2017 trade hypothetical thread

I believe that guys talking about your decision to draft Tom Doedee instead of Ryan Burton.

In hindsight not the best decision, however the doctors that did Burton's operation certainly didnt come out with positive expectations.
After taking Lever the year before, I dont think the club thought the risk was worth it.
People from his junior club actually said he will probably never play AFL.

They were all wrong, but it wasnt a 'bad pick' as such.

Also Doedee led the SANFL in intercept marks. He will be a good AFL player in a year or two.

More than handy for the price you paid

This is not really relevant.

What is relevant is in which top 4 midfield would Dumont get a game?

My conclusion is none.

Doedee looks like he comes into the Jake Lever void to be fair - I was just making sure you knew what the comment meant. I was very glad for you guys to pass on Burton!

Gallucci and Doedee will be good players.
Both had very good seasons in the reserves and will be ready for AFL soon enough.

Burton was a huge risk. Hawthorn took it and are reaping the rewards.
Yeah fair enough...
The point I'm trying to make is sometimes the SA boys might not be quite as good but you'll never have the go home factor.
Alot of the time these guys play you for extra money, going with SA boys you'd end up with a fair war chest to chase down the highly rated SA guys.

Essendon trade 11 & 28 to Richmond for 15 & 17

15 to Bulldogs for Stringer, 17 to GWS for Smith

Giants: 15 + 28 / Smith + 23
Bombers: Smith + 17 / 11 + 28
Tigers: 11 + 23 / 15 + 17

Pick 11 too much and Pick 28 too little for Stringer. Essendon can trade 17. This seems more of a win/win for all clubs involved.

Burton was a spec pick that paid off. For every Burton, there is a Hartung.

Adelaide can't be held at fault for this.

Hartung wasn't a speculative pick, he was very good as an under age player.

The point was more that Adelaide went for a relatively unknown, raw player from Geelong instead of homegrown talent whose father had links to the club.

Its a fair point and something that has been thrown around for years.
Would anyone be saying that if we'd won the flag this year though? We were one awful game away from being premiers.

You would be.
a guy I work with son played with Burton in juniors and he told me that doctors said he would be unlikely to ever play professionally.

Obviously a solid citizen who did everything right in his rehab and has had a bit of luck with strength returning to the leg.

Lets hope he gets homesick hey ;-)

With a totally bung leg. You are just running out your generic Hawthorn fan boy stuff again.

Burton currently plays in a much easier position for starters, and Milera was a good contributor in the best side of the 2017 season.

The Milera v Burton comparison hasn't even got going yet, so arriving at conclusions at this point is just plain stupid.

To be honest i'm not saying it because you lost the flag it's because you've lost Lever and now probally Cameron

Lever had done an ACL...

Doedee hasn't played a senior game yet and Burton has played a great season in the position Doedee was drafted for. Milera was from the SANFL and a good pick IMO.

Yeah they probably would have taken him had it been a bit later, I understand the Hawks were probably in a better position to take him. It's all about how it looks retrospectively I guess.

Surgeons never seem to be too optimistic about big injuries, maybe they don't like making promises to young guys they might not be able to keep.

Oh I see, they were right to overlook Burton at 11 but not at 17.

Again, the jury is so far out that a trial date has not even been set.

Come back in 4 years.

Not sure why you're having a go, it was in reference to Adelaide drafting kids that get homesick. I didn't even make the initial point I was just correcting DangerSloane as he mistook a comment about Burton as one about Lever.

Regardless; Doedee was a completely left field pick and probably didn't make too much sense considering Burton was there and highly rated, dud leg or otherwise. Potentially it would have been better for Adelaide to draft two highly rated kids that were home grown instead of drafting Doedee.

You say that but Milera is looking like he might be a bust.
Has talent but has A LONG way to go before hes a solid AFL player.

That could be the case re: surgeons but also Matthew Liptak (a doctor and ex crows player) had inside knowledge of the operation and pretty much advised Adelaide not to take him from what I've heard.

Cant get the best kid every time. I mean fingers crossed it doesnt happen but if he breaks his leg again it may be the case that he cant play again.

Agree with the sentiment Snake, but this guys been pretty good about making a point without being a knob.
The jury is most certainly out, although Doedee has a lot of ground to make up already.

I have no doubt Doedee will be a solid player, Adelaide are one of the best clubs at developing kids. Gotta be something in the way the club manages the player and player payments that makes them leave.

You've answered your own question.
Cant afford to pay guys like Lever 850k

Imagine we'd forked out for Tippett, Davis and Lever, there would be no money left.
We wouldnt be able to sign more important players like Betts, Laird, Crouch x 2 etc.

I notice nobody mentions us 'dropping the ball with Tippett' because he's now the most expensive NEAFL player in history.

The best posters can have balanced conversations about all footy matters and don't just pop out running the fan boy line in conversations that always seem to show their own club/players in a shining light.

Balance is required.

rogie is not the worst by any measure, I do read his/her posts, but I have only seen this poster pop up with a pro Hawthorn stance, never anything else. Unfortunately, it's a bad trait for which Hawthorn fans are well known, so I may have given this poster more caution than they deserve.

The problem for the Crows is that they have chosen to follow the Geelong method of payments.

This works well, but only if you already have the premiership list in place.

That would be a great deal for us. I think Essendon, GWS and Gold Coast would be happy with that.

Can't see Bulldogs accepting that though. Perhaps a third rounder on top of that to the Dogs?
