Worth remembering the rule changes next year make having a spare rookie spot worthwhile.

Can sign a rookie from 1 December to 15 March. And also there’ll be a mid season rookie draft. Only if you have a spare spot.

I sincerely doubt they are under any form of cap constraints anymore. They certainly did overpay some young players much like we did a few years back, but they also had guys like Lynch and May taking up a big chunk of money.

There is no chance cap space is the reason they let Lyons go.
Tend to agree. The idea that they were under cap pressure was floating by a journalist early in the trade period, and then it was just reporters reporting on the reports.

They had an offer to Lynch that was apparently higher than Richmond's. Even if they were under pressure before that, there's no way they were afterwards.

Not a bad idea to hold one vacant. Should there be a season ending injury during preseason or early in the season there are a cpl of opportunities to get a like for like replacement or a player for whatever strategic reason as the season unfolds. The rule changes this year may have some unexpected consequences. I guess the pool to draft from would largely be the undrafted kids, the recently delisted, and the better of the state league players. Could be quite a pool, with some very handy gap fillers available.

Honeychurch, sam rowe, jake barrett, quite a few recently delisted players that could come into a club and play a role for a season or half a season. Even luenberger might be lured back for a doz games if someones ruck stocks go belly up.

I got the same sense of distraction when watching Goldfinger starring Pussy Galore.
I loved Felicity Shagwell!:)
Not Bond I know, but!!!!!!

For 18 do you prefer best mid available or McLennan? Probably best to bring in our next young defender while Hodge is still in the backline to lead him. If we pick a midfielder first and McFadyen isn't bid on before 30, I hope we take a look at Damon Greaves from East Perth, who had a great season as an attacking half back, can also play outside mid and gets plenty of the ball.

Ivana Humpalot > all

grabbing neale and Lyons who are both clearly best 22, has probably relaxed the midfield focus for this draft that some thought we might had. I'm hoping we target Bailey Williams at 18 if available. raw prospect but he has a very high ceiling imo. a more contested stef Martin who can play some forward minutes. I see him as a ruck

iirc there were some who mentioned an intense interest in burning down some valuable Lions' property if we ever drafted a ruck with our first pick again ...

I dont think we need to focus on the midfield in the draft. I think we need pace at both ends of the ground so i think we should get a sm fwd and a sm/med defender with our first two picks.
Pick 18, id put a bid in for jarryd cameron. Eagles have only 2 picks, pick 20 and a late one. They may not match if their priorities are for a mid or ruck eg. If they do match, then the next best sm fwd or sm/med defender. If they dont, we have a charlie cameron clone and have filled a need.
Pick 2 could be needed to match a bid for mcfadyen if some other club is feeling cheeky. No bother if we do, was always going to be this pick or the next we take him. If we dont have to match, unless theres a feeling tom berry may slide to the rookie draft, id have a look at him now. I got a feeling fagans weekend with the berry boys at their fundraiser may have seen tom impress his character and determination upon the coach. Ive always read tom has pace and agility and could play a halfback/midfield role. If we think tom will slide far then its next best half back.
Pick 3 i guess is same seario as pick 2. Mcfadyen or berry or next best half back.
So we wnd up with -- jarryd cameron or best avail sm fwd
-- tom berry or best avail sm/med def
-- connor mcfadyen, big bodied mid.
Got a feeling tho that we may still manipulate 4 live picks in the draft to make sure we get tom without the gamble.
That leaves 1 or 2 picks in the rookie draft. If 2 cos we didnt get that 4th live pick its tom berry now if he slid or if we have him already we take young coleman and keep a pick spare for an emergency in the pre or mid season rookie draft. If we only have 1 pick cos we did wrangle 4 live picks in the draft, the option is coleman or save a pick for emergency.
Id be very happy if we ended up with, cameron, mcfadyen, best avail halfback, berry and coleman to round our list for 2019. Im probably dreaming but hey, i can and its possible.

Nice as having him would be, I think 18 is far too early for him. There will be better prospects available then, I seriously doubt Noble goes with Cameron there.

West Coast have picks 20, 22, 61 and 72 as picks worth points.

Berry jr is a very average halfback. What he is, is a contested mid who can go forward and kick goals.

eh, think thats a "don't waste top 10 picks on a ruckman."

There aren't many small/mid defenders with genuine pace rated in the top 35/40. Certainly not around our first pick.

Jez McLennan is a genuine smaller defender who shows good leadership, but is more suited to kicking the ball out of defence. Looks to be a natural replacement for Hodge.

Otherwise we're likely looking at which ever of the second tier mids slide to our first pick, or one of the small/general forwards.

Of those likely to be available around our first pick are; Xavier O'Halloran, Western Jets and Vic Metro captain, who is an inside outside mid, with good pace. Curtis Taylor who looks more likely to be a mid sized forward at AFL than a mid. Sam Sturt, a fast medium sized forward who plays a somewhat similar game to Jaidyn Stephenson. Zak Butters, who is a fast and skilful wing/HFF, who has missed a lot of the season due to shoulder surgery. And Ned McHenry who is a smaller contested mid, with very good endurance who is forced to play small forward due to his size.
