I fondly remember the 12 Days of Christmas, Day 3 - Erin Phillips to lead the Poort Pear women’s team.

Was it really?

Ouch. They used Crows premiership player and Brownlow winner Erin Phillips as their Captain?

Just, ouch.

So are we seeing the start of the end of Cheerleaders & Dancing Girls ?

If people are consistent in their arguments of inappropriate messaging .....i believe it is

Yup, they're on the way out.

EDIT: unless like at the Strikers, they also have male dancers, so there's equal-opportunity... admiration?

Just for the record, the 'girls' used as grid girls are actually models not dancing girls.

Also it will not happen in sports in the US as it is considered a serious sport there. They have teams in their colleges just as popular as basketball, and their football teams. They also offer scholarships for the elite.

If they host another Olympic games, rest assured it will be part of competition.

Dancing girls attached to Aussie sporting teams went years ago (remember the Crows dancers in the early days?). Dancing squads (ala Brisbane Heat dance crew - made up of both males and females) are the modern replacement. Cheerleading is actually a world sport, so I don’t see that going anywhere any time soon. Cheerleaders (ala American footy) will eventually go by the wayside.

I'm reading stuff on here pro or con cheerleaders/dancing girls whatever. Up top on my screen there's an ad 'FIND HOT RUSSIAN SINGLES' with a picture of a young wench--presumably Russian--lying on her stomach with her bum cocked in the air.
Funny old world.
:D You do know those ads are generated by the stuff you look for on your own computer

Mine just happens to be SilverSingles

I must be doing it wrong.

The ads I see are about investing in Adelaide's East End, Home Insurance and Domain.

Dare we say hypocritical ?

I personally don't see how promo girls are any different to cat walk/photographic (ie Vogue magazine type) models.

They do the same job. Promote a product with how they look.

Just another misconception that requires correction.

These so called grid girls are not there to promote anything (with the exception of the Etihad flight attendants in a couple of F1 races), they are there purely
to show the teams the correct line up on the race grid on race day which shows the grid number, the driver's name and nationality.
Nothing more nothing less.

If they are promoting anything, then they promoting the driver.

And you can trust me, not all is about their looks either.

Not a chance in hell of that happening. It's part of their culture.

They might have a practical purpose and I agree with most of what you said.

But they also wear apparel with sponsorship on it. And a pretty girl wearing it is more likely to catch the eye (to maximise the exposure for that sponsor) than some bloke holding a sign on a stick showing each driver where to line up on the grid.

Don't they also hold the umbrella for the driver on a wet day? A bit like James Aishe' s missus does for him......

Again where do you get they wear apparel with sponsorship on it. The only thing they would have on it would be the actual grand prix name.

Your perception might be confused with local motor sporting events, but not F1 or any other international races sanctioned by the FIA overseas and here in Melbourne. And again with the exception of the Etihad flight attendants.

I know this from 10 years of experience.

‘We’re no longer eye candy’

Seven-time grid girl Chloe Cameron, now a senior business systems analyst, told The New Daily she felt “privileged” to represent the sport.

The 32-year-old worked as a Formula One grid girl from 2006 to 2013.

“It was great working with the grid girls and making new friendships. The Grand Prix atmosphere is exciting and I enjoyed meeting and talking to the spectators from all around the world,” she said.

“Since 2007 there has been a major shift in the role of the Formula One grid girls. We are no longer seen as eye candy but are instead representing the sport, the major sponsor and Melbourne.

I also found a few other articles talking about grid girls wearing and promoting clothing from high end fashion designers and of course Rolex watches at other Grand Prix. The Australian one is pretty obvious with the "Fosters" sash.
It may be subtle, but they are there to promote a product as well as a practical reason.

So, there's a practical purpose, which can only be fulfilled by a woman.

Unless that purposes is giving birth on the grid...

I call shenanigans.

Yes and that one "Grid Girl" would only have had on her uniform that it was that particular year and which Grand Prix it was. The rest of the photos, to push their story are private sponsors "girls", heaven even Ferrari and Red Bull have them also appearing and promoting at all tracks.

Look at this story below and the first photo gives the impression that these are grid girls when if fact they are promoting a watch, where as the Grid Girls from last year were tastefully dressed in green and white.

I will say however the US Grand Prix was an eye opener.

When they ban grid girls and a female is still standing there holding the driver/constructors sign and umbrella whilst wearing a Rolex timepiece and guiding the driver where to stop in the grid, what will she be called?

I also wonder if men will be assigned the role next year.

If the role of a Grid Girl is a practical one in that they assist the driver and are not there for promotion (using their good looks and body shape to do so) that makes their removal ridiculous. As you say they are doing a practical job.

The context of my initial post was to compare them to a fashion model. These women are being demonized despite having a practical role and a fashion model is something to aspire to. It is a multi billion dollar industry. And yet the fashion model's entire job is to look good to sell a product.

Here you go, maybe this can apply to you snowflakes offended by my name

“Could it be construed as bad taste? Yes. Do you really give a ****? No.”

“If you’re that easily offended, don’t go on BigFooty. Don’t go out the house!”

Having been married to an amoeba for 20 years that is the best bit of video I have seen in a very long time. Awesome.

Grid assistant?

And I'm not claiming that "geez, when will men catch a break" but i think that any pretence these women are selected for this role without thought of their attractiveness, is spurious.

...did anyone claim that or am i going off for no reason?

Yes, the irony of a society that claims

- you're a woman, you don't have to trade off your looks, you can be anything!

and

- we need fashion models to sell stuff, hot chicks need only apply

at the same time is amusing

Think I might go live in a fun country when I retire. This one is seriously heading down the shitter. Me thinks.
