Gary Ablett Snr wasn’t universally loved at the Cats either. Especially by the players when he was getting paid the big bucks and then not even turning up to training. Older Geelong fans will tell you that watching a player kick 14 goals in a losing side didn’t endear you to the weirdo. Kinda like watching the 2.0 version get 53 touches while your side gets smashed by 96 points. And did I mention they are both weirdos?

Not gonna touch the Ablett V Lyons debate, but seriously, how good a pickup has Lyons been!?

Sure he tends To just throw it on the boot at times, but he is exactly what we were crying out for when we picked him up and has become a top midfielder which no one saw coming. Kudos to Clayton and whoever else identified him as a potential target and got it done for what, a couple of picks in the 50’s?

And to think Adelaide threw him up for the Gibbs trade a few years ago and they weren't interested. I think after the weekend they regret that decision.

I know the Demons had a go at trading for Lyons too and my mate is spewing it didn't eventuate. Demons haven't got an affiliation with Sandringham anymore, but they've been watching him for 10 years.
Sandy Roberts likes him so much he named the whole team after him.

haha was giving this debate to carlton fans and they would rather O'Brien (the pick they got for Gibbs), as 'he is gonna be a better player' (even though he has not played a game). Also were saying Lyons wanted big big money and he isn't worth it. I love him

I think that last year and this year, most clubs would take Lyons at his salary over Gaz on his.
But Gaz was the best player in the game for 5.5 years (2009-2014) and would have won a 3rd Brownlow if his shoulder had stayed in.
No problems from me for his on-field play, even if it got selfish at times. Off-field captaincy? That bit was rubbish.

We all know he was a brilliant player but the last contract signing was what left a sour taste in my mouth.
Geelong had no cap space and we reward him with $1mil a year over 3, and reportedly front load it.
Then the BS my family need me trick. That family have been a train wreck since cocky was an egg. Spare me.
There’s no point being married to Ablett unless you’re recognised. Therein lays the problem...

Hey guys. Out of curiosity are you staying in Perth for the next week and a half, with the game v WCE next week? GC - Perth is just about the longest flight in the country so I’m curious as to whether you’re setting up base in Perth rather than flying return twice, and if so what your training/housing set-up will be.

Yep staying 10 days. Will spend the weekend in hotels then head to apartments at Fremantle Sunday, spend the week there. Then back to hotels in Perth itself next weekend for the west coast game.

Thanks mate. Where’s training? Do you know if any players took their families?

They will stay in holiday apartments throughout the week. Training will be done on Optus Oval itself I'm pretty sure - something that the Freo and WCE players don't even get.

A few players took their families. Aaron Hall for instance took his wife and bub.

Cheers. Would be good to see if the club does a review, I wonder if it’s a better model for interstate fixturing going forward ie Freo could play two or three games in a row in Melbourne once a season, maybe the same in Adelaide. AFLPA wouldn’t like some parts of it but benefits would include less strain on the body and more familiarity with interstate grounds (give them a few training sessions at the MCG, etc).

Both Freo and WCE get to train at Optus Oval once a week due to contract agreement.

I like the Doomsday Double concept. What if it was Freo that came to the East Coast for back to back games in 2019 and the Lions who went West for 10 days? Brisbane actually submitted a proposal to sell a home game to West Coast, but the AFL granted the Suns the fixture instead. There might even be a niche market in the West for fans who hate the snobby Eagles and wan#3rs with anchors to become Suns fans. We've got about 6 WA players. Also, think about the tourism opportunities, especially if the scheduling was in the school holidays. I imagine a fair few Gold Coasters have gone West to escape the Comm Games too.

Anyone have much insight as to why Brodie is still playing reserves? I loved his bull work as a junior and he played a great senior game last year. Seems to get near the "bests" in the ressies a bit but can't get pushed up thus far. Is he close or still a lot of work to be done on the tank? Cheers

He's an inside mid, we have them in abundance - probably not even next in line in that role (Barlow).

True that, but I also think you have to take into account where else he can play in the side and make that his position. Is he going to be an accumulator, run-with tagger, outside runner, forward flanker or key position player? Why not try him out in a few positions and promote him when he can add versatility then bring him into the squad?

Didn't they play him as a tagger last week?

Yeah, he spent most of the game on Tom Bell, who is bigger and has AFL experience at two clubs. The things to remember are that being named Emergency on a road trip often leads to being activated on game day and there are two games in the next 8 days. Hanley might not come up after the long trip or he might not recover for the Eagles game. Sexton spent some time in the rooms being treated for injury on Saturday, although he played out the game and had some great passages of play. Rory Thompson broke down in the warm-up in Shanghai while Keegan Brooksby was stuffing his face with pork dumplings (not actually true, although it would explain why he played so terribly).

Brodie has not made the trip
