If things play out the way I think they are going to, we could realistically end up with 3 top 5 picks this year. We get a start of first round priority pick, our own pick and a compensation pick for losing Lynch. That would allow us to pick up another key position player to cover the loss of Lynch and two high quality mids. Then we go out and secure more mature players from other clubs like Jake Lloyd. Things could turn around very quickly for us!

No way I can see the AFL giving us a start of first round priority pick. BF would go into meltdown and Eddie’s head would explode... although that would be very entertaining to see :)

The AFL couldn't give a toss what BF people think. Almost 50 % of the population lives in NSW and QLD they know they need 2 viable teams in both States. They couldn't care less what old clowns like Malthouse house who have never moved out of a traditional AFL State think.
The Sydney Swans Lions experiment has taught them it's all about time and patience. Both Clubs are jammed packed when they are winning as we will be in time.
Gillon McLachlan is huge GC supporter and will make sure we get at least a 1st Rounder then some for Lynch

Whatever we get won't be enough.

If we end up with a player as good as Lynch with the draft picks we get, we would be happy.

But if Tom leaves and we take the compo pick (pick 4 atm), would expect an end of first round compo pick as well (pick 19 atm).

Do you mean for Lynch get two FA compensation picks?.. FA comp is structured to only give one pick.

I might be wrong here, but I think some of our blokes are talking Compo pick for Lynch going and priority Pick at end of round 1.

I'm not too sure how it all works tbh.

He mean GC might ge priority pick like Brisbane due to Lynch departure and Team Result .
* If Brisbane get compensate with priority pick 21 in 2016 why not GC .
They get Alex witherden that year .

You're right, clubs are built on success. QLD and NSW fans are notoriously known for not showing up when their team isn't playing well but the lions continually get 10,000+ despite being near the bottom of the ladder for the past 5 years. Once we build our brand, have some on field success, build a team of players that are committed to the club and attract some A grade talent or elite stars the numbers in the crowd will come. To be honest our crowd numbers aren't that bad at all for a state that supposedly only cares about the NRL and rugby. Also the AFL has invested far too much in us to let us be a flop. Don't know about Gill being a massive fan of us but he seems to want to stabilise us more than demetriou did.

There are a lot of Sydney NRL Clubs that would love to have our crowd numbers and we well and truly have every Australian Rugby Union Franchise covered for crowds. (Not to mention GWS and AFL Games in Hobart/Launceston)

Once upon a time a few years ago.. there was an obvious and transparent formula.. that would deliver a Priority Pick but that wen as it was the feeling that clubs had too much incentive to tank.. Now its in the domain of the afl to allocate them at their discretion.

Was only joking of course about BF. Don't underestimate the Victorian Mafia. They're happy to have us in the competition so long as we don't become too powerful. Still can't see the AFL being proactive this year in handing out priority picks. Carlton need one just as much if not more than us. Next year we might receive an end of first round pick if things don't improve.
IMO a retention allowance would be better for us, similar to what the Bears / Lions used to have, make it available to all based on the number of interstate recruits on club lists.

The fact of the matter is that the AFL gave GWS the equivalent of 3 Top 5 draft picks more than the Suns. That has to have some bearing on equalisation. There is also another factor that people here aren't allowing for and that's the prospect of the Suns winning a few games. If Carlton tanks against the Lions then they won't exactly firing on all cylinders when they come to Metricon. The Walsh-Lukosius Cup has been called and it's this weekend.

Odds on this will happen - that's what the Lions got 2 years ago and they've won a 3-peat and we haven'y got near finals and starting near the bottom

The only team we could beat is Carlton, every other team will beat the brakes off us if they are fair dinkum.

You don't think with a few top 22 players back we are a chance to beat the Lions in Round 22? Rosa, Bowes, Fiorini, Hanley, MacPherson, Kolodjashnij and Lonergan are pretty big ins for a game like that.

Likely top-five draft pick Sam Walsh has pledged to stick with the club that drafts him, even if he has to move interstate.

The tough 184-centimetre midfielder from Geelong, who starred in Vic Country's winless national under-18 championships campaign, turned 18 on Monday, and begins his adult life as one of the hottest prospects in this year's draft pool, being spoken about with South Australian forward Jack Lukosius and Victorian midfielder Bailey Smith as options for the No.1 pick.

Bottom-of-the-ladder Carlton are in pole position to have the first selection, but Queensland clubs Brisbane and Gold Coast are 17th and 16th respectively and are likely again to feature very early in the draft.

Both clubs have had their issues with player retention in recent seasons, but Walsh said he'd be in there for the long haul if drafted to Queensland.

"I'd be happy to move anywhere. It's been my dream since I can remember to play AFL football, so wherever that is, I'd be grateful to get an opportunity and really embrace it at the club," Walsh told The Age on Monday.

"I hold loyalty pretty high, and I'd definitely love to repay the club if they happen to pick me up, so that's something pretty high on my agenda."

Potentially sweetening the deal for the St Joseph's College product is the fact he should fall in the range of the Lions, the club he has grown up supporting.

"My two uncles, they are twins, and they were mad Fitzroy supporters. When I was young they brainwashed me, taking me to games and I just instantly loved them," Walsh said.

Jonathan Brown was one of Walsh's favourites. Walsh spent some of his childhood in Cobden, getting to know the former Lions skipper, who hails from nearby Warrnambool.

Walsh said as a keen footy fan he was keeping an eye on the lower part of the ladder, but was aiming not to let the hype surrounding him get to his head.

"The talk will be there. I try not to listen to it too much and just keep on trying to go about my own business.

"It's all pretty out of my control so I try not to think too much about it."

He suggested Lukosius was the pick of this year's crop.

"Playing against him and with him, and seeing him train, his workrate is just second to none," Walsh said.

"He's just such a good bloke which makes it even more of a credit to him."

Walsh will head to Gold Coast on Saturday to watch younger brother Henry play for Vic Country in the national under-16 championships. As footballers the pair are markedly different, with Henry a 200-centimetre ruckman.

The national championships conclude on Wednesday with a double-header at Etihad Stadium. The Allies take on Western Australia before Vic Metro clash with South Australian in what is effectively a grand final.

You still need chemistry to gel , missing game through injuries are not ideal . That are reason you see mccluggage , Berry , Witherden play more games this year than their first year. Knowing how your teammates move and positioning are very important in AFL Games .The more they play with each other the better they gel in the long run .

Good point. Rosa, Fiorini, Bowes and Hanley will all come back to NEAFL before then though, and there are some guys hitting form in the NEAFL who will be considered this week. Day might not even make his way back unless he produces some inspired NEAFL form, but that is the challenge for all of them. I think the Lions game will now be a revised target for the team to aim for because they need to post some wins at Metricon badly.

Hutchy says on footy classified get may to commit this year if he can’t commit then trade him instead of dragging it on next year when free agency rules change

Interesting thought. Not sure how I would feel about it. Don't really want to lose Maysie as well.
