20% of his marks were contested. Nank ran at about 25% contested marks for the year.

Otherwise, he's a consistent and tough ruck that does his job really well. Against the best couple of rucks he gets panted a bit. But any depth ruck will be worse against them. Let's just let this play out. I reckon our logic is more likely to be "Nank does a great job and we have CCJ as a potential A grader coming through. So let's just try to work this and move from one to the other over the next few years." If things fall apart then, damn. But too many rucks will cause problems in itself. You cannot play that many rucks. Saying we might have injuries is always true. But then you just balance the squad as best you can.

Some have suggested Balta will be groomed for that role but he’s still very young and would be undersized in the ruck.

I think there’s some merit at looking to draft a state league ruck with a later pick, especially if they have a bit of versatility to be able go forward and we don’t have to just plonk them on the bench for the majority of the game while Nank rucks.

All makes sense. I'm just a bit unsure how that work sin reality. Playing a guy because our second ruck isn't good is robbing Peter to pay Paul. But we'll see what the club does in a little while.

A lot of talk around chol on here. I'm all for taking project players with rookie selections but he can't remain on the rookie list next year as this was his 3rd year. Has he actually improved enough to warrant a senior spot? From what I read on here the majority seem to think not.

Yes mabs definitely deserves another year to develop on the senior
List next year, every year he has improved , last year he broke his foot, he was going to play last year if not for the injury, really hope we persevere with

Dont think soldo has the forward or defensive nouse to be able to rest in either of those positions for long periods. Which only leaves him as a 1st ruck option. Not sure he replicates nanks around the ground work. But is probably better in taps due to his height.

The only way we get him without using our first is if we get busy and trade up.

This is a possibility, but I think if we can lock a talented inside mid with our first we may just wait until 37 to see what slides.

If we could grab 2 quality inside mids this draft, would be great for us. This is the draft to grab them!

They basically tagged Gundy with the second ruck. Never allowed him to do his thing. Never gave him him a rest with the two prong attack. Certainly having two rucks in those instances does work - of course though Lycett and vardy are more than handy around the ground which helps.

They really went to work on Grundy. He is not a big jumper and the WC rucks jumped and stuck their knees and whatever else they had into his body and wore him down. Like boxing. Great coaching and the main reason they are premiers.

Think we are between a rock and a hard place with our 2nd ruck.
With Lynch any 2nd ruck would make us top heavy.
Only solution is a hybrid 2nd ruck like a Balta who can play another role for 85% of the time.

Not buying in that you can't have two rucks and two big forwards.Eagles won the flag with it that set up aslong as the rucks a mobile and have aglity around the ground.I don't think it will make us to top heavy if our setup is correct and midfield work hard.

I think come draft day Smith will be a top 20 pick. If we don't pick him I could definitely see the Lions taking him at 18. They need help on the inside after Beams leaving and they love the Vic Country kids nowadays.

Guys like Valente, Bytel, Fletcher, Rowbottom and Stack are more likely to be there at 37.

Smith just feels like a case of right player, right team and too good to pass up despite what the "rankings" suggest.

Looking at it now I think Stocker goes to Freo and RCD goes to one of Adelaide or GWS because those clubs have multiple picks in the first and can afford to take a chance on someone who will take time.

Not a big wrap taking players much higher in draft then were they should be drafted we have been burned by this so many times Conca,Ellis and Lennon.Best available for me first pick will be plenty of sliders.

Rioli was a reach at the time, so was Valstuin.

Conca and Ellis didn't fail because we took them early (Lennon is debatable that it was early).... they failed because they are flawed players.

Conca’s decision making is terrible, Ellis could never find the footy even at junior level and was so limited athletically, Lennon had similar issues, no desire, no speed and couldn’t find it.

I don’t see Ely having any of those issues

Our biggest need is not another ruckman. Soldo can play IF Nankervis gets hurt. Soldo is also very much a project player and seems to be tracking in the right direction.
He is just 22 still very much a baby when it comes to ruckmen.Hes also only been in footy for what 3 yrs or 4 yrs where the hell is the patience.
He isnt going to dominate games at this stage but if hes needed im sure he will compete.

CC-J Very much a baby still only a 19yo, but he has plenty of size already 200cm and must be close to 100kg. He is good in the air a very good mark is not slow
He may be a bit raw to play first ruck but with another pre season behind i can not see any reason why we can not play him as the third tall who goes into the ruck when the opposition second ruck goes in there.
I can see no reason why we cannot do this with Chol as well. Also a bit of a project ruckman non footy background very skinny when drafted was always going to take 4 or 5 yrs so again wheres the patience. Lets get some games and experience into these blokes.
Of course theres also Nankervis i dont see the need to get another ruckman not this yr anyway.If Soldo and Chol dont come on, then at the end of next yr we could make that call.

The real needs in the list are there for all to see

Big bodied inside mid. A clearance winner. Also some real quality quick outside mids who can get enough ball and run the lines for us.

Imo we need a well rounded lock down sml/med defender with pace, motor, and very good footskills to provide an alternative to Grimes in locking down an oppo small and provide plenty of run and hurt factor with delivery. We dont actually have a sml/med defender who ticks all of those boxes.
B Ellis has many issues, Houli is no 1v1 defender and is now 30 and Short is defensively deficient and panicks under pressure like the other two.

Last but not least we need a quality medium sized fwd there is only Caddy on the list and he is very much needed in the midfield next yr and Townsend who is extremely limited as a player and probably lucky to still be on the list.

Personally with our first pick 17 id like us to target one of the 7 or 8 bigger bodied mids that should be there. Some wishful thinking would be Jackson Hately but i dont think he will get to us, maybe we could improve our draft position to allow us a crack at him. Valente, Stocker, Foley, O,Halloran,E Smith, Jye Caldwell and a few others could slip to us all inside mids with size.
What would have been great is another pick between 10 and 30.

Ely is the only draftee ive seen play live only once but he looks afl ready to me ,big solid dude wide shoulders good pace no squibbing contests id be happy if hes our no 1 pick
