His videos are impressive. Great in reading the game, great decisions, great kick. Unfortunately, hip surgery wiped out his 2015 and then had foot injury in 2016. Suns had to build his body slowly. With ambition to play in midfield he could be our Bontempelli! Wish Bowes, Brodie, Ainsworth, Scrimshaw were already 3-4 years in the system. They all have potential to be guns.
I think I've learnt only recently not to get sucked into the pre draft video highlights. I hope he does well and becomes a superstar don't get me wrong, it's just the way media has evolved the last decade every draft there is always the next Judd or Ablett and it just doesn't come to pass. I think the only genuine hype and then the kid delivering on said hype in his first couple years has been Omeara over the past decade. Anyway that Ocockface aside, I'm hopeful Brodie is that gun we desperately need in the guts, and you actually see glimpses of it but I just struggle to comment on players that have barely played at the top level under the spotlight.

Sorry lads
I’ve arrived now
It’s a small affair maybe about 30 Members in attendance for people with a certain membership type

What membership type mate ?

Platinum. I’ll try and make some comments and remarks later tonight. It was as I said a low key affair there wasn’t any big wigs like Lynch or May or Evans or Dew.
But it’s been a nice welcoming affair with some good info passed on.
Anyway there’s a storm coming so I’ve gotta zip.

Ok from the Pre Season Night
It was pretty short so don’t have too much
Lots of the youngsters have bulked up in the off season
Wigg is back running
Day will play AFLX and looking great
Spencer held his own against Lynch in match simulation
Never have they had such a good pre-season for lack of interruption
The key indicators for strength and fitness are way up

Prescott as usual was incredibly enthusiastic.
Nothing amazing to share-Dew has done huge work on relationships to the point where the players now interact with admin staff and other departments
young players seem more confident,
lots of work done on defence and tackling,
No longer does there appear to be factions or cliques,
Game style will be more direct whereas under Rocket it was to switch play and go wide.

The girls and guys from the Membership Dept I think are a fantastic asset to the club.

There was a BBQ on afterwards where I briefly did some light banter with Barlow and Prescott but this epic storm started to roll in and wanted to bring my Dog in as he freaks right out so I didn’t stay as long as I would have liked.

Hope that is useful.

Lynch is too busy down in Melbourne looking at real estate apparently

There was a few players filming for fox sports and channel 7 for the promo’s

Oh it was mentioned actually at tonight’s Pre Season Members Night that Dew and a few senior players are in Melbourne at the Moment doing The Promo’s.

I'm down in Melbourne so did you mean this literally or figuratively in terms of the Suns? ;)

Thanks for the breakdown. All good info, positive as you'd expect.

I really like what you relayed about players being encourage to build relationships throughout the club - super important for Club Culture.

Seems like getting rid of Gaz, Trent and Matera might have ended the cliques, again important for culture.

Did they mention anything about having so many local players in the club, especially Academy guys?

Great stuff Mr. Bods! Good hearing these little snippets every now and then directly from the club considering the lack of access we have been given over the pre-season through social media etc. Just a couple of thoughts on this information.

I feel like we hear this every year, although the new digs seem to have really driven the group forward physically, and hopefully with Dew at the helm we have made the most of this lack of interruption for a change.

I still can't get over how unbelievably woeful both of these aspects were dealt with under Rocket! Players playing scared, lacking communication with the coach, unsure what they are doing. Surely one of the first step in getting a playing group going forward is uniting the club and having clear goals with every one on the same page and aware of their own role. It will be interesting to see how the playing group moves forward now with no members of the rat pack left and only Hall remaining from Gaz's group (not that I think that one was particularly bad, more just Ablett himself thinking he was 'too big' for the team and rubbing off onto Hall).

One more thing. I hope all this focus on tackling and defense has given the squad a bit of mongrel and/or fight. Outside of the captains and a couple of others our squad doesn't seem to have a heap of guys who are nuisances/pricks/ get under the skin of the opposition or are willing to put in that big hit. We need to become the bully, not the easy target we have been from the start who can't handle the slightest bit of intensity and roll over at the drop of a hat.

I've been reading Paul Roos' book, "Here It Is". He was big on relationships, building players' confidence & players knowing their roles as well as improving tackling, defence & accountability. I think it is great that Dew, Malceski & George Stone have all been part of Roosy's system & have seen it work. It sounds like they're trying to implement a lot of the same strategies at the Suns.

The team Roos took over at Melbourne was so bereft of confidence after years of failure, they didn't really know what they were meant to do. By contrast, the Swans had played finals, even a Grand Final in the 90's, before falling away.

The Suns' situation seems more like Melbourne's, even though we may have a bit more raw talent than they had at the time. Our coaches need to keep things simple, with rules to follow. Things like stick your tackles & play the role we've asked you to.

I really hope the Assistant coaches Dew has inherited have bought into his system. We need them to.
