Don't total disagree with this apart from McStay being a third tall. Third talls need to make the most of their chances in front goals and I don't think McStay's goal kicking is good enough. King's knees do worry me a bit. A lot to play out with this trade and draft period for us.

Agree. It's amazing how often he misses set shots from directly in front.

Highly doubtful. Certainly would rate talls luk and the King's but I doubt we're activity seeking other talls.

Sounds like BS particularly when you take into account that Fagan, Noble and Swan have all said our needs are midfielders and running defenders.

The Lions could look to target a key forward in this year’s draft. Next to Eric Hipwood, they currently have Oscar McInerney and Dan McStay. McStay was a consistent one to two goalkicker per game during the season. But if they want a genuine A-grade star, this is the year to bring in a tall forward. The Lions are in a position where they can look tall, having drafted midfielders such as Jarrod Berry, Zac Bailey and Hugh McCluggage in recent seasons. Jack Lukosiuswould be a prime candidate, but he is likely to be off the board come the Lions’ first pick, hence why Vic Metro forward Max King would be their best option. The athletic tall is out for the season after rupturing his ACL, but has well and truly shown enough in the games he has played to suggest he will be a future star. If the Lions want versatility, they could look towards Max’s twin brother Ben King, who has the ability to play back and forward. They will likely match a second-round bid on Connor McFadyen, while Tom Matthews and Keidean Coleman could be rookie selections.

Agree. These journalist's have lots of media to fill and any and all theories are written up and taken as gospel.

While I'm a big proponent of taking a midfielder in the draft, I'm not sure it is as clear cut as some are expecting it to be. I think King and Lukosius will almost certainly be under heavy consideration, particularly if the top end of the draft is midfield heavy. At some point, that old adage that you draft for talent and trade for need has to play out.

Except that trading for need is somewhat more difficult for a QLD team.

And if you read the tea leaves we are definitely looking to entice a mature mid or two. I for one wouldn't be against taking Max King, not Ben who is less talented, but if we went for a mid with our first pick we could do worse than Hudson Garoni with a later pick - 195cm, 93kg bull of a contested marking forward from the Murray Bushrangers.

Tom Berry for me with our 2nd would be fantastic, we have been known to select players who have hardly played in their draft year eg. Alex Witherden.

Although it will be a tough choice if one of Xavier Duursma, Jye Caldwell, Liam Stoker, Curtis Taylor are available as well, I'd expect them to be gone before the early/mid 20s selections though.

Skinner was another taken in his draft year without much footy he had blown his knee for the first time.

The top end of this years draft is not midfield heavy. From the often mentioned Super Seven (not my term) Sam Walsh and Bailey Smith are the only pure mids, then add Izak Rankine as a mid/forward. After the top 7 prospects, there's basically a group of about 15 mids, one small forward, one KPF/Ruck and one small defender.


Decided to have a look around the clubs, and Carlton and Gold Coast would be closest, though for both teams, a couple of their young mids are just over 21. Only looked at first round draftees, and not passing comment on the quality of their kids.

I dont understand the interest in talls in this draft. We have 12 already plus 3 rucks. We have added 4 young talls over the last year alone. Add some more and we have a situation where our NEAFL team has four or five talls at either end trying to outmark and spoil each other. It just isnt balanced and players cant develop.

It's been a while, but you could have a look at what we said with Dawson if you want an example of that. We said something along the lines of "we don't rate him as a second rounder", though ultimately we matched a bid in the second.

We do have quite a few of talls on our list yet looking at our spine we are not set in that area. At the start of forming a side I don't mind have a few more talls than normal as they are harder to judge if they are going to add value to the team or not. Harder to jag a good tall than a good midfielder unfortunately. Are talls overrated? The goods one no, but if you can't get a good one you need to re-look at the structure of your team.

Well said definitely need a natural forward to help out hipwood

True but you can't just keep adding them by the truckload and hoping the 3 kicks that come their way during a game gives them an oppurtunity to impress/ develop. A key forward needs room to develop his craft. He wants to be the focus of the attack, not waiting in line behind the other 3 tall forwards and a resting ruck. Same for defenders. Sure it might be good to play on a small occasionally, or as a rebounding defender but surely you want Skinner and Payne lining up on the Hammelmans, Paines, Ewings, Wrights and Keefes rather than being pushed up to the wing or half back to make room for Walker, Frost and Eagles.

Well the journalist (Balmer), in discussion on twitter, replied that would having 2 or 3 young C grade talls developing on our list stop the recruiters drafting a potential A grade tall.


Neither Ballenden, Wooler or Payne were highly regarded with recruiters at last years draft, that's why we were able to pick them up where we did. And Fullerton is still an unknown quantity.


Now in discussion, Balmer did say that trading our first pick for two later first round picks might be a better option if we prefer not to draft a KPP with our first pick.

There's a saying that I've heard (amongst NFL fans in particular) that when you have a lot, you really have little. Quantity but not quality. If most of our developing talls are really separating themselves from the pack or flashing their potential, sometimes we're better off cutting bait if a better opportunity presents itself.

If a King is the best player available, I'd rather take them and delist a developing tall with less talent. I don't think Frost or Eagles are ever going to be one of the league's premier KPPs. The Kings might.

Hence my comment about re-looking at your structure if you can't get what you want. To be honest I am not sure exactly what or how Fagan wants the forward structure to look like and function. I am however comfortable in drafting Max if he thinks we are not at that tipping point with talls. Next year not so much - time to move on. I can see that you are at that point now which is cool too.

Would agree. Games are won in the mid field and think with McStay/Hipwood and with Ballenden,Fullerton,Wooller et al developing in the twos we are okay for KPP. Not to mention more in the academy pipeline. Quality mid fielders should be the priority at the top end of the draft.
