I know exactly what you're saying but it also comes from Nakia's best mate who incidentally moved down from Darwin at the same time. (He's a plumber and iirc his name was either Kurt or Kirk) says he absolutely loves Geelong and won't leave.

Also said Nakia was good at almost every sport but he can't swim. Could easily drown in a bathtub.

Indicated that he could have easily been a professional boxer and can fight like a thrashing machine.

I'm inclined to back the horses mouth and his closet ally at this stage.

Nakia's dad was an absolute gun player in the Darwin comp (NTFL). Also i think he played for Port Adelaide in the SANFL. As a kid growing up Jason Cockatoo was one of my fave players. And Nakia probably can't swim because in Darwin you swim in the ocean you have to take on the crocs and box jelly fish :)

Unrestricted Free Agents at the end of this year who may be worth a look at for a 1 year player/coach, 2 year assistant coach offer.

Robert Murphy, Matthew Boyd, Dale Morris, Jarrad McVeigh, Nick Riewoldt, Leigh Montagna, Luke Hodge, Tom Lonergan, Andrew Mackie, David Mundy, Kade Simpson, Scott Thompson.

Yep, Hodge is the one who would be on top of the list for me, followed by Simpson, Morris then Riewoldt.

He'd be a good get even for a year or two for what he can offer off the field. At a guess he'll just retire and focus more on his media career for a few years before coaching which would rule us out. He'll undoubtedly want to coach at some point, I just think it will be down the line and a cushy media role for a few years would be hard to resist.

Thompson and McVeigh are completely cooked, hard to see them contributing much on the paddock. Almost certain retirements. Any of Hodge, Mundy or Simpson would be super pickups though, and there's others there who'd certainly be useful if they could be enticed up.

Any chance we can pay someone who can play to come to Brisbane?
Only if we offer around the 1million+ per season mark and I'm not kidding. No way a quality player joins us unless we pay massive overs. I mean we could probably lure a Zaharakis or Pittard type if we offered them around 700k a year but 1. They aren't the kind of guys you want to pay massive overs for and 2. I doubt they'd perform any better than someone like Bastinac in our side. We are a very difficult side to play well in.

We need to add more then 1 quality experienced player for next year. We should be willing to offer overs contracts to land them to. Make the contracts front loaded so as our young players need bigger contracts we still have the room for them. The thing we need to sell to the group we target to come is that if they all commit then we would be instantly competitive next season. 4-5 quality experienced players added to our best 22 is a fair chunk of the team and about what we are missing. My personal 5 I would target outside of the obvious 2 free agents are Parish, Z.Jones, Greene, Hopper and Kennedy. Would cost a big packet both salary and trade wise but bringing in players of that class that are choosing to come is better then draft picks.

You talk about recruiting quality, experienced players and then list Parish, Hopper and Kennedy(I assume you are referring to Matt Kennedy?). They are all second year players and all three are aged 19/20. They are all young and talented like Mathieson, Keays, Berry and McCluggage, however, they are far from quality, experienced players mate.

The type of players e should be targeting through trade/FA are inside ball winners. These types seem to play well in great and rubbish teams because they can win their own ball without relying on others. Once we have a 'foundation' of ball winners then we should start to add the class. Montagna + Boyd would be my preferred out of available FAs... I have a feeling the AFL will more or less force us to attack the FA market anyways.

How are they going to do that? Force players to come here against their will.

Nah - I don't think so. They'd have to realise that we still exist first.

Besides, as I understand it, we try out hand in the FA market every year. Doesn't make much difference in the end. This year, gotta be careful of any Rocky compo too.

If we don't seriously try to take some FAs they won't give us cash handouts. They want us competitive ASAP and bringing in any kind of FA will help with that. Out of all the FAs available you'd think at least 1 would move for more $ right?

We were cautious with the Leuey compo as well, that cost us that Hawthorn player, forgotten his name but went to Bu.lldogs

Can't think of too many free agents who have moved to a team that's really struggling.

The only ones we could get would be players in the twilight of their career & move them into a coaching role. But I wonder is it worth it, if their hearts not in it could easily backfire & look like a dumb idea.

I'd rather stick to the kids & draft for another year

And that there is the problem. The AFL tried to sell the FA system as an equalisation method, which is ridiculous, because if you look at the NBA, it's anything but equalising. The rich get richer and the poor get the picture.

The good players go hunting for premierships and brownlows.
The marginal players who can't make it in a good team come to the cellar dwellars, where they can try to extend their careers.

Sam Gibson from North could be an option as an older experienced player. Averaging 21 disposals and 3 tackles a game this year. I wouldn't be surprised if North decide to move him on as part of their youth movement. He's a better, more consistent player than the likes of Bell, Bewick and Harwood if we are looking for some cheap, mature aged depth for next year. From all reports he drives high standards on the training track as well. The kind of player I think we should look at if we pick up 5-6 draftees.

One experienced player I'd love to add is Bernie Vince. I think he's been one of Melbourne's better players during their rebuild under Paul Roos and he'd be a terrific addition off field.

By next year all 3 will be 20/21 had 4 preseasons under thier belt. They would have the afl level tanks to run out games that we lack now. They would add to the midfield rotation mix we are lacking in at the moment. Also helping us to run out games by spreading the load across more players. The other 2 in Jones and Greene are much more experienced and fill massive needs at either end of the ground at present. I agree that our players you mentioned are some of the cream of the crop of our list to. However they aren't going to be as experienced by start of next year as the 5 targets I picked. The other thing is that I wasn't suggesting my target players were 100+ games more experienced then our young talent. I was suggesting they were 30-100 games more experienced then the draftees we would get if we held onto the picks it would otherwise take to get them.

By next year all 3 will have 3 pre seasons under their belt, not 4 and you do realise that Parish, Hopper and Kennedy are from the same draft as Keays and Mathieson and only 1 year ahead of Berry and McCluggage? They aren't 30-100 games more experienced... Anyway I like them as potential trade targets don't get me wrong. Take them for what they are though, young talents they aren't quality, experienced players, not yet anyway.
