Looks reasonable VDog. I'd probably be happy with any of those first 3.If we're talking players who may realistically be there, McAsey is my number 1. Would love to get Flanders but he surely goes top 5 considering how good his form has been. I still think that Weightman would be a solid pick at our 13 even if it is a little early.
In order of preference for players that could be there at our pick:
I would also expect us to bid on Henry before any others if he's there. Absolutely perfect player for us, but I do concede that Fremantle will match the bid. Just think that if the NGA/FS player is the ideal pick, you should bid and make the club match.
- McAsey
- Gould
- Weightman
- Stephens/Sharp (probably about equal to be honest. I would probably take Sharp over Stephens given that Stephens is too similar to Hunter)
If, by some disaster, all these players are gone and nothing that great slides, I'd hope we look to trade down/out. We don't need more inside mids and half backs. At least Sharp looks to have scope to play on a wing
The draft is still a month away so I don't pay an awful lot of attention to phantoms and detailed analysis of who we might pick at this early stage. All the same it's interesting to see who people rate even if it's on the assumption that those players would still be there at our pick and that nobody else would slide.
Now we don't know who other clubs rate but it doesn't really matter that much (unless we are aiming to trade up, which I very much doubt). We're just interested in who's left at pick 13. So wouldn't it be a better approach to do a WB draft board (at least for our first round pick) as Nick Austin and Sam Power will no doubt do? That way we can see who else might suddenly scream out "PICK ME!" if he happened to slide unexpectedly. There is at least one slider from the expected top 10 in nearly every draft. I know the likes of Anderson, Rowell and Green are highly improbable but for the sake of clarity and completeness they are easy enough to slot in without having to spend much time thinking about them.
Naturally whatever you list would have to be for the purposes of a WB draftee, not a general AFL draft ranking as many of the pundits are publishing right now. The following is an example (without researching it too deeply). It includes anyone tied to another club that we might choose to bid on:
1. Matt Rowell
2. Noah Anderson
3. Tom Green
4. Sam Flanders
5. Hayden Young
6. Caleb Serong
7. Brodie Kemp
8. Fischer McAsey
9. Lachlan Ash
10. Luke Jackson
11. Will Gould
12. Dylan Stephens
13. Cody Weightman
14. Trent Bianco
15. Trent Rivers
16. Elijah Taylor
The idea of course is that we take the highest player left on the list when it comes to pick 13. I'd probably be happy to take any of those 16 players at pick 13 but if you only rate say 11 players worthy of pick 13 then you just list 11 (implying we then aim to trade #13 for a couple of this year's 2nd rounders or one this year and one for 2020).
Is there anyone in that top 13 you wouldn't take at pick 13?
