speed.
I don't know why and I'm not even sure it the right comment, but I feel like weitering is not aggressive enough to play KPF

Not unfair to say that on exposed form.
I've had a shot at Weitering because I see that he hasn't got the most out of himself......yet.
I think that may have come about for not being as ready as one may have been for the knocks that invariably come about.
Weitering is though an intelligent and practical individual. He'll 're-set' and get things right for next season........He's much too good not to.
