I've read a few things about attitude problems and entitlement. He isn't exactly a regular in the team so it doesn't look like Bolts rates him that high. A real make or break year.

Regular in the team? He hasn't been a regular at any level due to fitness issues.

Look at the games played since entering the system -

2018 - 5 AFL, 2 VFL
2017 - 8 AFL, 7 VFL
2016 - 3 AFL, 8 VFL

As is the case with a number of others, the biggest issue here is continuity.

Don't know how you can come to the assumption Bolton doesn't rate him.

I think this issue is more confidence than anything else. The club know he has the ability. Getting fit and free from injury wouldn't hurt either

I'm pretty sure the rookie list has a set maximum wage, the same as a first year player. Phillips would be on more than that.

There's a set minimum wage, but I'm not familiar with a maximum.

That being said, it presents as such a massive loophole now that the Cat A rookie list basically means nothing, that I'd be surprised if Cat A rookie payments are even partially outside the cap any more.

There is a minimum, especially with draftees, the rest is made up of match day payments, if they are replacing a LTI and then selected in the senior squad

Has a terrific burst of pace, his pressure game is very good and he's a beautiful finisher, so there is certainly plenty to work with.

My queries at this stage are (a) his best position, (b) his productivity and (c) his body.

He's not a high production player, never has been, so not sure midfield is his go, but like what I've seen from him forward and the club seemed keen in 2018 to use his pace off half back.

Just want to see him remain fit and have a good run at it, because there is certainly talent there.

2019 is a big year for him but at 21 I don't think we should be in any rush to move him on, and looking at our contract situation I would say there are quite a number more likely to lose their place on the list before him.

He was noticeably the first dropped after some awful team performances, Norf in Hobart comes to mind. Could be something to it?

Could be that he was chucked down back as a trial and it didn't work? Heat map has him on the half back flank that game, and we got absolutely punished. North scored from every second forward 50 entry.

Still think he's a more natural forward half player. Has the physical attributes to be damaging anywhere, but I think a simple "apply pressure and kick goals" approach is the key to getting him settled.

I'm bullish on Cunners. If we persist and can get him settled and confident, I reckon he gives us what Shiel would have offered. Burst midfielder who creates goals.

If you're implying he's arrogant, you are having an absolute laugh. I know him personally and went to school with him. He is many things, but arrogant is not one of them.

Geez, a clean skin 20 year old with self-confidence issues that has been in the private school system and has grown up with 3 older sisters, finally divests himself of a culture that tends to be pretty shitty to women, only to step into a football club.

As much as I'm sure Cartlon has made strides in this area compared to the average AFL club, I wonder why he might be a bit stand-offish.

Barass, I appreciate a lot of what you have to say, but this is opinion seems hobbled together by a few blokes who got a bit riled that he didn't join the 'club within the club'.

What's the problem with Cunners?! Just because he isn't a cheeky lad like Charlie or self assured like SoSaJ or metrosexual like Boekhurt there's a problem?

People within the club and his previous coaches often say Cuningham is a quiet person almost a bit awkward. Maybe he's just an introvert or maybe he's just quiet.

Who cares. He can play and we'll get some good out of him the next two seasons and beyond !

The quote could come from the King of England for all we care. Cunningham is trained in film making. His nickname seems more aligned to his extra curricular training. The question here is can the coach and staff adapt to different personalities within the playing group. I am yet to be convinced.
